Can someone within the field point towards the best textbooks to get into the theories, where the field is and the immediate frontier technical tasks ahead for bio-linguistics? Thank you.

You should ask that question on Quora to a linguist. You may even want to email Noam Chomsky himself. Be aware that he does take hundreds of emails daily.

If you want to get into this field, you should read a bit on its evolution first, so I'd suggest you start with Chomsky's Syntactic Structures, follow with the basics on the Principles and Parameters Theory (Haegman has a good textbook, Introduction to Government and Binding), and then read on Minimalism (for instance Hornstein, Nunes, and Grohmann, Understanding Minimalism). The field is constantly evolving, but to understand its ties to bio-linguistics, you should look into neurolinguistics and its history first, to see how that evolved as well. Start with the basics on the language faculty, for instance Pinker, The Language Instinct, and you can go on with more complex stuff (I recommend Hauser, M., N. Chomsky, and W. T. Fitch (2002) “The Language Faculty: What is it, who has it, and how did it evolve?” in Science, 298, 1569-1579). Hope it helped!

i feel sorry for the folks asking questions around the hour mark. they don't have the luxury of going for naps, sleeping on it, and generally taking days to watch Nim Chimsky pack an infinite array of epiphanies into a finite packet of time
