North Korea hotel has "hidden" 5th floor

Dr. Calvin Sun recalls going to the "hidden" 5th floor of the hotel, the same hotel where Otto Warmbier stayed during his trip to North Korea.

I understand that some would want to go for various purposes but to me, why would you want to visit a country that most people already living there are trying to escape? Like what logic is that?

It's called curiosity and it's part of us, human beings. Curiosity stems from people's deep-rooted desire to resolve uncertainty regardless of the harm it may bring. ... Curious people do not always perform consequentialist cost-benefit analyses and may be tempted to seek the missing information even when the outcome is expectedly harmful. I'm not going to lie. I'd like to go to North Korea and see it with my own eyes. But I'm definitely not going to that 5th floor. So my brain probably discards some risk about going to the country but not to the extent where it could be so harmful as going to that 5th floor.

False. There was no physical injury done to Otto and the doctors won't even take an autopsy. He died due to intense trauma thinking about his sentence. If he was truly murdered, then all of the medias would already be saying it.

Because it's not about thrill or danger, it's actually experiencing how much nk has changed over the past years and how its like living or even feel like living in nk. It really makes me sad how people think that you shouldnt go to nk because its so 'dangerous'. I mean yes, it is a 'dangerous' country but at least think of it as a country that needs help.

People seem to be talking a lot about how stupid it is for them to be there, or that they should just follow the hotel's/country's rules. But seriously there is no sign (At least not in English) that says guests aren't allowed on that floor. My friend nearly had a heart attack when he stumbled up there on accident (He used the stairs instead of the elevator, because he was warned about extended power outages going on at the time). And really, this floor looks a bit different from the rest of the building, but that drab grey with signs all over the walls is pretty standard fair over there, so how is a foreigner supposed to know? I mean really, since it's one of the only hotels they allow foreigners, you'd think they'd take better precautions! At least a locked door or something would be all it takes! Maybe they've fixed it by now after all the messes it's caused, but back then it was an easy mistake to make...

@@MpovedaOficial So you think it's disrespectful to bring those atrocities to light on the world stage? To just let the regime hide those things and act like nothing is wrong with it? Should the Allies have just done nothing about the concentration camps in WW2 then since it was a part of Nazi Germany's reality? They should have just looked the other way, and not tried to gather evidence of the things that were taking place? That makes no sense at all. I never excused the fact they were making fun of it, I only said if they don't want someone to go there they should take some amount of precautions to deter it, else they shouldn't get mad when people go there on accident.

Raph K I second what someone else said about how the problem is you probably won't know all the rules. I just read one man's account of time in North Korea and he told about how he had purchased a flag as a souvenir and left it on the bus while he toured one area. Later that day his guide confronted him about this and interrogated him, warning him he could get into serious trouble for abandoning the flag. He was very apologetic and assured the guide he had meant to retrieve it later that day, but it was a close call over something that the guy never gave a second thought to.

ARROGANCE. That's it. SOME of these travelers especially if they have an AMERICAN PASSPORT would always want to PUSH the envelope. As a tourist, they should've been happy and satisfied with what they are given and offered. The elevator skipped 5th floor for a reason. Question it if you want to but don't invade the area. Do you know what I mean? now, the American government/military might use this PETTY REASON to initiate a war against North Korea like what happened with Afghanistan and Iraq. Just wait.

Respect ANY country you are visiting, and if you would like to take mementos home, ASK your GUIDE how to BUY gifts from the country / hotel / town you are staying at. Often if you ask nicely, you can get real hand made crafts from the local shops or local people - something that you would never expect to find in a store in USA. Note MANY countries will not accept US Dollars, and you will have to also ask to exchange your foreign money for local money, and pay a fee.

In North Korea the only place you can get your money changed to North Korean money is at specific department store and you’re only allowed to keep that money while in the department store and have to change it back when you leave. It’s illegal for foreigners to have North Korean money on them. Tour guides tell people to bring Euros or Chinese Won and there are a few stores their allowed to shop at that will take these currencies. You may be able to get a gift from a local but you can’t shop at a local store.
