I’m hoping the snow insulated them but I’m not sure. 30 years ago a lot of them needed to be cut down so they could come back from their roota

Thanks for the video, I have been searching for answers for a month now. My tree is the only one on the block that have not bloom. As of today I see some small stems but no bud on the branches. Not sure what to make of it.

Thanks again for your video and commentary Ken! I have several Live Oaks and have been concerned. One of them has already shed it's old leaves and new buds are showing! All others have not but I'll be patient. One question; should we give them extra water at this time? I was thinking they may be in distress and a good soaking might help. Thanks!

I would water normally. Giving extra water is likely to add more stress to them and to your lawn.

A lot of live oaks here in Austin never did shed the brown leaves, and don't look like they survived. I guess all we can do is wait and see. Most look ok, but there are a lot that don't. My 50-year old Afgan pine has mostly brown needles, but a few green ones near the top. I'm hoping it will make it.

My live oaks came back after the freeze and the canopy looks healthy, but I just noticed the bark is detaching from the trunk on a few. I am not sure if anything can be done about it, but I am pretty sure that means they are dying :-/

Hi Peter, I remember 30 years ago a lot of the crepe myrtles around town had to be cut down and they started over. They haven't started leafing out yet so it's hard to tell but when I've scratched their bark, they all seem to have green which is a very good sign.

Thank you for this video. It’s April 9th here in central Tx, and I have 5 oak trees that still have not started to bud yet like my other oak trees. Some of the dead brown leaves have fallen, but many are still left on the tree. How long should I give them before definitively labeling them dead?

I am in the same position with my live oaks. The biggest and oldest tree did fine, losing all of its leaves but with new buds formed and mostly open now. I estimate that tree to be 50+ years old based on size. The smaller is probably 25-30 years old and it looks completely dead at this point. I will wait until June to give it a full chance to return but it's not looking good right now.

I have six Live Oak trees on my property. Four of the six are starting to show new leaves coming out (as of 3-19-20). However, I have two Live Oak trees that are not showing any evidence of new growth. These two trees are interesting. When I purchased them seven years ago I was told that they are "cloned" trees from Florida. If all this is true, (the two trees look very much alike) I'm concerned the Live Oak trees from Florida may not be able to hold up as well as the ones from North Texas. UPDATE 3-27-21: One of my two "twin" Live Oak trees is showing slight growth with small buds at the very top. This tree still has 80% of its old leaves. The other twin Live Oak has about 90% of its old leaves and I can observe no new growth.

True native Texas live oaks are Quercus Fusiformis which are hardier than the Southern live oaks which are Quercus Virginiana. You can't barely notice a difference just by looking but they are 2 separate species.

Thank you for this! My two oak trees are about 25 years old and have always been healthy, and look just like the ones in this video. They’ve dropped about half of their brown leaves but show no signs of new green buds whatsoever. Should I be concerned/do anything right now? Any advice would be appreciated!

We're still in early spring. We'll know more by late April/early May. My guess is it will be fine. There is nothing you need to do right now. Water normally, don't give it extra water because you will stress your trees and lawns even more.

In Dallas we’ve had lots of rain so we haven’t needed to water. I’m not an arborist but I would be watering normally. In the spring that is about a 1/2” of water or about 30 minutes per week for normal spray heads

I have three live oaks on my property. Two did exactly what you said they would do; dropped their leaves and budded out new ones. I have one tree, however, that still has dead leaves on it and has not budded, per say. What HAS happened, is it has started putting out new twigs all along the existing three trunk and branches, and leaves are starting to bud from those, leaving all the old. What should I do with this tree? It looks terrible and I'm afraid will attract pests to the old, dead foliage.

  • @VillageGreenLawnHealth

When trees are stressed they create suckers at their trunk and along their limbs instead of growing from their tips. My guess is your tree will need to be a replaced but before you decide that you should as an arborist to look at it.

I'm in Pa, up North, BUT, I have a friend in KIlleen Texas who said that the Freezamageddon in Texas had KILLED many Southern Live oaks. Quercus Virginiana. And, so the Plateau Live oak Quercus Fusiformis is the only Live oak that she will plant now. The Fusi is MUCH hardier, I have 2 growing here in zone 6a Pa, and they've been doing great here down to - 13 F here one winter. Have you had many Q. V live oaks die in your area? Killeen is near Austin, so, not far North, but she'd seen many dead Q. V. Live oaks in her area. It's sad to see some nice big Q. V live oaks die from a big freeze, she said it got down to -2F. people died from the power being off and freezing to death and house roofs fell in and no help. The power grid being messed up.

@@chickenfarm09Do you mean MY L.O's? If you do, my Fusi died, but not from a freeze, my dogs were peeing on the trunk and digging around it. I have another one though, and it's doing fine. It's a Quartz mountain Live oak, from Quartz mountain in Oklahoma. So far our winter here in SW Pa has been very warm, and hasn't gone down below zero all winter, we did have 1 night or 2 that was 7 F though, but our lows have generally been about 22 F , but lately, it's been above freezing, even down right warm. As for the gal in Killeen, Texas, I forget if her L.O's lost their leaves and looked bad. Most likely they had.
