Non-photo blue line pencils with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

A brief tutorial on how to turn graphite pencils into non-photo blue lines using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements. The blue pencils can then be printed onto bristol for inking without having to worry about messing things up!

Thank you! An inker who was looking over my brother and mine's artwork suggested that I ink his pencils since I had a firmer hand but we don't get together often enough in person for him to hand me his pencils to ink. This makes it alot easier - he can scan it and send it to me, I can make it nonphoto blue, print it, and ink it! :D Thank you!

Thank you very much for this. Not all of us can afford Adobe Photoshop Pro, so your work-around for Adobe Photoshop Elements was wonderful.

ok very cool! if you're interested, the reason I found your channel is I created a site for creative streamers last year, and we actually use KZread as our streaming platform which makes it easy to get involved with our community. the site is www.watchmework.com if you want to check it out. our goal is to connect creatives together in an online co-working space so we can learn from one another

Thank You. I was trying to figure out how to do this becouse I had forgotten. This way feels a little different then what I learned before but its a lot more effective. (also I forgot the cmyk values for non-photo blue but now I feel stupid for not remembering it.)

@SPICSTER Once your image is inked, scan it in full color. Making sure that the image is in RGB color mode, go into your Channels Palette and select the Blue channel. This will eliminate most of the blue lines. Then you can convert the image to Grayscale color mode, and use Levels (CTRL-L or CMD-L) to get rid of any stray lines.

@shadowolf2k I use Utrecht house brand bristol and just run it through a regular inkjet printer. I've had trouble using Strathmore 300 series in my inkjet--it's a thicker paper and tends to jam.

I have Photoshop Elements 7, tried the Hue Saturation method, but the Hue slide bar only goes from -180 to 180. Any way around this?

How do you print on bristol? Is there a specific printer?

I have a question about inking over the blue line print out: Can you ink on top of laser printed blue lines or do they need to be inkjet printed? Thanks so much for the lesson!!

it depends on the inking tools you use, but inkjet prints work with the widest variety of inks, so I would go with that. glad you liked the video!

I ink with pens and brushes old school style, but I've never tried inking over laser blue lines. I just got a brother printer scanner, and I have to fidget with it a lot to get the bristol to go through the manual feed. I think the Strathmore 300 might be thicker than what the printer is capable of. But it seems like the Strathmore is kind of standard bristol, so I don't know if there's a better bristol that can be fed through easier. And yes the video helped me out tons thanks so much. I really mean it.

followed the steps but when I change duotone I no longer can save it as a jpeg. Why is this?

If you flatten the image and convert the color mode to RGB, you should be able to save it as a JPG.
