Something isn't right here mate. The Tony Burke, Labour Government, and the Transport Workers Union Australia have not done what they said they would do.

Well, that was a good rant, and as always, correct. Considering that most drivers are a) imports and b) part time...me, I'm full time Uber and MenuLog. All I want is fair pay, minimum $10 per order and $2.00 per klm, no $4 add order bullshit either, pay what it's worth. No courier is ever going to sign up to the union, how the fuck could you afford it anyway, so if union even thinks they are going to monetise this, they are badly mistaken. Another good post Chris, cheers 🍻

What percentage of the Australian population do delivery driving anyway??? Very small, and none of them are forced to do it, if the workers don't like the job they can leave.

the amount of drivers i see , picking up food orders from restaurants, no bags. Ive seen uber drivers sitting down in the retaurant, while the food bag was sitting on the counter, ready to go, and they just jibber jabba on ther phone. Ive had more than one uber customer tell me they are cutting back ordering coz the food arrives cold and late. Seriously, keeping food hot(or cold) while delivering in a timely mannerIS the job description not a fookin optional extra

As Overseas Student in Australia i 100% agree that temporary residency shouldn’t be allowed to vote for making any change they must be Australian local workers to decide so it will benefit worker. Gigs economy is meant to be side income which help to make extra income not a full time job which you must have to do 60-70hrs in a week.

Uber is gonna become like america here where cost of living causes the market to be saturated as more people become desperate, gig work is only going to get worse.

ever since the bill passed, these apps have been gradually dropping how much they pay. IMHO the minimum an order should pay is $10. there is no reason we should see an offer below that. we need to deduct tax, GST and fuel expenses out of that. I think pay should start at $8.50. then an additional $1 per KM. so $13.50 for 5km. But a 10km order would be paying $18.50, and this rate should also apply to add to routes, regardless of distance. then these bigger package deliveries uber does need about a 50% pay increase. because they never pay enough to make the total round trip worth it. had one today paying $112. sure, that looks good until you realize thats 260km round trip and half of it goes straight to fuel.

when i started doing uber eats a few years ago-still doing it- pay was transperent-, 3 dollar pick up, 2 dollar drop of and 90 cents a kilometer. Now , its a vague' amount of drivers available, road conditions, size of order" . At the very least the unions could have pushed for pay transparency and a minimum dollar offer amount based on at least 1.20 per kilometer Ive lost respect for the unions, dont trust loony labor 7 thier ideological push to unsustainable immigration and the mismanaged, rushed and costly push to renewables-we are all going to be paying alot more for energy in the future . End of Rant. sorry, it got off subject

I would argue the reason nothing has been done yet is there would be these companies would be behind the scenes arguing their case, as I doubt DD or UE want to pay people a reasonable amount, they have, even before this, an incentive to hire as many drivers as possible, as it depreciates the value of the Labour, and allows them to pay less and less. it would also weaken the Union, not strengthen them. If you have 100 workers, and 50 are in a union, strike action would be impactful, but if you them employee another 100 people, and only 10 of those join a Union, and repeat, over and over again, until non unionised workers saturate the workforce, you will end up with a massive disparity, and there will be no room for Unionised negotiations. And this would also incentivise non Australian workers being not only hired, but treated with more leniency as they would not typically yet know Australia's Labour laws and Union rights. The flooding of workers only helps the Apps, it doesn't help the Unions, it doesn't help anyone but the corporation. Not to mention these are huge bureaucratic processes, even if the LNP or Greens did the same thing, I would expect it to take at least a year from passing for changes to start to come through, longer if the Union is weak. Well with the Greens they would force something without thinking and watch it burn for "progress".... wait, was that Bias? As for these drivers who testified, so what if they're not citizens? And I mean that with sincerity, so what? If they have work Visas, and pay their taxes, they have a right to a level of representation, and if asked to participate, as taxpayers, they have the right to do so. You also inferred that they got citizenship as a reward, although I highly doubt that, anything is possible, if you can prove that is the case, that would make me angry. And as a friendly PSA, unless you've aged marvellously, you're not a 70 year old boomer, it is the Labor Party not Labour Party. ( That's said in Jest btw )

I still have my 1991 TWU badge to remind me how the union is only interested in Union dews. They do fuk all for the average driver. And also in their bylaws in 1991 they didn’t represent owners drivers which I was. To gain access to some sites I had to be in the union . Thanks for the video I enjoy your hard work.

@davidwarren78 the Labor party deliberated over the course of a decade or so at the turn of the century, between 'o' and 'ou' but ultimately settled on the americanised because it was seen as more modern and seperate from the uk, also it could be branded and more easily distinguished from the lab'ou'r unions etc of the time History, get on it.

Hey Chris. What are your thoughts on Woolworths making the options for their orders to deliver groceries for 2 customers in one order? I haven’t got enough room in my car for some of these 2 for 1 orders. It seems like a way for them to pay us less for twice the work.

  • @chrisbooy

I havent had issues on Uber doing Woolworths pick ups, but honest cards on the table, Ive tried 3 on Doordash and all 3 times groceries weren't ready. All 3 times Ive gone in to talk to staff to double check they know Im here and they said "Im sure the system lets the guys out the back know".... and all 3 times Ive unassigned and left after 10 mins. I decline them currently. Could just be the stores ive used, but Ill cycle back in a month or 2 and give them another try to see if theyve improved.

Thanks mate. Also, have you heard of any reports of glitches in the orders being assigned system. Last night I picked up an item at a brodburger. I arrived 8 minutes after I accepted (so I arrived at 18:26), they said they’d been waiting 20 minutes (but I started being available at 18:16) so the boss said he has to make a new one that was fresh. Then after the delivery was done the app says I arrived at the store at 18:39. So I got a contract violation. That’s the last time I’m accepting a delivery for that restaurant.

The a union fees are proportional to income. Most gig workers would have a very low union fee and for drivers it’s definitely worth getting especially for the insurance.

To be fair, you may have jumped the gun a little. The changes with respect to employee-like workers are expected to come into force on a date to be fixed by Proclamation, no later than 26 August 2024. I’m not going to hold my breath though!
