Before Michael and Prince came on the solo scene Teddy was the man. The first male solo act with 5 consecutive platinum albums to start a career.

Good Evening. Michael Jackson and Prince were already on the scene. They just became more popular, and popular, and popular. After Teddy Pendergrass's almost fatal car accident in 1982, he was never the same singer.

@@reginaldjackson4176Of course he wasnt the same after being paralysed from the neck down. Still kept going and sang wonderful, even while being in his wheelchair. Just one of the greatest singers ever besides Barry White, Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross in my opinion.

@@TigraxPlaysGood Morning. Of course he didn't lose his vocal chords, but go back and look at Teddy Pendergrass before the car accident, and after. The car accident changed his life forever, and it had an effect on him as a performer. He was lucky to even still be alive after that accident.

@@reginaldjackson4176 Good Morning. Well he could have lost them. As I said.. of course he wasnt the same after the accident. Its just respectable that he even kept going and making music and singing so wonderful after that horrible event. Watch his 2002 concert. Just beautiful
Lets be clear, teddy is one of those rare vocalist who can sing someone else song as if he wrote it. Whitney was also in that company.
Teddy Pendergrass was something very very special. Amazing voice with bags of swag. Smooth as they come.

This version grabs your soul!!!
One of the greatest covers of all time. 🙏💯
Teddy was a music GOD. He was a big part of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes. Then he went solo and gave us great songs like "Close the Door" "Turn off the lights" "Take me in your Arms Tonight" . Some of the songs you should also review. Smooth dude.

Does anyone else love how he drops his neck back, when he sings "oh yessss" ? He's into the music.
His version gave me goose bumps, WOW!
Smooooth Teddy!! Never failed to give a spectacular performance. We lost him too early. 😊
Lionel Richie wrote this song for the Commodores, but they didn't want it. Their loss!!! Kenny Rogers said "Hey', I'll take it!" And it instantly became a hit. Kenny's version is brilliant and legendary. Lionel and Kenny became life long friends. Teddy put his heart and soul into it here...

Lionel was a member of the Commodores when he wrote the song. I don’t think the Commodores rejected the song. Lionel just wrote it for Kenny Rodgers.

They did indeed reject the song. They thought Lionel songs were getting too pop.

I never heard Teddy's version of this song. I knew Lionel Ritchie wrote, and tailored this song originally for Kenny Rogers. You can't go wrong with either version, although Kenny's version was a major hit back in the day.

He actually wanted Teddy to record it, but he was on tour. He and Kenny were close friends and just got married. He tweeked it and gave it to Kenny
No one did it like Teddy!
Teddy Pendergrass singing 'Close the door' will hit you in ways you could never imagine a simple song doing!! I can barely imagine the countless children that resulted from that beautiful song! I'd love to see your reaction! 😲

Teddy P was underrated. This is one of the greatest covers every sung. Every one of his songs are sung from his heart, pure talent ... RIP And you Miss Rogue, you rock
All right! One of the great ballad singers!
I saw this concert at Hammersmith Odean as a 17 yr old back in 82, we didnt realise what we were witnessing, probably in my opinion one of the greatest soul singers ever, performing in his last tour! A few months after this he had his accident and although he managed to come back, the disability he suffered had a profound impact on his vocals. So happy I found this video is on KZread, which led me to your review such a stunning cover which unfortunately never made it to record RIP Teddy ❤
This was the only time he got to sing this song live. He had his accident before he got to sing it here in America.
WOW This is the first time hearing Teddy's version. Very powerful.
Teddy Pendergrass was a member of Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes of the Sound Of Philadelphia from the early 70's, but his voice was like magic only a few people had his voice like Teddy.
I've only known Kenny Rogers version but Teddy did an amazing job with this song. I like them both a lot.
Teddy takes me to another place - he is totally totally amazing that voice is orgasmic! Am I allowed to say that as a 67 year old lady from the UK?

THANK YOU to whoever recommended this one! Teddy P giving such a soulful performance of this Lionel Ritchie classic. Great reaction!
Such a soulful artist , with so many beautiful songs . I had not heard him in a long time. Made my eyes water just a little. " TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, AND LIGHT A CANDLE "
It’s Called SOUL!❤️
I am crying 😭 it’s so nice R.I.P. Teddy 🙏🏽🕊🕊♥️♥️💋💋
The last missing words were "your'e my lady "
Teddy in his earlier years especially is one of the oft-overlooked performers of the late 70s. I came back to his music only recently and he still sounds amazing to my years.
Beautiful, a mind reader would be fulfilled if inside yours as you watch Teddy Pendergrass sings this.
I could not believe my ears🙂 Pure excellence.
Une des plus belle version de cette magnifique chanson. ❤ repose en paix Teddy
Teddy did put his flavor on this! You should check out Kenny Rogers also. Royce I'd love for you to react to another love song from Roberta Flack...The First Time I Saw Your Face(first take). It's a song that always reminds me of my wife of 50 years. It came out just before we got married. We celebrated our 50th anniversary virtually last year and our daughters used it during the event. And she is the love of my life. ❤

Thanks for reminding me of that Roberta Flack's classic hit. I will most certainly add that to the collection of romantic ballads that I'm compiling for a very special lady that I met. And in all likelihood we will eventually share the same last name.

Good morning watching from Guyana 🇬🇾teddy magnificent master of soul champion let me tell you hun teddy was it all i dont think there is no one like him yet he was one hell of a handsome sexy magnificent that baritone voice send ladies crazy smooth tall dark handsome baby champion forever Rip handsome we love you forever
I would never try to compare Kenny & Teddy because each man brought something to the table. What I can appreciate, is the overwhelming emotions, the passion, the underlying sexual and emotional plea, each of them singing to their “special Lady”. Outstanding live performances from both men. I loved your reactions too Ms Rogue R!
Teddy was the lover man for us ladies back then💞💞
Please react to "your my latest, greatest, inspiration", by Teddy P. It is one of his most heartfelt contributions to the world. YourAuntie ❤
Rogue Rxyce, I just love your expression when the music hits you. I'm impressed that for a young lady you love the meaningful balladas the I grew up with in arguably the best decade of music which was the 80's.
Absolutely stunning voice he always gives me goosebumps.
Teddy Pendergrass was one of the Great voices of all time. He was with a group called "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes." Please react to one their hits named: "Wake up Everybody." This was one of those "Message Songs" that is just as relevant today as it was back in the 80's.
TEDDY PENDERGRASS IS MY FAVORITE!!!! RIH!!!!
For me Teddy's version is the best , his vocals 💯
I think Teddy's and Kenny's versions are both great one is soulful the other is beautiful!🙏🦋👍
I love that you reviewed this if you haven’t watched his documentary “if you don’t know me by now” I highly recommend he changed my life and because of this song I have his face tattooed on my left arm he was too good to be true best love performance of all time in my opinion ❤️
Listen to the platters my prayer
This was great, U also should see his "LIVE PERFORMANCE (Ladies only concert)" of him performing "Turn off the Lights." He had the whole lady crowd under a TRANCE. Something to behold 🔥🔥🔥🔥

The BEST VERSION OF LADY. TEDDY ORIGINAL G
Wow, this is my favorite version right here!
Love and miss this your voice. Teddy, Teddy, Teddy. No one had the sex appeal that you have and can sing a song with such emotion and love. I have 3 kids to prove it. Uhh. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
He was the voice
He was called the black Elvis. I could see it. He had the talent, and the looks. That bastard. Yeah. Peace
Teddy P’s first five albums went platinum
Kenny's version gets the woman's phone number, Teddy's version the women take you to their bedroom.
Love is a many splendid thing!!!

One of the greats! Nice date night packages my Ex and I used to give our friends: Wine, candles, and a Teddy or Barry White CD. Lol
I've been pumping this some for years!!!!!!! to anyone who'll liste to me. He just owned this some and I see why no one ever signed off for him to record this version
The 'panties era'...these great singers had to collect those trophies thrown at the stage where they sang !! 😅 ...legends par se !!
Teddy "Bear" Has so many great sons from the early '70s as lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and as a solo artist from '76 through the 80's. The songs I loved growing up to were from his days with the Blue Notes were "The Love I Lost" and "Wake Up Everybody".
Super song !
Oh teddy. Sigh. So beautiful 💕. The song was beautiful too.

Teddy was always such a top notch performer....I still prefer Kenny rogers version he has such ease and flow, and quiet power. Tank you Lionel for this amazing piece...would have loved to hear the Commodores do this.
