I'm sure you saw the signs for the KOA at Devil's Tower. In 1993 took a family vacation to Black Hills in our 1990 Ford Tempo and 1964 Continental pop-up trailer (basically a canvas tent on a box with wheels). Our way back to Colorado included a night at the Devil's Tower KOA. The KOA sits right outside the monument boundary. Every night they showed Close Encounters of the Third Kind under the stars. That was a great experience for my 10 year old son whose favorite movie at the time was Close Encounters.

Devils Tower was the first declared US National Monument. I visited in person IN 1978...Close Encounters was my favorite movie back then. My family hiked around the base of the monument. We took photos. It took less than 1 hour to walk around the massive structure. The rocks at the base of the tower are HUGE. It was well worth the visit! The next night we stayed at a hotel in Wyoming. Close Encounters was playing at a local drive-in theater. Yes, we piled in the car and went to the drive-in that night! Good memories.

Can't hike to the top of Devil's Tower, you can mountain climb to the top, saw people doing that. You can hike around it, very nice paved trail (probably for wheelchairs). If you're into nature, definitely worth the trip.

Devil's Tower is a sacred spot for indigenous Indians in the area. It is closed to the public from time to time so they can pray and hold their sacred ceremonies. I walked around it the day it reopened to the public. The trees were covered with prayer ties. I added my prayers to theirs. It's an easy climb and the view from the top is sweeping and beautiful.

re: discussion around 19 minutes about getting an unwanted additional line with a new mobile. In New Zealand, it is a very simple matter of transferring the "SIM" ("Subscriber Identity Module", a smart card inside a mobile phone, carrying an identification number unique to the owner, storing personal data, and preventing operation if removed) from one mobile to another. If a mobile is lost, the agent of the "mobile carrier company" can terminate the operation of the lost "SIM" (they have unique identity numbers - something quite different from the Mobile telephone number) and create a replacement with the same mobile number as was the one lost, and put that in a new mobile device. It sounds as if your mobile networks are set up in a "make it difficult" mode.

Mike, did you notice the little mountain, upon which Devil's Tower, and the red-colored scarp to the right of Devil's Tower? Those WERE featured in "Close Encounters". We saw those first, when Richard's and Melinda's characters were held prisoners at the "Shadow Gov't's." compound. Then they successfully escaped, made it to the top of the little mountain, then circled around to the Northwest side, where the Gov't. had constructed that landing strip, in the little valley. I don't know if that valley actually exists though, in real life. That movie is a TREASURE!! If the National Park Service an allow Location Shooting for a Major Motion Picture, then they certainly can grant QUALITY LOGISTICS, an EXCLUSIVE Freight Contract, to service them, and Park Concessionaires, so that you can take your rig, ALL the way in, as you make drop-offs, deliveries, and pickups! Now, wouldn't THAT be exciting??
