For his first large concert, it wasn't well known among fans that Charley (correct spelling by the way) was black. He began by saying "Friends, I realize it's a little unique, me coming out here - with a permanent suntan - to sing country and western to you. But that's the way it is."

FYI: Darius Rucker has been the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish since its formation in 1986.

The greatness of Darius Rucker. From Hootie and the Blowfish, to reggae, to being one of the best country singers now, there's nothing he can't play.

The chorus of this song was written by Bob Dylan in 1973 and was never released as an official recording. Decades later, Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show wrote the verses; it was released on their first album. It's a song with a neat history.

Yep just to add that Charley Pride was the first black musician ever inducted into the 'Country Music Hall of Fame' and also he was the first solo black man to sing the Super Bowl National Anthem (Super Bowl VIII 1974) :)

The root of "originally" is "origin" so in the true sense of the word, originally he was in the Wolf Brothers, which eventually expanded and became Hootie and the Blowfish.

You have heard his voice before because it's Darius Rucker from Hootie & The Blowfish. Now he is solo and Country

He was made for country! Love his voice so much. Even my husband, who pretty much hates country music, loves DR's country music.

😂 So funny seeing Jay “discover” a Black Country singer. 😆 Yes Jay, he’s super awesome and he is not new to the scene. Many great hits! We love him.

Colour doesn't matter , if you are White . Anyone else ,it's degrees of disadvantage, marginalisation and discrimination.

The night I met my husband, he sang “I only wanna be with you,” by Hootie to me. It’s been our song for almost 20 years, until he heard this song. Now I get serenaded by both genres of Darius. Great song! “I only wanna be you” is another great song. His voice is amazing! Just sayin’.

I'm from Roanoke so this song has a special place in my heart. And also it's a perfect country song. They play it at the Virginia Tech games and we all go nuts. I simply couldn't trust someone if they didn't like this song.

Fantastic voice! Love his work so much. How fun to see the Duck Dynasty guys too.

Uncle Si just takes it to another LEVEL!!! LOL

"Radio" is one of Ruckers best...absolutely love it.

He has an enormous talent. I LOVED Hootie and the Blowfish but he’s wonderful in any genre.

There are a ton of cameos in this video from the Duck Dynasty guys to Lady Antebellum and the Old Crow Medicine Show band who originally made this song a hit!

Lady Antebellum was actually who was singing backing vocals in the song.

HOO-TAY..and the Blowfish, Yall do know his career started in mainstream rock first right?..Back in the early 90s late 80s, Nobody as of late has been able to pull the music transition this man has...plus he is one of the best song writers period in the aspect of writing hits

This song was started by Bob Dylan and finished by Old Crow Medicine Show. Both are worth your time! Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” makes me hug my kids and tear up...such an amazing vibe!

Motel in Memphis and Big Time in the Jungle are a couple of my favorite OCMS songs. A lot of really powerful songs with interesting melodies from them.

Wagon Wheel was written by and first recorded by The Old Crow Medicine Show. Darius, of Hootie and the Blowfish of the 90's, covered it and had a hit.

Love Darius. He's so unique has a great voice

Technically, a Bob Dylan song--though he only wrote the chorus way back in 1973 and could never figure out the rest so he let another band (Old Crow Medicine Show) finish it around 2005.

Ray Charles was told by his management that if he did a country music album it would ruin his career. Ray said it was the total opposite and sold millions!

Appreciate that he shakes hands with an old Redneck and also with a truck full of hippies. Our country really needs more of this energy right now.

You guys MUST do Daryl Hall(Hall and Oates) with Darius Rucker doing You Lost That Loving Feeling from Live From Daryl's House. It's the best version of that song EVER!!!

Whether it's Old Crow Medicine Show or Darius Rucker doing this song it is near impossible to not sing along with this song. Both do it great. The song just pulls you in.

When you lock yourself into one type of Genre then you rob yourself of Music, period! Nice to see your expanding. I listen to everything, that way I'm never alienated.

You’ve definitely got to do some Hootie and The Blowfish, too! Darius met his bandmates while attending University of South Carolina, and they officially formed in 1986. It’s a pop-folk-rock, anchored in Darius’ voice and too notch musicianship. Darius made the move to country over 10 years ago. BTW, can’t tell from names. My best man at 2nd wedding is named Darius, and he is Hispanic. 😉

It did not take him long to transition from Hootie & The Blowfish, which at the time was considered alternative rock, to doing country music as a solo artist. Hoody & The Blowfish themselves were very successful.

Darius has admitted he grew up listening to country, so this was kind of a home coming. I would love to hear him work with Alison krauss . please try her " when you say nothing at". She has such an ethereal voice.

Rihanna is a great historian about early American music and the presence of African Americans in folk/blues/country.

Listen to Charlie Pride he is so smooth. R.I.P. He voice is so round, mellow and draws you in!

I enjoy country music, don't often select it first. This one, I turn up when I hear it. 🧡

This song has be done by many artists but I believe this is the best ever. The story of how it was written is amazing, this is one great recording.

I love seeing Amber mouth the words rocking back and forth and seeing Jay enjoying the song. Jay, you have come a long way and found out there is a lot of good music from many different genres.

There was a group that played at a Seattle restaurant for many years that would end there night with the whole house singing this song. We had friends from Australia visiting abs we took them there. Even they knew the song and were so happy to be hearing something they knew.

Love Darius Rucker's songs. When I first heard him with Hootie and the Blowfish, I thought he could fit in with the country music genre. Another interesting black country artist is Jimmie Allen.

You don’t have to like country to love this song. Great music is great music, regardless of genre.
