No more genocide in Gaza. Ceasefire now! w/Medea Benjamin | The Chris Hedges Report

Israel's devastating campaign of collective punishment against the people of Gaza has aroused international condemnation and popular mobilization in support of a ceasefire and an end to Israeli Apartheid. This movement has also spread to the US, where over a hundred thousand people flocked to Washington DC on Nov. 4 for the largest pro-Palestine march in US history. Support for a ceasefire in Gaza is widespread among the US public-with more than half of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike in favor of such a measure, according to Data for Progress. Yet the federal government continues to largely ignore calls for a ceasefire and an end to US aid to Israel, with only a minority of House Democrats willing to back a resolution for a ceasefire. Medea Benjamin of Code Pink, a key organization in the current Palestine solidarity movement, joins The Chris Hedges Report to explain what the movement is demanding from leaders in Washington to stop Israel's genocide of Palestinians.
Editor's note: The death toll in Gaza from Israel's bombardment campaign has now exceeded 10,000-including over 4,000 children. On Nov. 9, the White House announced Israel would observe a daily four-hour pause in bombing to allow Palestinian civilians to flee from northern Gaza. The Biden Administration continues to resist calls for a full ceasefire.

The "anti war" wing of the democratic party doesn't exist because the democratic party *itself* doesn't exist. We have two right wing parties in the US. An ultra far right fascist party, and a more moderate right wing party. Both *100%* subordinated to wealth & power. The only question remaining is what proportion of that wealth & power is dedicated to Israeli interests.

Most Europeans consider Americans to be stupid because we are easily manipulated and brainwashed and "settle" for being taken advantage of by corporations and big pharma. If you are a working class woman in the USA you would live better and have more rights living in any Scandinavian country, Germany, Iceland and France than you would have here. Eighty five years ago today was the first incident in Germany that started the Nazi genocide of the Jews, Nazis went to their places of worship, houses and businesses and burned or destroyed them. Eighty five years to the day. Now on this day we see that the victims have become the victimizer in the worse way. Their victimization has not softened their hearts but have only caused them to become oppressors of another people. If you consider the number of children that have been slaughtered in Gaza and scale that to the American population , then it's 230,000 American children that would have been killed. Let that sink in.

What struck me in particular apart from the huge no of Jews calling for "Ceasefire Now and Not in our Name placards, were three elderly Jewish Women, who they or there family had exsperienced the "Holocaust ", personally, and were at the massive sit in ,in Central Station, and were willing to be arrested, (one of them complained because the police officer wouldn't arrest her, "because i have a cane") but she insisted and the officer obliged, very gently helping the lady too her feet. That made me weep. I'm a great-grandmother and was an English "war /child. I pray everyday for "Ceasefire Now 🙏🌿🌺

Unfortunately peaceful means have absolutely no sway with the Dark Side, who are inherently evil and will NEVER EVER give up their horrific destructive ways. All of life has duality, an opposite, and evil is real. They took out MLK after all, and the other reason JFK was taken out is because he was becoming a peacenik Peaceful means do, though, straighten out ordinary people who've been misled into bad attitudes such as the false heroism culture in America for/of those who participate in your military. There are great videos on YT of some of your veterans throwing away their medals and making their statements as to why. I hope this continues to be a great awakening for Americans, because your governments couldn't have been the incredible tyrants they've been without all the American citizens who were willing to kill people for them. I don't know if America has EVER been involved in a just war.

They wanted blood 🩸 now it’s flowing everywhere. There’s going to be more and it could well be yours and mine . No country has welcomed different cultures and beliefs like the UK. Today these different cultures will disrespect a very sacred memorial in our country. They’re about to erode the goodwill and tolerance our country has shown to them. To have to guard memorials to young men who gave their lives for the freedom that they benefit from is not acceptable.

Estimates of the total number of deaths in the Syrian Civil War, by opposition activist groups, vary between 503,064 and about 613,407 as of March 2023. Why do you think there were so much less protests about this?

The Syrian war was not televised in real time and not that widely viraled in the internet. It started perhaps near 2011 and more than 10 years. In the Israeli Hamas war it's already more than 10000 deaths in approximately ONLY one month and about half are children. Even the Israeli army estimated the death to be 20000. Other than killing by bombing, they can also be killed by spread of disease, injury, lack of medical supplies , die from starvation and thirst. So are you going to do nothing and wait till one year where more 100000 may die?

You know, that is a great question, I was actually in Prague, Czhec Republic in December 2012, speaking with the Syrian owner of a hostel I was staying in, and at that time, the deaths were still only approximately 20,000, but it was galling to me even then what was happening in Syria. I engaged in dialogue with the Syrian gentleman about my shock about the deaths occurring in his country, and he really didn't have a solution to the situation as it was Western powers attempting to oust Bashar using "groups like HAMAS" that the U.S. funded, armed, etc. but "don't" consider terrorists when the US is attempting to use them to ouster a democratically elected leader such as Bashar. The staging ground in Syria also had Russia, which made it akin to the 1980s conflict in Afghanistan wherein the US FUNDED the Taliban to try to use as a proxy war against Russia, the same occurred in Syria, so I believe the reason you didn't have similar outrage, are multi-pronged reasons, but it did take me aback 11 years ago when the Syrian gentleman wasn't as shocked and outraged as myself about all the deaths even at that time, which were only a fraction of what eventually was akin to colossal loss of life in the hundreds of thousands.

When you say "opposition" groups, although SOME may have been authentic, MANY were extremist groups aligned with those such as ISIS, Al Qaeda, who were funded and supported by the US because they wanted Bashar gone, wanted to eliminate Russia's influence, and anytime the US is involved in proxy wars, it is very muddled in regard to who's who, the ONLY guarantee such as in Afghanistan, Ukraine, Iraq, North and South Korea, Vietnam is that millions of innocent men, women, and children will die, and the US could give two fucks as long as their geopolitical interests are met. The US is the true purveyor of terror, violence, and evil in the world.

Makes me sick. It just goes to show you America, despite all its talk of being a nation that looks back on the colonization and genocide of my ancestors, hasn’t changed at all. They care not. And the Americans that cheer this on with such pride for America, how does it feel knowing your nation serves another?

Ofcourse US is. More than a part. We fund this. During south Africas struggle USA and Israel were on the side of the oppressors. I laugh every time I hear American politicians brag that the USA is a democracy. Were a plutocracy. Most Americans don't even know where their tax dollars are going. They think it's going to welfare mothers.

These aren't my words, but the words of Benjamin Y. According to Norman Finkelstein. Gazza, 25 miles long by 15 miles wide. The tightest slice of land mass. That consist of a multitude of refugee's some where in the million range. 50 percent children. A 50 percent unemployment rate. 60 percent, unemployed teen population. Isolated. No one can go in or come out. The population is land locked on the southeast and southwest and by the ocean to the north. Its utilities are controlled water, food, and fuel. It's a Concentration Camp. Full stop. And, the U S knows it.....

I imagine some americans who bought into the Obama "Hope and Change" campaign (or were convinced ) are having a hard time discovering the true values of Democrats. Discovering they've been supporting right-wing politics will have an interesting ripple effect, especially because older white americans are listened to more and receive more privilege to voice and platform. I'm interested to see the emotional periods or how older people choose to deal with these changes (if at all, I'm sure a large portion will be fed consumer information that perfectly insulates them if they look for it). If they will run to get diagnosed by a professional, thinking "they" are the problem, instead of facing the truth, or if drug and alcohol rates continue to climb, for instance. Edited for grammar/clarity
