So fun fact, I think this man made plasma in the woods! When you complete a circuit it creates an electromagnetic field, which likes to travel through conductors but also radiates around them. When he completed the circuit with the gum, he created a magnetic field. The fire then got caught in that field and changed shape and color. I'm sure part of that was the paper's lining, but the shape and burst of color as it seemed to hang there for a split second looked like plasma.

Lol what Nerotic said... thats "prison match" style for sure. Hilariously enough it's also an extremely useful survival tool to know about for those emergency times, or I suppose to show off to friends.

Being an old guy, I keep being impressed all to hell just with the physical strength, stamina and endurance involved. Then there's the knowledge and skill both of bushcraft and of photography, and the upbeat, can-do attitude. Ten thumbs up!

I spent 6 weeks in the woods with only one item, my RV. LOL. TY Xander for another great bit of entertainment.

I've always used full, large pieces of wood I scavenged and fed them into the fire as they burn down. Never as a life saving device but basically because the u re large and as a woman I'm not as strong to saw and saw and saw. I've wondered why You Tube guys always cut it up like their home woodstove requires. Probably cuz it's so easy for them. Anyway, when I see your videos post I'm right on it. Be well. Xander, my wife and I love watching your videos. I especially love your sense of humor and your humility. Too many people want to claim to be experts and know-it-alls and your not one of them. Even though I am ex-military and have been in the outdoors most of my life...I am still learning and have learned some things from you. Some valuable things. You're the man! Last year I taught a survival class and I told everyone that I can make fire by using a stick of gum and my GPS. You can never have too many tricks up your sleeve.

The first time I saw Xander do this was how I found the channel. Awesome to see him testing himself again with the strategy, really drives home that these kinds of fires could save your life in a survival situation.

I love crawling into bed, shutting off the crazy world, family safely asleep, and falling completely impressed into this! Amazing! Thank you!

Since 2022 I’m using your channel as a mind therapy to get out of negative thoughts and it really helped me a lot.😊

There are SO MANY horrible "camping in the woods" videos that cheat their work, you obviously keep it real and I'm totally here for more.

hi xander. I am 26 hailing from the usa, i get a lot of inspiration from your videos. I have connected with nature to help combat feelings of depression/ substance abuse- something i think you have mentioned dealing with to an extent yourself. Anyway i always learn a lot from you whether it be your camera work, knowledge, or just the poop tips and wanted to say thank you for what you do. You inspire me to follow a similar path, and its something i definitely intend to pursue, albeit probably from the comfort of a tent and sleeping bag lol.

Less is more. Another strong tutorial on what you really need in a pinch. Again you continue to solve problems by continuing to use your best tool, your brain. Base log burned up last time, use a wet log this time for the base log. Well done!

Great video Xander. Only one opinion on emergency shelter without sleeping bag and/or shelter. Include a wool blanket as minimum item when ending out in the wilderness without being prepared. It improves "comfort" substansially and increases chance of survival by far. In the old days, a wool blanket was a "must have"!

Xander! A thermostat controls temperature, a thermometer shows you the current temperature. That said I bet you would have liked to turn up the temperature on this trip 👍🏻

Great vidoes, I appreciate the enthiusiasm. I don't think people truly appreciate the work involved to comfortably survive a night like this without shelter. Like the old saying goes, firewood warms you twice, once when you collect it and after when you burn it.

So good to see these obscure tips being spread around! Just so you/everyone is aware; charcoal is a decent abrasive and as such will clean your teeth in a pinch decently well, but over time could erode the enamel; so make sure that you don't just replace all your toothpaste with charcoal to maintain those pearly-whites!

Hi Xander. Well sir, you never cease to amaze. That battery tip is something else. One a side note. Some of the southeastern tribes used a similar way to do the fire, but they took four logs and laid them out like a plus sign, and moved them in as needed., but you having two fires and sleeping in between I've never seen before. Brilliant. Liking the new hand saw. I'll leave you with this. A walk in the woods, among snow laden branches, Alone, Silence rumbles through brush and birch in Winters Sun. Still beauty of the forest, Quiet Majesty, Bull Moos, Bear, need no translation. M. C.. Til next time.

It's probably hard to notch trees with that saw but it would definitely help with the pinching. Otherwise make a wedge to pound in from behind the cut to keep the kerf from closing. Another great video.

I grew up in Toronto Canada, a middle school field trip to a forest farm in Uxbridge Ontario taught me how to light a fire with battery’s and steel wool , we had bring a pot of water to a boil first .. my class won !

another tip i've seen is to carry a pencil sharpener if you cannot find anything to start a fire with so you can use the shavings from the pencil to start one :D
