Northern Ireland - tasty dishes with kelp | What's cookin'
Rathlin Island, Northern Island, is the country’s only inhabited island. Life there has adapted over centuries, with livelihoods based largely around fishing and farming. The cuisine on the island reflects this lifestyle, as seen here with unconventionally delicious recipes using kelp and crab meat, as well as the traditional Irish stew.
What's cookin' is about traditional culinary recipes from different European regions.

Where the Irish Sea and the mighty Atlantic Ocean meet marred by the roaring sea and picturesque cliffs meet, lies the rough island.
Between the Irish Sea and the mighty Atlantic Ocean, amidst picturesque cliffs and roaring ocean swell, lies the tiny island of Rathlin. Only 120 people call this magnificent place home. Fishing and the harvesting of seaweed are the traditional economic backbones here. Seaweed was once collected on the coast and used in the linen industry for bleaching. Kate Burns and her sons now want to revive this old tradition - but in a new way: They cultivate the kelp on long ropes in the sea for use in the kitchen. In boiling water, the olive-coloured leaves change their colour into a vivid, pungent green. Cut into "noodles" they are a spicy ingredient in salads and soups. Kate's son Philip McFaul is the family chef, and is always on the hunt for new exotic and interesting ways to use such ingredients. Following in the footsteps of the Japanese, he uses seaweed as a tasty binding ingredient. He prepares exotic vegetable wraps with crab meat, but also a traditional Irish stew with lamb, vegetables and potatoes. Kate cooks a Japanese Dashi soup with her laboratory assistant Sarah Barry. Here the seaweed forms a classic Japanese soup stock and gives a strong, spicy taste.

This type of live deserves to be known rather then a shallow existence of celebrity's that fill the media this days, and so on .....

Hello from the Scotland of the East ........ Shillong, India.Love the interdependence and spirit
It's a bit strange to hear that Ireland has no history with seaweed. Dulaman was a saving grace back when other things were scarce. Love seeing kelp and the like back in these recipes. Such beauty and flavor.

I read about two months ago that Arranmore island off of mainland Ireland actually is inviting people to come and live there. There are about 700 people there now. You may want to look into it, if you are serious.

Really enjoyed that, the way of life seems quite devoid of the woes one would find in general society and provides valuable insight as to how communities can be much closer to one another. Ordered a big batch of Kelp as I watched, gonna get my chef's hat on.

If some people can eat kelp, I think it can be used as animal feed as well, I think pig and chicken can eat everything. Why not using kelp to feed chicken or pig, the chicken and pig then convert it to protein that human nowadays are familiar with.
yo i wanna live there so bad
Thumps down corona virus!! Long life tasty dishes with kelp..what is cooking!!!!
❤
Seaweed .I really love that.
😍😍😍👍🏻
An Irish Burrito.
Unfortunately kelp was the food of the poorest of the poor in the old days , and only now is it's potential as a renewable resource beginning to be appreciated . We need to be more open to the opportunities for new resources and need to look to the past to find the old ways that have been abandoned, to renew our economy and take advantage of what surrounds us.
Thanks iseeplanet i've been move here and more gladly as well...
leaves like a coconutpalm
I adore it in Japanese cuisine in the form of nori and it adds seafood flavor to any dish as a substitute for flesh...but with all food pros and cons come with the earthly environment at question.
are the kelp noodle made out of raw seaweed?
The main problem is that fish is Unfit for Human Consumption as humans have been using the seas as both a Larder and a Sewer.
Hmmm, food channel that calls edamame mung beans?other than that it's a really nice show.
is that sargasum or ulva
I want to learn how to grow the seaweed. We live in America in the pacific north west and we are not using this important vegetable.

There are many seaweed farms in Japan which you can learn. It's not that difficult to grow them, and they're very sustainable. The only enemy of seaweeds is the sea urchins since they're like locusts for the seaweeds, which they eat a lot of seaweed. On the bright side, you can sell that sea urchin roe to the Asian market, and they are not cheap in the market. As I've seen in this video, they used the method in which they seeded a long line of rope with kelp seed. They collect the microscopic kelp seed and grow them in a nursery with the string, so the seeds can attach themselves on the long cord. Once they're mature enough, the long cord is set to the open ocean and let it grow. Certain seasons are ideal for growing and harvest time, mostly to avoid stormy seasons since it can damage the crops. The only things needed to worry when growing them are location, water temperature, seasonal weather, and sea urchins.
You said Rathlin was in the northwest of Northern Ireland it is actually to the East of Northern Ireland which has an Eastern Coast and Northern Coast its western side is totally landlocked with the Irish Republic.

The Roman Catholic church is mystery babylon. The protestant reformation did not just happen for no reason nor was the reformation ever a mistake!
But is it organic? And GMO free? And free ranging? And allowed to go where it wants? And not invasive? And harboring lots of tiny sea critters? And asymbiotic? And not uptaking all the oil spills?
@pmf4168
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's free range, yes GMO free, it is attached to a rope so not free ranging 🤣, It is a native species and we take the spores from local seaweed. No oil spills here thankfully. All the best Phil .
