Nuobells Suck, Get These Instead: Snode AD80 Adjustable Dumbbell Review

Спорт

NÜOBELL adjusts quickly and looks great but they're too fragile. Snode's AD80 dumbbells aren't perfect adjustable dumbbells either but our teardown & drop tests may change your mind on them.

    Metal gears require lubrication and maintenance. Nylon gears are silent and if designed to a good tolerance, will not wear much because they don't load up due to low friction. You would worry in this case about the durability of the axles and plastic centering features that are baked in, but they seem to be beefy enough and designed in a way to be low friction. These are the kinds of things that happen when a passionate engineer wants to make his design work. He starts with the sexy twisty aluminum extend-o bar, but the design really has to follow through in the details. The gears, the nuts, the fasteners, the tolerances, the material selection, the GD&T and manufacturing. Good engineering on display.

    I opted for the Havak triads. Although they aren't exactly quick to change weight , I rarely need to. A change in handle position is usually all that is needed to get the desired resistance. They feel like a cross between the constant tension of a cable matchine and the balance of a db. I'll definitely check out those mag plates when they're restocked.

    Great in-depth review as always, you would be a great mechanical engineer if you so desired? Also, if I fell off that bench like you did in that clip I would break my arm, I would definitely need a fill in stunt man! (I am not 20 yrs old anymore) LOL. The biggest deal breaker and issue I have with the Snode dumbbells which you touched on is definitely the 10 pound increments, when doing lateral raises, or flys, drop sets, supersets, or rehab work 10 pounds make a big difference, as not everyone is jacked and swole like yourself as you very well know. I do understand of course when you drop the weights you should not be worried that they are going to break. I have a pair of the Nuobells and when I do dumbbell rows on my Sorinex bulldog pad I usually put my Bells of Steel crash pads underneath so I can just let them drop without worrying about them breaking. (It isa little time consuming but worth the risk of not breaking them). Those Snode dumbbells do look nice thought in every other aspect. I recently bought a set of 10 pound - 80 pound rep fitness urethane dumbbells after so long of using my Bowflex adjustable/Nuobell adjustable dumbbells. As you know in the Home Gym Business we are alway's upgrading.

  • @DANA-lx8cv
    @DANA-lx8cv3 ай бұрын

    I've never tried the Snode's but I have owned the Nuobells for a few years and never had an issue. To me they have a nice natural feel and i like the knurling----they don't rip my hands apart. I use them more for accessory movements, as I do not find 80 pounds to be enough for serious pressing work, so I have never had a scenario where I have had to drop them. If you want to really use dumbbells pushing it on compounds, IMO, you would be better served by buying a supplemental set or two of conventional 1XX (whatever weight you use), since you would likely drop them after a benching set to failure. The Snode's seem to be a basic copy of the Nuobell design, which is awesome, with some changes. Before them, I had the 90 pound Bowflex ones for a decade and they were certainly ok for the time, but the Nuo based design is superior. Based on my experience with the Nuo's, and this review of the Snode's, it sounds like either will not disappoint. I would disagree that Nuobell's "suck", but I get the need for a thumbnail for views, lol. Adjustable dumbbells are like politicians. They all have flaws and everybody has their favorites, regardless. I do think buying the stand is a must. It just makes adjustables a lot easier to use and also is an excellent anchor point for bands and such.

    My wife dropped one of our Nuobell's, set to 8Kg, from about knee height onto a rug that was on a wooden floor with a cork underlay. The plastic housing broke. Thankfully the warranty process (I'm in AU) was quick and painless and the local distributor was a pleasure to deal with. My only real complaint, aside from how easily it broke, was that the replacement centre/core (the entire handle mechanism was replaced, not just the housing) had a much less aggressive knurl. The difference between our remaining original Nuobell centre and the new one is is obvious in hand, and annoying. Would I buy them again? Probably not, given the AD80's metal case fixes the very thing that broke on my Nuobells.

    Mechanical engineer here. Anybody can over design something and make it bulletproof. It takes a mechanical engineer to balance strength, weight, and cost to design something safe, functional, and cost effective. Just saying, those blue dumbbells may last you your whole life with no issues. Plastics have some amazing capabilities.(Or maybe they won’t. But you should do further testing to demonstrate their failure before trashing them).

    There's pros and cons to all adjustable dumbbells. I freely admit that the Nuobell is not the most durable design, but OTH, it is the design that lets you most use it like a full rack of dumbbells. I've had mine for just over a year now with no issues, but seriously, so what if a handle eventually breaks? A spare handle is cheap, so yes these are easy to repair. I picked up a spare handle in case I ever break one because I don't want to miss a workout. I mean hell, I can change out the handle in a minute or two. (I've already done it once just for shits and giggles.) So, for me, the advantages--fast change, shaped like a dumbbell with no bar between the ends, fast weight changes--outweigh the cons--I might need to replace a handle every few years for $50.

    I'm struggling to decide on buying a set of fixed dumbbells or an adjustable set. The price of a 5-50lb set is pretty close to an 80lb pair of adjustables. While the hex dumbbells take up a lot of space, at least I know they'll last forever and can take the abuse. If I outgrow the 50lb set then I'll have to spend more money on something adjustable like a loadable handle, which can also get pricey. It seems to me there's no such thing as a "one size fits all" piece of equipment, which makes the decision even harder.

    ok maybe it's just me, but i don't get the fascination with dumbbells in a home gym. Beyond bench (and variations) mostly for safety and some arm exercises, i don't get what can't be done with a barbell. Maybe it's just that i went down the Kettlebell and barbell but i don't have any dumbbells and don't really have any burning desire for them. Sure, in a gym, where the rack is right there, yeah i get it. I dunno, mostly just thinking out loud to help the algorithm.

    Nuobells are superior for changing weight. Can't stand having to turn dials. I can set them down and turn the handle to do drop sets quickly and without needing to take my hands off. I would take the Nuobells over these. I've never had them break, but I set them right back into the stand. They don't go heavy enough that I'd need to drop them.

    For whatever reason though, the industry has people convinced speed is the most important feature of the modern adjustable db. Are people really out there dropping 4 to 6 times and their drop sets? Are people really dropping after their first set at max? That's not how drop sets are supposed to work. If you're gonna be rough with your db, get iron masters or baadas. At least then you won't have to walk over to your db rack to cradle/adjust.

    IDK how you can recommend snode over nuobell. -Nuobell starts at 5lb and goes in 5 lb increments as opposed to snode starting at 10 and going in 10 pound increments. Nuobell literally has twice as many weights for the same price -Nuobell has a quicker and more stream line weight changing motion -Nuobell is slightly less expensive compared to the snode -The argument of picking snode over nuobell bc you feel more confident dropping them is silly because both adjustable dumbells have the ability to break when dropping them~ meaning you shouldn't drop either of them. The Nuobells will be ok if you drop them occasionally like a normal person. -The stand for nuobell is substaintly less expensive than the snode stand. -Nuobells are smaller and more compact than the snode dumbells despite being the same weight. You missed the mark on this one Mr. Gluck. However, I love all of your videos. Keep up the great work!

    To be fair the title is maybe a bit click baity but Wynie chose the words and she's right a lot more often than I am. I do hold strong to my thought of not being comfortable in recommending Nuobells. I think they should be more durable and while you may get away with being very delicate and them lasting the truth is their build is incredibly complex with a ton of plastic and it's fragile. If I spent $800 on those and they broke (and I did buy mine) I'd be furious. They definitely have several advantages over Snode as I mentioned in this vid and you've listed some as well. Neither are perfect but if I had to choose one or the other I'd pick Snode's because having taken Nuobells apart... that design can and should be updated. Hope yours last and I'm happy you love them they're just not for me. I appreciate the well thought out and articulate comment!
