The ONLY way a Motorman can bypass the automatic braking system that prevents it from bypassing a Red Signal, is if they MANUALLY "Key" past it The Signals are tied in with switches, it was NOT a "hardware" problem. From earlier stories about it, the person operating the Train that had been vandalized? They were running it from the Conductors location, those are in the middle of the train instead of the Train Operator's in the front. There was absolutely no way they could possibly see what was in front of the train that they were running. They screwed-up BIG time.

Now imagine with all the things happening in the world today and you get stuck in those tunnels! Yikes

The MTA needs to take care better, dirty station and the subway , homeless people sleeping on the subway mentally sick people yelling at other people. Need to start investigating the workers to do better job. also the busses

I love that the reporters are over dramatizing while showing kids that seem to be excited that they were on the train 💀 The reason why they called it minor is because it is. Train wrecks have historically been comparable to a warzone, this was quite tame

This is why conquesters needs to stop! Their behavior and actions today cause a collison and derailment, mutiple delays and suspensions on this and other subway lines, people to being injured, puting lives at risked, and damaged to the R62A subway cars, that I hope all of them will be repaired and not be put out of service until the next generation trains arrive for the number lines in a couple years from now.

NTSB can't hold anyone accountable as they are not a regulatory agency. That job belongs to the FRA or FDOT, possibly NYDOT ( sorry unfamiliar with the specifics for new york) The NTSB is an agency based on investigating accidents and can provide safety recommendations to both fed and local agencies. The regulatory bodies can choose to act on these recommendations. Unsurprisingly, they often don't, and the results are written in blood.

I was on the subway on Tuesday, January 2, and they were having trouble even tgen. Our train was delayed and moved to a local track for some emergency situation on another train.

That actually happened back in 2013 when the 1 train got derailed near 125

The president of the T.A. says "obviously trains are not supposed to bump into each other". Give that genius a raise!!!

Faulty track circuit, or signal passed at danger (running a red signal). Both have led to similar collisions in the past.

40 yr old trains, 100 yr old rail system equals disaster, but lets blame the operators. They're setup for a loss

yes, it’s scary, shocking and it ruins a day but it is indeed a "minor" collision. 24 people shaken up with only light injuries and no loss of life is pretty good so don’t make the mta look like they’re careless about it.

I have seen a group of males wearing ski masks entering the conductors cabin in the J train , I guess some how they got a special door key to gain access, laws needs to be updated so any one entering restricted area could be seriously charged..

WRONG, The Brakes, the Signals and the Switchs are one interlocked system, they are setup to prevent trains from getting to close together, or which track a switch in the track is setup to run a train onto or from. Based on which track a Switch is lined up with, the wrong track gets a Red Signal that will automatically trip the brakes of any train approaching it into Emergency. The only way to bypass a Red Signal, is to bring the train to a full stop, and MANUALLY "Key" past it The only way this could have happened, is if the person running the vandalized train screwed-up, BIG time.

No, I'm mean you are editing this comment that other people could see and saying we're ridiculous for thinking vandals are the initial cause for this, even though it did actually play apart. Think about it, on older trains, the emergency cords are literally out in the open, and anybody can just pull them at any time. This has been done on multiple occasions. The MTA could be held accountable for this and support the investigation by the NTSB and make possibly recommendations. Even though the NTSB won't account the MTA, that has to be done by another organization. I also know the MTA would be at fault for their signaling system since it also played a factor in the incident.

A Conductor has absolutely nothing to do with running a train, they are in the middle of the trains and deal with the doors. A Train Operator's in in the Front and runs the trains, they CAN be run from the middle of the train From earlier articles I saw, the damaged train was being run from the middle. 1st, there is no way they could see ahead of the train they were running. 2nd, because of how the Swtchs, the Signals and their braking systems actually work, there is absolutely no way this could have possibly happen unless the person running the train that had been vandalized, MANUALLY "Keyed Past" a Red Signal while the train was stopped. It had absolutely NOTHING to do with hardware, the person running the damaged train screwed up, BIG time.
