He isn't Hootie. The band name came from 2 guys they knew in college. They nicknamed one guy Hootie and another guy they named the Blowfish because his cheeks puffed out and they said he looked like a blowfish. All 4 members met in college at The University of S.C. in Columbia S.C. . They use to play the local bars and I use to catch them playing in Five Points back in the day. Originally it was just Darius and Mark. The two use to play acoustic sets. After adding Soni on drums and Dean on bass they became Hootie and the Blowfish. I was the perfect age at the time ( 18- 22 ) back when they were still just a hometown band playing locally. When their 1st album hit they shot straight to the top. They use to play a free concert every year in Columbia for the people and the city that supported them when they were starting out.

This song always makes me think of my mom. She battled addiction when I was a kid and she left me with my great-grandparents so she could keep me safe. She weaved in and out for my childhood until I was an adult and then due to a series of events she has become more of a permanent fixture. Even as a kid I understood she was having a hard time. So the lyrics of this song always gets me because I def think of her . She has been sober for over 15 years and I'm so PROUD.

@Melvin Smiley I came back to tell you thank you for this comment . We spent the last 15 years doing so and creating memories and she got to meet her first grandson and spends lots of time with us. 5 months ago , she transitioned unexpectedly. And I have been deep in my grief because I miss her so much. But I am so so happy that we did have our time , we did have our healing and our love for one another. I forgave her so long ago and I'm so happy I understood that and made the space to have her a part of my life. So thank you for this comment because it led me back to thinking about this song and my love for her.

I don't know if he is the most underrated singer. I think many people see him as a 90's music icon who lead a highly popular band in the 90's That isn't nothing by any stretch and they sure aren't seen as one hit wonders either, Hootie and the Blowfish made quite a number of iconic songs that still bring back memories today of that time in people who grew up listening to them in that bands heyday. Hootie and the Blowfish and "Hootie" were big, I mean everyone knew who you were referring to when you spoke of Hootie. I hope even now that he goes by his regular name that he appreciates that he go to be "Hootie" to people, because they loved him as Hootie along with his Blowfish bandmates.

"Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan met in Columbia, South Carolina, in the mid-1980s when they were both freshmen at the University of South Carolina. Bryan, a guitar player, heard Rucker singing in the showers of the dorm they shared and was impressed by his vocal ability. The pair began playing cover tunes as the Wolf Brothers. Eventually they collaborated with bassist Dean Felber, a former high school bandmate of Bryan's, and Brantley Smith, a drummer. In 1986, they adopted the name Hootie & the Blowfish, a conjunction of the nicknames of two of their college friends. The band is routinely featured in articles and polls about badly-named bands. Rucker is often mistaken as being the "Hootie" in the band's name."

I saw an interview where a band member mentioned "11 Million copies? I can't believe that many, did folks break the CDs and have to replace them 3 times?" So so many great songs. Darius and the Blowfish went to school at the University of SC.....they used to play at the small bars around town.......they were singing most of the songs from Cracked Rear View.....then after about a year it took off, and that summer Hootie was the biggest thing in the world. Every song on the album was a top 10 hit. Darius still does a ton of charitable work in the area, and often does free concerts and such.......a really great, down to earth guy.

"Goodbye" was a real tearjerker from Cracked Rear View. I was 13 when it came out. By the time I turned 17, it took on a whole new meaning. When I was a sophomore in high school, I had a huge crush on a senior. My entire existence revolved around her. I haven't heard that song much since . Such an emotional song. I couldn't stop sobbing is why I don't listen to it hardly at all. I never got up the courage to tell her how much I loved her. Every lyric of "Goodbye" ripped me apart and it still does 25 years later.

I took my daughter to see them a long time ago ('94? she was 18) at an outdoor venue in Seattle and they put on a great show. Darius Rucker, the lead singer, is a great guy and stepped out of one of the tour busses, to chat and mingle with us waiting in line to attend the concert. He talked for quite awhile and obliged people by signing autographs and having his picture taken with them. You really need to do the song, 'Drowning', on the 'Cracked Rear View' CD. The crowd roared their approval when they started the opening riff and they (he) got a several minute standing ovation and loud cheers, when the song was over. It's a great song, with a powerful message, you both might be able to relate to. Unfortunately (and sadly), the lyrics still resonate today, maybe even more so. Even though you two are a bit novices on your knowledge of rock, at least you are trying, learning and you are to be commended for your efforts. l enjoy watching you and seeing your reactions, anf thanks for opening the eyes of many younger people like yourselves, who are unaware of the great rock era. Your kids are beautiful!!

Hootie was part of an explosion groups doing beautiful music they didn't look like they'd be doing...Grayson Hugh did "Can't We Talk it Over in Bed, Living Color did Cult of Personality and there were others. It was the late 80s and innovation was everywhere. Hootie was sounding like a white country singer, Living Color sounded like a white heavy metal hair band, and Grayson Hugh were 4 white hippie dudes that sounded like The Temptations were back. It was awesome. No one in the dorm had a TV, but no one even wanted one. The radio was EVERYTHING.
