Always enjoy your videos Jon, and you should do more. I guess I’m the guy that’s 1 in 40, because that rendition of ain’t no grave was great. A friend that I was in a band with about 25 years ago would do old gospel songs like that in church, I’ll fly away, he set me free, etc. good stuff and totally understand about your soul pullin’ you. Love that Electric Prunes song too.

Hey Ben! Thanks for watching!! Always appreciated! I think I had a bad choice of words, I didn’t mean the music on these records were no big deal, I meant they were more commonly found records. Which of course has no bearing on if it’s good music or not. But when I see your Australian pressings they look exotic to me, so I totally get what you mean!! Glad you enjoyed the tunes! Have a great weekend! Cheers!!!

Well, you done done it! I need some Chickenshackers in my life. John Lee Hooker was the first blues guy I loved. It's funny, I grew up in the Delta and he was my first love with the blues. Collecting 45's or 7"'s is how you get the true underground. Holy shit! That Cooke Duet is immaculate. That's old country mixed with slave songs. Cheesy as it may sound, I'd like to hear Danzig sing that. Always a pleasure my man!

Hey, Jon. That Amos Wilburn tune was great. The Little Boy Blues tune sounded like it could’ve been more current and put out in the last 20 or 30 yrs. Excellent song. Congrats on finding one of your grails! Fantastic tune too. Powerful as hell vocals that mix together perfectly. Not cheesy or corny at all what you described. Music is truly a real deal magical thing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lost my breath with tears falling down my face when certain music hits me the right way. Thanks, Jon!

I know you get music on a deep level, but it feels corny sometimes when I try to describe the emotions I feel instead of the music itself. But we’re definitely on the same page! Thanks again! Hey Dean!! Thanks for watching!! Cool you’re picking up 45s again! There’s a lot of good deals out there. 45s are still a bit of an untapped market unless you going for the rarities. So many good forgotten hits and near misses for under $5. Beats spending $30 bucks in an album that has three good tracks! Haha! You know I was almost gonna mention in this video that Jack White would dig this track, but I had one beer too many and started rambling. Ha! Good call on that Dean!! He probably knows of the song already as he seems to be on the ball and have expert collectors in his circle. If he needs an ultra clean copy to record, he can look me up! Haha! Thanks again!! I enjoyed that one.. I always like it when the music has something desperate is haunting , graves get mentioned and "the lord" gets sung about.. Might be my catholic upbringing .. Its a bit like if Dead Moon had gone to church met the Louvin Brothers and they had written a song together .. Also love that they printed their address and phone no on the label.. all very very cool.. Nice one..

Thanks Klaatubar! Yes the lyrics/ song title help make this song for sure! If it was the exact same song but the lyrics were “Peace in the Valley” or some Hallelujah singing, it wouldn’t have the same vibe! Like you said, you can hear the hidden desperation in it. The voices seem to tell us that life was hard and short. Glad you dug the tune and understood the feeling I got from it!! Much appreciated!! Thanks!! Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon. It's good to see you back posting a video. I know what you mean about not being in the mood. I don't know how some of the bigger channels manage to post so much (mind you the quality certainly drops when they are just posting for the sake of it) ... The Amos Milburn 45 got me thinking about when the first 45 came out in the UK. I checked and the first pop 45 was by Eddie Fisher in 1952. 78's were still being pressed throughout the 50's, and the last one was one by Elvis Presley in 1960 ... "Music that comes from the earth." I like that.

I liked all of those tunes, Jon. I've got quite a few versions of Ain't No Grave, but that one by The Cooke Duet is a great one. It sounds much older than 1965. It's amazing to think with all the developments going on in popular music in the 60s, a song like that was recorded. One of my favourite pick ups from last year was a recording of Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers recorded by Alan Lomax, and while they don't sing Ain't No Grave, it would certainly fit in. I've got a video of gospel, scared harp singing and early American Folk hymns in the works. That'll bring in the subscribers 😄 Cheers - Hedley

Hey Hedley!! Thanks for watching this one! Sounds like a cool video you’re working on! I know what you mean about bringing in the subscribers! Haha! My channel is all over the place. People tune in for heavy metal, but they get reggae or they tune in for fifties music and I show punk etc etc. I do know Bessie Jones. I got at least on track I know on those Lomax CDs that came out on Rounder in the 90s. But realistically, I’m not well versed in these styles of music, just enjoy a good track or two when the mood hits. The thing about the Cooke Duet that has me so excited is having the actual 45 artifact. It makes it so much more precious than the songs on my reissue LPs or CDs. Hope you’re doing well Hedley!! Thanks again!! Cheers, Jon

That Amos Milburn 45 came out Sept '54 (according to 45world). He toured with Charles Brown, and they were paired on split singles too, most notably Please Come Home For Christmas (Brown) b/w Christmas Comes But Once A Year (a SMOKING Milburn gem!) on King in 1960. Though country, this version of Ain't No Grave soars with a soul of its own to it. Those distortions could be the mic thing, their voices' effects on the cutting itself, how cheap it was recorded, or all of the above. I bet it actually helps you get that raw feeling you're talking about.

Their vocals {Jeanette and Hubert} are very strong Jon. If I was digging for singles and I saw that one I would not have known who they were. Like thousands of other singles. But if there was a turntable in the shop and I sampled it first. I probably would have bought it. But I do agree with your assessment of the recording. The decibels in their vocals were overpowering the mic's capabilities. But darn it sounds cool anyways. The harmonizing is dynamite. Way to go J~ Rob/Boston

That Prunes really sounded like the 13 Floor! I Done Done It - now that is nice and dirty rock n' roll. Hey, your grail said it was recorded in Charlotte - I wonder if I passed where it was recorded without even knowing it.

Hey Kris! Yeah, the Prunes were pretty raw on this track. Their other stuff I heard is a bit more slick. I’m not sure if the track was recorded in Charlotte, but certainly could have been. But it was definitely pressed (furnished) by that company in Charlotte. Good chance you have driven by the old location! If you caught it, it said Arthur Smith as the company owner. That was Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith who had the massive guitar instrumental by the same name. Big influence on country boogie and RnR. Hope you’re doing well! So far a pretty mild winter here, but that can change in 24 hours up here! Thanks for watching!! Cheers!!

Cheers! Always so much fun to see your videos; dig that Amos Milburn. I was surprised by the Little Boys Blues; has a sound almost like Arthur Lee's Love.I think I understand what you mean when you hear And Ain't No Grave. I feel a similar pull when I hear, I Wish I was a Mole in the Ground (1928) from the Anthology of American Folk Music. Ain't No Grave, indeed does sound amazing. All that restlessness and urgency of craving fulfilment (and meaning) in A hard life flows through those voices. It's truly a remarkable track, Jon. I can understand why you would be inspired by it. (Are you familiar with the folk/country/rock band Freakwater? The lead vocalist Janet Bean sings with a rawness that is not dissimilar from Ain't No Grave. If you're inclined, check out their album Old Paint and the song, Waitress Song. It doesn't have the depth of meaning of Ain't No Grave but there is a strong, working-class defiance (and despair) is truly unique, tragic and beautiful. Be well. Shawn

Hey Shawn! Sorry for the late reply! You gave me homework! Dug the 1928 Mole tune! Listened to a few versions! Didn’t really like the newer country track by Freakwater, but I could recognize that it’s a good one. Just not my bag. I have an aversion to pedal steel guitar. It’s weird, cause I love the sound of lap steel. But I absolutely appreciate the recommendations!! Thanks for watching and giving these a listen!! Very cool of you! Have a great week!!! Cheers!!!!!!

Hey Chance! Appreciate you stopping by! I have lots of good shops in the Boston area, but I don’t get out shopping very much. Mainly I buy online through Discogs and other sellers. This way I’m a bit more selective with what I bring home. Quality over Quantity at this point in my life. And yes eBay is a great place for me to buy records. Thanks again!! Cheers, Jon
