I think ''not handsome'' is a reference to a backhanded compliment given two decades ago by the director of The Notebook, when discussing Gosling's suitability for playing the leading man in that movie.

This is likely a reference to an infamously fond but double-edged historical remark made directly to Gosling by the director of The Notebook - about his qualities for playing a leading man. As we all know now, that movie turned out to be a breakthrough role for him.
He can't act though
