Nostalgia Trap - Episode 51: Felix Biederman

Felix Biederman is one of the hosts of Chapo Trap House, a podcast that mixes relentless satire with incisive political analysis. In this conversation, recorded less than 24 hours after Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, Felix dissects his feelings about this surreal moment, tells me about his youth in Hyde Park, Chicago, and shares his perspectives on war, the Democratic Party, the appeal of MMA, and much more.

It's kinda cool hearing Felix hint at Fighting In the Age of Loneliness so long ago.

also "performative softness" is pretty much the perfect phrase for it. this idea that Woke Men are supposed to speak softly, maybe act a little guilty over their privilege. that those Rough Men who manspread and enjoy combat sports are beneath them. it's a kind of classism / elitism for sure. the funniest example of "performative softness" i've seen is grown ass men after the election posting photos of themselves crying the part about MMA, and coastal elite's instinctive disdain for it, reminds me of some closely related snobbery where people sneer at pro-wrestling being "fake": they have such condescension, such disdain for rural people that they actually think the audience for WWE consists of rubes who don't get that the matches are scripted. they're not retarded. of course they know. wrestling is art.

53:00 I love Felix's real sounding anger because I feel that, it makes me so mad to feel this shame and hatred and anger at these people who get to affect our lives so powerfully.
