The storm sirens at noon on Saturdays is actually the "Beer Whistle". It signals the time at which you can start drinking except on football game days when it signals the time that you must start drinking.

Living here 14 yrs+ its nice, quiet, not densely populated. However it does have a crime rate, kinda expensive to live, and hella humid in the summer.

How bad are the tornadoes for Norman? I know OKC gets hit pretty good but I got the impression that Norman was not as bad? Is a storm shelter a necessity there?

I graduated from OU in 1982 so you can do the math, I’m 62. Norman is a great college town, a suburb of a city in OKC that when I was in Norman, downtown was NOT in the least a nice place in OKC. If you were looking for trouble, drugs, or a prostitute, you went to DTOKC. Thank god OKC got smart passing MAPS in 1993 and the change is phenomenal. Still even with that now, for a concert, especially at the great Zoo Amphitheater where I saw Zappa, Talking Heads, Dire Straits just to name a couple, there was no reason to leave Norman. I am from Tulsa which I consider a superior city to OKC, but OKC has done a remarkable job the last 30 years changing their reputation considerably positive. Tulsa will alway be the cultural center of Oklahoma but Norman has the coolest vibe, great university and feels like it’s own town. Norman or Tulsa will be where I retire as I have lived and watched Los Angeles turn into the cesspool it has unfortunately become the last 25 years of my life. Norman is beautiful. Don’t miss it if you’re in proximity.

So, my girlfriend and I are planning to move to Norman in the next two, maybe three years and we're going to be moving from Southwest Virginia. My girlfriend wants to get a degree in nursing and I'm wanting to chase supercell thunderstorms there. We don't have any credit and it's a cause for concern for us. Are there any places in Norman that can be rented without the need for credit that are in a decent area to kickstart living there? The reason why I ask is here in Southwest Virginia, decent living is VERY scarce and low income apartments are pretty dangerous and we'd love to have a place that's not in a crime hotspot.

I guess you don't know Norman very well if you want away from crime. If you move to Oklahoma try another town but I can tell you crime in Norman is high and it's spread into all small towns outside of Okc. This is a real estate agent and will tell you whatever. Don't be fooled and conned as it's typical in Oklahoma
