Christine here from The Bucket Garden, NZ. I totally understand what you are going through, my summer season was a complete nightmare due to so many backyard gardeners selling at below cost. I have had to pivot my business, which will hopefully show the fruits of my labour coming into spring. NZ is struggling, cost of living, recession, new government. It’s all playing its part. I thank you for your honesty and enjoy your videos. I love that you’re just so down to earth. Kia Kaha (stay strong)

Oh I love how you said Kia Kaha! Thankyou! Im sorry your season was horrible :( Its so hard to compete and most customers just don't understand what's going on they just want cheap (especially now). Really tricky to navigate being undercut to the point it affects your business. I hope the pivot goes well!

Onwards and upwards. I’m still going to plan for flowers this coming season but also growing the specialist flowers as seedlings to sell to those that are selling flowers. I also have my stepdaughter’s wedding to plan for as she is getting married in my garden, 2 years of planning ahead but I’m going to enjoy the process.

Thank you for your honesty. I started off with a Facebook page 3yrs ago which I still use, selling bouquets. The amount of scammers really started getting to me. I then had the idea of retirement villages etc, so contacted all the ones within half hour drive. I now do regular workshops with them. Charge for flowers, time and petrol. Using dried at the moment until my fresh start blooming in spring. You spoke of joy... The joy I see on the faces of the elderly when they make their own creations is truely beautiful. I'm now venturing more along that path. Regarding veges.... I am hopeless, so if you started making videos about growing own veg, I'm up for it ❤️. Regarding HRT... It literally saved my life and sanity.. Wish I had started on it earlier. Worth a try x

Thank you so much for your honesty, Phaedra. I can’t tell you how much I can relate about the business side of things. Wow it’s been hard. I know we’re not very established but this last year I definitely noticed sales dropping. Diversifying income has been so important (including KZread) and now we’re planning on growing more food this year too. That being said, we definitely couldn’t live without Scott’s income right now. I think you have so much value and information to share on your YT channel, and can absolutely see it growing immensely to support new growers. Have you thought about offering online workshops, courses or seminars to your audience? Might be another way to share your knowledge at a more in depth way that would be so useful to others 🥰 Thanks again for sharing and wishing you all the best for the next season!

Just watched the video and you are just amazing Phaedra! Like everyone else has said - love your complete honesty - please don't change! I get so tired of watching the videos where everything grows perfectly, etc. That is not the case on my flower farm for sure!! Failures happen!! I will tell you I'm in my 3rd year - a very small flower farm (3/4 acre) in a very small rural town in the USA. I have a flower stand here at my house that my husband built where I sell pint and quart jars filled with flowers (both mine and supplemental greenery and things I don't have room to grow). I keep my price way down by doing the small jars ($8 and $15 each). My goal like yours is to spread joy - so keeping my cost low I encourage people to buy an extra for someone who is hurting and they do!! I also donate any leftover jars to our local Cancer Clinic for staff and patients receiving chemotherapy as I was in their shoes last year receiving treatment for Lymphoma. I sell on average 60 jars each weekend and most weekends I sell out! I am fortunate that my husband does have a steady job (though not high paying) - and we live modestly so I am able to have the flower farm as my retirement job with my social security income. We lost money the first two years building infrastructure and with cancer last year I had to hire someone which ate any profit. BUT, we are double in sales this year over last! Our town is avg/poor in nature (being rural) but people totally support local small businesses like mine and the local veggie stands! I had the absolute best comment on one of my posts last week - a customer wrote "This is the JOY of Oconee County"! And that is why I do this! If you want to see the flower stand or how my jars look - you can go to Facebook and put in Confetti Flower Farm and you will see The Little Yellow Flower Stand! You won't see me - I never post pics of me - it's all about the flowers, always has been and always will be! And regarding the earrings - how about actually putting dried flowers in them - not just photos - it's huge here in the states (ck ETSY). You have such beautiful flowers and that might be another income stream - just a thought! Also, I am a book cover photographer - and I sell through Self Pub Book Covers online - maybe ck that out as an additional income stream! And for the menopause, I made it through wonderfully taking Maca Root from Peru! It's amazing! Bless you dear Phaedra - you will find your purpose!

@@phaedragardeness Thank you for always being real Phaedra! When I was going through chemo last year, you were the only one I watched because of your sweet attitude! I literally waited for your posts to come out so I could just relax and enjoy them and not think about how awful I felt - they gave me hope and the encouragement to go on and keep my little farm alive for when I was healed. Yes, I am in total remission from both Lymphoma and Colon cancers - thank GOD! Thanks for cking out my page too - I just love what I do here and my community is so supportive!! I received the 12 buckets of the blue hydrangeas from friends and neighbors - can you believe that!! I don't like the photos on my page - they are just iphone shots (no time to shoot good pics!) - my book cover photography is pretty decent - I have over 125 book covers published and some by famous authors like Danielle Steele, John Hart and Nicholas Sparks .... that might be something you want to think about with your talent!! Thanks for writing to me - I just love you and your sweet family!! hugs - tina

I’m also a 5th year flower farmer located in Los Angeles, CA and I compete with the LA flower market which is the largest in the continental United States. It’s always slow this time of year here in the states as people are on vacation. The cost of living is outrageous so no one has time or money for flowers right now. I’m still not giving up. Ugh. I'm so sorry your flower business isn't thriving. I live in Upstate New York in the US and I was nodding as you talked about groceries, utilities and everything else that is essential being so expensive. I work full time so my flower business is just a side job that I've done for a few years. I sell at a farmers market. I've definitely noticed a decline in the sales of fresh flowers. I press or dry whatever doesn't sell. My framed pressed flowers seem to sell better than the fresh flowers. People don't mind buying a gift for someone else but they've stopped buying weekly flowers for themselves. That's my theory. I'm starting to pivot towards focusing on growing only those flowers that press or dry well. For next season I may give up on fresh flowers all together and switch to craft and art festivals instead of the Farmers Market. Hopefully I can find a different type of customer there that has a bit of spending money. I wish you luck on your new path. It sounds like you're going through what some call a midlife crisis but I call it an evaluation. When you look at where you are compared to where you wanted to be. It's good to redefine goals and figure out what you really want out of life.

A fantastic honest video. Thank you for sharing. I'm a year 2 NZ flower farmer so very overwhelmed but it is my joy and I just know I have to do this. NZ is going through the same issues. No one has any spare money for flowers 😞. I'm about 10 years older and all the big questions you discuss - Why, what am I doing etc etc. are all so healthy to go over. Here's what I think as a 53 year old. If you need income pick up a part time job in something you can stand. Garden centre etc. New people, new connections! Then work part time on your flowers and veg and keep on with youtube. Push on the giving idea, it will fill your life with more love. Get onto HRT!!! I've been on it for 2 years and it's been great. Feeling very level and driven. Still a little tired at times but the symptoms are much less. Create more income from part time work and youtube. Enjoy flowers for the utter Joy they give you. It's less about recession and more about the widening of the wealth gap. The USA is not in a recession but people are constantly referring to the 'tough economy'. The economy is doing ok. The rich are getting richer as the rest of us are being distracted by the shiny objects being thrown around. Whether the economy is in trouble or not, if people believe it's bad, then they are less likely to spend. That being said, the US flower industry is worth over 6 billion dollars and not shrinking - so someone is making some good money (back to my earlier point).

its the same here in NZ. We are cattle farmers and have seen the cost of living affect us too here on farm. Agriculture interest rates are higher than residential so we are seeing interest rates from 7-12%. The price of fuel, fertiliser, animal health, stock feed etc has all gone up yet we can not sell our cattle for more than what they were selling for years ago. I saw an article here in NZ that said something like the supermarkets here make 4cents profit for every dollar sold and that something like 68 cents went to suppliers and 28 cents were for the supermarkets costs therefore leaving them with 4 cents profit. However in order for them to make sure they make their 4 cents they just put the prices up. Suppliers have to compete because the supermarkets just going to buy from the cheapest supplier. People wonder why meat costs so much but i can assure you the farmers aren't seeing any of the money. Ive noticed many shops closing down. Ive even heard of shop owners being abused by other shop owners (e.g a boutique store where both shops may sell the same brand) because one shop has decided to put something on sale and the other shop cannot afford to do that. Its sad to see how people cannot afford the basics. I dont know when it will get better over here. I dont have much advice. I follow some other flower farmers here in NZ. Some sell Seed, some also sell prints of photos of their flowers, i remember when i was at highschool we use to have rose day where everyone could anonymously send someone else roses and i think at the time maybe they were $2 each and the florist would bring them all to the school office and certain kids would organise them and deliver them to the classrooms. The local florist use to cream it on those days. I wonder if something similar could be done at a school near you obviously at a reasonable price that made sense for you? all of the kids used to love it! Could you also look at doing in person workshops? Floral arranging or workshops on how to flower farm? We have a flower farmer near by that has done something similar and had great success - follow @handsinthedirt_ on instagram. Also what about selling seedlings? plant sales/tuber/bulb sales. It seems to be more popular these days for everyone to start getting into gardening and growing their own. I know i have with dahlias and the price of dahlias here in NZ are ridiculous. One piece of advice ive learnt with farming with the ever changing prices and weather is that a decision made early is a small decision. If you leave making a decision to later on it can end up being a very large decision. E.g theres a drought forecasted sell your cattle early before you run out of feed and every other farmer tries to sell theirs or your struggling financially - ask for help or make the desicion to say go back to work off farm rather then say leaving it til later and the decision having to be wether you actually sell the farm. Im sure this could relate to flower farming also. A decision made early has the greatest impact. :)

I imagined the farmers are getting the worst deal out of all of this. Its awful because its going to push farmers out of business then we will have even less variety and less quality meats. Everything is so expensive here on Vancouver Island. The groceries stores here are a pure monopoly, which is the same for you it sounds like. Our house insurance has sure jumped this year too. Does Australia have property tax? Here, buying locally grown veggies and fruits is way too much. Another place I’ve really been seeing increases is at the nurseries. Flowers are so expensive to buy now to grow in my yard. An idea I always think when I see your yard and your stunning trees, is why don’t you become a wedding venue? It’s a big change, but it may be another idea where you can have flowers, AND make money as a venue.

I think that in every challenge there is opportunity- it will come to you... Your very smart-enthusiastic and you got this! I started a Gift Basket business in 2000...after failing 2x's prior...I knew I had a good product but I was in the country and could not get people in my town to buy from me. They thought they were pretty and nice but no buyers...to be honest the first time they were pretty pathetic but the second time I tried they were spot on...after I dissolved the business- maybe 2 years later I had a real estate friend ask me if I still did "those baskets." I told her no but I still had my supplies, how could I help? She had all the gadgets- all the promo stuff they acquire (a whole closet full!!) She asked me if I could do anything with what she had. It intrigued my creative side so I said I'd give it a shot and I told her I'd do it for free. I just wanted to see what I could creatively do... I took a Frisbee and turned it upside down and built a gift basket from that and a few other things she had. I added a few crackers, cookies and a fabulous bow on top...SHE LOVED IT! I LOVED IT...and she asked if I could do all of her gift closings. She worked in a city almost 60 miles from where we lived, but this lead to other real estate agents reaching out, then mortgage brokers, then insurance companies, then title companies, then I started targeting Money Management Brokers and the thing just grew...until I sold it in 2009... People are still going to want and need gifts...if you want to service the public then you just need to figure out a way to make that work...or maybe think outside the box...throw all your preestablished and set ways of thinking about your business out the window...we are in a global recession...and yes, people are hurting... Phaedra, there will always be weddings, birthdays and funerals... small businesses just like yours will be looking for new ways to market....is there new construction in your area? Maybe nursery plants-perennial plants might be the way to bridge you thru this recession...are there resorts or hotels in the area- maybe floral sprays to these upscale businesses is the way to go... I know you had the PETROL (I think that is what you called it) is there a way to re-work that outlet? Keep trying-keep shooting the video's-keep us in the loop...take us along as you try to figure this out...and you will figure it out...I have no doubt...but you have to make money to keep your family afloat during this time... Another thought I had about the multiple streams of income...dried flowers- dehydrated petals for weddings-use the dried flowers for jewelry-wax scents-sachets-and I'm sure there are ideas I'm not even thinking about. How can you sell an "experience" at your farm? Is that doable? Keep thinking outside the box! You got this... Now, I just need to figure out how to message you about perimenopause....girl...lol

We've been there, and admitting defeat can be gut wrenching, embarrassing and just flat out sad....but there is always HOPE!! Let me say that you have a great ability to teach, and I think that could be something to think about, coupled with your arty skills and love of all things pretty. One thing I will say, and you would already know this.... when the economy is down, people are looking for affordable options and sometimes we just have to restructure what we do so that it becomes affordable...then when the economy is prosperous again, you can go back to your original business model. I couldn’t agree more. As the economy struggles sometimes you have to see it as a time to rest and recover and pivot temporarily. Ive watched many YT accounts in the United States go deep into creating more content as they have had their incomes drastically reduced and they aren’t offering subscriptions they are just producing more online content that people struggling everywhere in the world are trying to teach themselves and are learning it through watching YT videos. My understanding of people who use YT to create income is to increase their content and get more subscribers and more people interacting with their platform and Phaedra has a natural gift of not sounding annoying (some YT Ive stopped watching due to their voices or their content just becoming really boring to watch….brutal but honest) Phaedra has a lot to offer that people would engage with during this journey she is embarking on and I will definitely stay engaged as I enjoy her content. My own theory is just keep smiling and sharing wisdom and wisdom comes with age :)

@@phaedragardeness I know a little something about spare time now, something I hadn’t had for some 16 years while I had the Mogo Lolly Shop. Even after working 70-80 hour weeks, losing everything inside and outside of my business to the bushfires I still pushed myself to get my doors back open while helping many families that had lost everything, plus trying to navigate insurance companies for my business losses and the lose we had at home. I pushed my body to the brink of collapse and when my Canberra landlord decided that he wanted his building to move his own business into in Mogo I was angry that all of my hard work would result in nothing as there was no other building for me to relocate to due to the devastation of the bushfire. My husband said I needed a break and we had been trying to repair our land after the bushfires but as he worked full time as a store manager and I worked so many hours we did what we could. Financially I didn’t need to work for a little while but decided recently that soon I may become known as the crazy flower lady so I took on 10 hours a week which I thought would be perfect but Im soon realising that I can’t work with companies that are disorganised fools….and they are a big company but have just got no idea how to schedule etc. My husband said to me the other day that I need to contact these people and tell them that Im quitting but I am one of those people who doesn’t like quitting things. I have to make a decision as in only a few short weeks I will begin the process of starting our seeds and I know in my heart that I am happier and healthier than I have been for a few years by the decisions that were made for me rather than the ones I would’ve chosen for myself. Our bees will be here in just a few short months, Im still building their native feeding garden at the moment and my husband has finally started working 4 days a week rather than 6 so that means we are both here repairing and caring for our land and building the dream I had to walk away from 20 years ago when my first husband and I divorced and I had to close down my flower and cattle breeding business. Take this time to not see anything as failure just see it as someone else forcing your body to recover and deal with the beginnings of menopause. Take flowers and surplus vegetables to your local market and create YT content from the many things you’ve done. Don’t beat yourself up, that is something I had to say to myself after having to close my Lolly shop, we get one go at this life there’s no second chances. Sending a kiss for each cheek and a hug….You’ve got this 🥰

I don't think I need to add a comment, the ones I have read here are everything I would have said. Enjoy your rest, it's winter! If it's a recession yes the rest may be a bit longer but not forever, so you are on the right track to finding your joy in whatever your next sideline/hobby turns out to be. I have been looking up the meaning of the winter solstice (which we just had) and found this. "The symbolism of the Winter Solstice, with its longest night and the promise of increasing daylight, can be a powerful metaphor for hope, renewal, and the triumph of light over darkness." So too, will your flowers in your garden start waking up now that the days are getting longer and your orders may start coming back in. Regarding your HRT idea, have you looked at natural therapies such as "Happy Healthy You", founded by Lisa Curry Kenny? She also has a book you can get at Big W. Love everything you put out on this channel and yes your photography and videography is amazing! x

@@phaedragardeness Maybe put your excess veg out the front in a stall and let people purchase who may not be looking for a subscription. A family that I know grow the vegetables that go into Canberra every week to be delivered as part of a Canberra vegetable box subscription. As the group independently couldn’t grow everything that was needed, they buy from other small farms to make up their subscription boxes every week. Or take your extra and do the markets every weekend and as the flowers will still bloom take some with you and sell them a little cheaper. I understand and appreciate the gift box vegetable concept but my concern for you is that if people aren’t buying flowers for themselves or to gift why would they gift vegetables.

I sell bouquets at two farmer's markets in my area. One is a rural town and the other is in a more upscale neighborhood. I'm noticing that there are fewer people purchasing fresh flowers and opting to purchase produce and food products instead. Last year at the upscale market the flowers sold out. Not this year. I also noticed an increase in buyers using cash instead of their cards. I don't know what that means other than interest rates are higher and people's cards might be maxed out or saved for important items instead of impulse buys. I love your idea about sharing. When I lived in the suburbs not one of my neighbors knew how to grow veggies. They all said they couldn't keep anything alive. I get it, some people don't like to garden. But if things continue like they are, everyone should be able to grow at least tomatoes. Personally, I think tomatoes are the gateway drug to gardening veggies. People need to learn the basics. Sun, water, nutrients, when to plant when to harvest. Out in the country more people have veggie gardens. But perhaps you could foster community. What if everyone grew different things and then shared. Teach kids to grow veggies and flowers. Can you have workshops on your farm?

Taking stock and learning how to pivot, supplement, and keep moving towards something that you love (ie that doesn't feel like work)...some growers make enough money with their video alone, some make money filming other content makers in their gardens...while some open shops and/or website. People ALWAYS need food - and you do have a farm - and if you have a greenhouse you're ahead of the game during winter. Community outreach and encouraging to buy local (ie.CSAs and farmstands etc.)...flowers ARE a luxury item, but you can sell plant starts. Don't give up, don't give in - be a solution and don't get bogged in the mire - find your mission - teach people edible landscaping that combines food and flowers...donate your excess to community centers/churches etc. You will find your purpose...just live in an abundance mentality...and pray (a much overlooked answer)

Things are getting tough though and times are looking bleak for so many. We are in the midst of a housing crisis here, with many families homeless and living in their cars or couch surfing. I love the idea of giving and am part of the Grow Free community on fb with the motto "take what you need, give what you can". Back when I was floundering, I asked everyone for advice except The One who knew best. I wish I had known then what I know today. Why wouldn't I ask The One who made me and established my purpose in the first place? I look at it now as a reason I am still here - that is to learn and grow as He has ordained. I love spaces like this where people realize how much they are not alone. Hopefully some fresh ideas get borne too! I wouldn't be surprised if your florist business can pop its head up again in the future. Curious, do you think your location (less populated) has something to do with fewer sales? I'm not a flower seller but have been experiencing the pinch recently while doing necessary house renovations and repairs, those costs have gone up massively, like doubled or probably more. I noticed flower costs went up a lot too (in the past what, 10 yrs?). I wonder if people are growing their own flowers more?? Anyhow for the time being it's an amazing position to be in to have land, fertile soil and an operational farm along with at least one good job and family happiness. Love those ideas for giving to people who need some love from the community! Those kinds of endeavors don't pay good wages but who know what good may come from it 💕

I’m a luckier person because I’m on my own since loosing my husband and my children have grown and left but my utilities are high and I still struggle to pay them. My loving husband made sure that I was taken care of financially thank god for that. Also there is so much more pressure on shop fronts that I believe opportunities will continue to present for the small business with less overhead. I’m thinking people still need / want special event flowers, perhaps offering buckets of flowers for people to arrange themselves may be another option. At this time I do not have to return to work, but with things also being very expensive here (housing and food are outrageous) and our upcoming election, (which is it's own sort of craziness) I am sure I will have to in a few months. I may also have to "rethink" my farm strategy depending on the outcome of the election and economy (really, it's crazy). Maybe you can think of a "buy one donate one" for your flowers and veggies. Hi, so first of all I love your heart for wanting to serve… you’re obviously hearing from God in asking yourselves what’s the purpose or mission and wanting to please The Lord. In America there’s a KZread channel called Roots n Refuge (not sure if you’ve heard of it or even watch it) anyways she’s very popular and has approximately 600,00 followers. She grows vegetables but doesn’t sell them she just shares her family’s journey and teaches. When she first started out she only put up a few videos sporadically (I want to say for the first year or so) then she made a decision to make her channel a full time job meaning she made videos a couple times a week or more and when she did that her channel took off and of course making more money. I think you have that talent!Your funny and you can teach have a lovely family so Just make videos, I think you can make a great living. God Bless and will keep your family in prayer😊🙏

Yes! New ideas and adventures but keep it going so you can pivot back into flowers when the economy picks up. See if you can register as a charity…

Im wondering if I close down the florist shop for the rest of winter to give myself the thinking space and open up again in Spring... see how things are then?

Hi I’m sorry to hear your business is struggling. It’s difficult everywhere atm. I don’t think we are speaking enough about these difficulties. Could you grow baskets of vegetables for clients.? Just like you struggle they might appreciate veg rather than flowers.

Have you considered re-opening your roadside stand sales channel? In addition to your online sales channel? I think it targets a different customer. On your website you can have an option for a donation bouquet. The economy is challenging here in the US too. Had an irrigation contractor here to make a repair and he said it was very slow for him too.

Hello! Thankyou for your ideas! I really think the roadside sales is over. Its extremely challenging with all the weather (for us, we got sick of being out in the elements all the time) and many of those customers were buying flowers for themselves, which people just aren't doing anymore. We will still do it for Valentines and Mothers Day though!

Hi I'm in Gippsland and I understand what you're going through I'm a florist living on property I also had the idea of growing my own but I don't believe that this is a good time at the moment. I was wondering what if we create groups of florists that work together.

Hello! It's definitely worth starting to grow your own now! You'll learn so much from it and it will cut down your flower costs in the warmer seasons. If you already have customers and orders coming in, it's a great idea to grow some of your own flowers!!

Increasingly difficult times it seems right across the world....and certainly personally we all will struggle at times in life...Phaedra❤,.... theres many things one could say, but who really knows the plans for our lives and how long we are here for but our Creator, Himself!? A miriad of scriptures come to mind but ponder on...' seek first the kingdom of God , and all these ( all your needs) will be added unto you'....what does it mean? Who formed us Psalm 139? And whats our purpose and where are we going when life here ends? All these questions cover much of what you mentioned, ..... Seek the Lord, His wisdom is beyond measure. He will lead you when you seek Him with all your heart and soul🙏🏼

What if you had a bridle registry where people could gift a part of the brides flowers. Like you could gift a table centerpiece. Menopause is brutal and definitely affects your emotions. I hope whatever you do is successful and love your idea about charity. Here in the US there are plenty of farms that have corporations sponsor flowers to nursing homes etc. your KZread is always uplifting

😢 l was a little shocked & sad to hear all that because it seemed to me that you were going really well now. I know the economy is terrible, but could this lull just be temporary, especially being winter & the fact that you have been away. I too, am really angry at supermarkets & the way they treat growers. It's totally disgusting. I worry that before long all our fruit & veg will have to be imported ......so much for supermarkets going on about proudly Australian grown etc, while in the meantime, they are rapidly putting Australian farmers out of business. I'm not sure what business to pivot too. I am lucky in that l am retired, but l did spend last winter making some crafts to sell at a local market &, while l enjoyed it, it was quite labour intensive & l hardly sold any of it. For me, selling flowers has been much more profitable. Not enough to sustain a living though, but l don't really need to & l wasn't trying to. Really hope things pick up for you.❤
