Did you know that a lot of that dinosaur bone is radioactive? A rancher friend of mine, had a small place out by Fruita, Colorado, in the 50's during the uranium boom, he ran a minerals drilling rig. He collected tons of the bone and other interesting fossils and rocks. Apparently, the dissolved uranium salts, were the minerals that petrified the bone. He was showing me a huge pile of his finds one time, i went to sid on the edge of the pile, and, he warned me not to, if i ever wanted to have normal children. He once tried to haul a large femur bone in an old pickup, when the loader dropped it into the pickup bed, the bed folded in half, that, stuff is very dense rock. I love your videos, reminds me of when i used to get out in that country.

I do remember going to visit that dam in 1990! Wow! 29 years ago..I may be considered one of those fossils now.. 😢 We were visiting people in Vernal. Beautiful country! 109 miles from Vernal to Rock Springs. LOL, I find myself wanting to answer you. I miss trucking with my husband. He’s gone now. Truckin’ in Heaven. Lung Cancer. That was a bad habit back in those days..made every thing stink. Love your video’s. They are really enjoyable. Find myself wanting to get the Thermos out and pouring some coffee...

Thx for film these routes Mike! I can come here to see the routes the wife and I have traveled on our recent road trips With much better video quality than we can do ourselves. You have a much more stable Platform, and an elevated one as well! LOL! Just did 191 southbound from the Tetons this past June of 2022, all the way to Vernal, Dinosaur, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, to Denver in a rented class B motorhome. Loved this route, But wished I was Doing it on my Goldwing Motorcycle on that stretch for sure! We turned in the motorhome in Denver and took our bike out of storage and went all over Colorado for the 2nd week of our trip!! We are from south Florida..

Flaming Gorge Reservoir is the largest reservoir in Wyoming, on the Green River, impounded behind the Flaming Gorge Dam. Construction on the dam began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. The reservoir stores 3,788,900 acre feet (4.6735×109 m3) of water when measured at an elevation of 6,040 feet (1,841 m) above sea-level (maximum). The reservoir is known for its world-class fishing for lake, brown and rainbow trout.

I enjoy your travelogue and comments along the way. Lots of places are new and beautiful discoveries. This one was a regular monthly business trip, north to south. Name pronunciation corrections if we may: Vernal= Vernl, Uinta=Youintah. The mines north of Vernal are phosphates, San Francisco Chemical Co. The EPA legislation of 1972 require land reclamation to the same topography as was before extraction, and the use of native flora. The country is habitation of mule deer, elk, moose and antelope, along with the usual coyotes, badgers, skunks, squirrels, fox, and a plethora of birds. Thanx again for the videos.

Took this exact route only other direction in August 2020. I have been over the Flaming Gorge Dam several times but I have never gotten the view you gave me into the canyon. I am always driving and not as high as in your truck! Awesome! I have taken the other route on the west side. I have pictures of the bridge. I also have pictures of the dam from the direction you were going. There is a spot to pull off and read about the dam. I think they repaved the road from Grand Junction to Rangely because I don't remember it being that bad last year. I could be wrong. Thanks for the ride!

Geologist here. I couldn't help chuckling a bit with the terrain described as "hills". It's the Uintah or Uinta Mountain Range, one of the few east-west ranges in North America. The Uinta's have a quite unique origin having begun their existence as a widening chasm, one arm of a 3-armed radial rift system. The Uinta's are a failed arm, the Pacific Ocean opening for the first time as the other 2-arms lengthened and split off some sized chunk of North America and it began drifting west. As a failed arm (aka aulocogen), both sides of the chasm gradually collapsed allowing the deep rift basin to fill with silica rich sediments that now exist as a quartzite mostly. 191 is one of the really good geologic drives in the west, especially since they began marking the road with the various formation names.

the mine (J.R. Simplot) is phosphate which is slurry pipelined to Rock Springs. And from the base of the mountain to the Red Cloud Loop turn off over the years there has been a lot of trucks lose their brakes and crash on those switchbacks. Every place you see the concrete barriers trucks have left the road and most drivers get killed. Before the run-a-way truck escapes were put in (only 10 or so years ago) there were generally 4-5 truck wrecks a year coming down off that mountain from I-80. At 6:24 and 7:01 are the two curves where most truck wrecks occur. We refer to those truckers as "Flatlanders" You are correct the green fields are where they have mined and reclaimed the land which were once covered with Utah juniper cedar trees.

They used to grow a lot of alfalfa for seed out in Nevada and Utah, one variety was called "Vernal" i wonder if they named the town for it. That lake is pretty good sized, but, as i look out of my house i see Lake Superior, it contains one tenth of all of the fresh water on the planet, ant the only bigger lake by area is Lake Victoria, in Africa. Lake Baikal in Russian is smaller in area, but bigger in volume and millions of years old. Superior is only as old as when the Glaciers started to melt a little over ten thousand years ago.

When the first issued CDLs, I thought it was idiotic to allow drivers that couldn't read to take an oral test. Many drivers took the oral true/false test because they had a 50/50 chance of getting the correct answer compared to 25% on the multiple choice written test. Reading is very important to driving a truck. I found out that we had 3 drivers that graduated high school that could barely read.
