We're getting many calls and emails from customers trying to determine if their plants survived our epic February 2021 winter storm in North Texas. In this video, Ken goes over the plants' Village Green feels will not survive our February deep freeze.
- Spring Bouquet Viburnum
- Fringe Flower Loropetalum
- Indian Hawthorn

Variegated Pittosporums were hammered as well. Looks like they are NOT coming back as well.

I agree, they probably aren't. I've seen a few that have soft tips and might have buds but I'm not very convinced. We'll know more in about another month.

My Indian Hawthorne looked terrible in summer 2021 but it was still alive and by summer 2022, it was fine. My waxleaf ligustrums are another story. They were over 7 ft tall and I had two cut them down to stumpy little bushes after the freeze because about 90% of the upper branches and leaves were dead. Going into the 3rd summer since that event, they are still pretty pathetic looking and they don't grow vigorously anymore. Probably should have pulled them up back in 2021.

Years ago when I got in this business, waxleaf ligustroms were commonly planted. A lot of those froze out and I don’t see them used very often anymore.

Should you be encouraged to see a few small red shoots on Indian Hawthorns in Fort Worth TX?

Maybe. My guess is it would take years though for them to come back

My butterfly bush tree looks dry the leaves have not fallen off. Looks like the tree has a crack in it.

I don’t plant of lot of these but if the trunk or limbs are cracking, that’s usually a bad sign.

I have a huge oak tree on my property in Mabank Tx that is not putting on leaves yet? The rest of them are? I'm very Concerned, is it dead? Not sure what kind of oak it is, just know it's an oak.

My guess is that it will come back but if it’s an important tree, I’d recommend contacting an arborist to look at it and make sure.

Ken what about the Southern Wax Myrtle tree. Leaves are all brown. I have been watering since freeze and have yet to see any new growth. Also planted 4 wax ligustrum shrubs last summer. Two have lost leaves entirely the other two have less than 5% of any new growth. My variegated pittsiporum shrub that is over 20 years old has not shown any knew growth and most of dead leaves have fallen off. Any advice? Thanks

I'm not a fan of wax myrtles because they are short lived tree and tend to split during freezes. I've seen quite a few around town that look like they won't make it. A couple of good replacements might be little gem magnolia along with savanah or yaupon hollies. Most of the wax ligustrums froze out 30 years ago. I frequently use variegated pitts in my landscapes and I've seen them survive quite a few freezes but I think this freeze killed most of them. I've seen some that maybe, just maybe have buds coming out on them but that might be just wishful thinking on my part. I will still use them because they are great plants to use on the corner of homes to frame the home.

What would be a good replacement for cleyera in a mixed sun/shade environment? We have several across the whole front of the house and it looks like we've lost them all... Part of the house is in shade and part sun. The ones in the sun did much better and were larger and more full than the ones in the shade, which stayed small and were always very lean looking. Also, what would be a good replacement for a yaupon holly tree? We have them on the front corners of the house and they are terribly aggressive with their roots and suckers, making it almost impossible to plant underneath/around them! Thanks in advance!
