    Yeah. A lot of people tend to forget that animals mimicking the appearance of plants is not an uncommon occurrence. The most well known examples being insects such as orchid mantises *(or mantises in general),* katydids, and stick bugs. Heck, even reptiles and amphibians have gotten in on it like the leafy-tailed gecko or the Vietnamese mossy frog.

    @@Yipper64 there's also a kind of parasitic fungus that reproduces by controlling the bugs that they grow on in order to make them go to the perfect spot to release spores. Once they go to said spot, the bug dies and a mushroom grows on its head while spores are released. Or at least it's what I remember from a documentary. And that's why it isn't just in fantasy. It'd be absolutely terrifying if bugs weren't the only victims.

    @@Headless_Toil2418 The parasitic fungus in question is Cordyceps. They control an insect's brain and forces it to climb to the highest point it can, at which point it consumes and replaces the host's body tissue to grow higher. iirc we recently discovered specimens of an extinct cordyceps ancestor that sprouted from the other end of the host. Outside of being objectively horrifying, it's known for its use as pest control and naturopathic medicine, and the game The Last of Us centers around the idea of Cordyceps parasitizing non-insect hosts.

    As a fan of the three theorist channels, this is a REALLY good debunk. I honestly completely forgot that toads, piranha plants, and other mario characters had bones. I thought this was gonna be one of those videos where the person speaking is just ranting about Mat and his team and how they always get everything wrong, but you actually went out of your way to research even more and make a respectful and simple video! Good job.

    Eh... I'm not convinced on the bone thing. Bones are just a dense material that shows up on x-rays because the particles struggle to penetrate them. Water shows up in a similar way so they could just be filled with water as far as we know. Though since they arent immobile plants/fungus it would make sense they form a dense internal skeleton to help with movement unlike most plants/mushrooms that have more of an external structure, same way we have internal skeletons while anything related to insects has an external one. To be honest the shading on the skeleton is the fishiest thing... But then this is using an electric shock not x-rays particles and special recording equipment, and I'm not even sure if that should light up bones unless the bones are highly conductive.

He once made the bold claim that even Nintendo doesn't know whether Inklings are humans or squids, is completely willing to ignore canon evidence against him and statements to the contrary from people who actually made the games he's talking about, and believes the official Zelda timeline is BS because it doesn't line up with what he got his fans parroting about Link being dead in Majora's Mask.

    Thank you very much. In the clip that’s played in the Game Theory video alone it’s clear that Miyamoto his view of things doesn’t align with what MatPat’s video proposes. He says “…since Toadette was a girl”, which definitively genders her. The main point is that in the games themselves different Toads are called boys and girls and referred to with both masculine and feminine pronouns, proving that if they were envisioned as genderless at their inception, that changed in the proceeding years.

    @@seandwalsh3 In truth, I never watched the Game Theory video, but I could already see that their own research doomed certain parts of their premise. Such as them referencing Paper Mario yet glossing over details that you brought to light. So I agree that aiming to determine the Toads being genderless is fruitless on their part. All I was basically saying about using the video is, in a nutshell, "cite your sources". Because when I saw the video interview being used as an argument for both sides of the coin, regardless if incorrectly utilized by GT, I only then want to watch the video for myself with no commentary from either side. Rool being the game's depiction of Teddy Roosevelt), which is followed by the "Peach has Stockholm Syndrome" video, where he compared Peach and Bowser's non-existant romance to that of Disney's Beauty and the Beast (rather than the original one where it involves Bride-napping because of the father taking a rose from the Beast's Garden and his daughter never questioning why the Beast would take her).

    A bit harsh considering the respectful nature of this video. Keep in mind a few things instead of just hating on him. First, as this video even notes, MatPat doesn't come up with all of the theories alone. A good amount come from his editors and other team members, with him just being the face and voice of the channel. They do the research, he presents the theory. Sometimes its a joint effort, he does some research and they do others. All together they do try to fact check things, but they are limited. Some are better at the research than others, and those that might be newer to the channel are even more likely to not be as good at it. Doesn't mean they're stupid or don't care though. They're also rather limited in how long they can spend researching topics to maintain their release schedule for 3 different channels and livestream (sort of more recently) on a fourth channel, and while a larger team helps that, it also means more chances for mistakes through miscommunication. Next, he has said before that he knows he's wrong about a lot of his theories. He doesn't outright make stuff up (mistakes happen, of course), but they're just meant to be fun and get people thinking, not be perfectly accurate explanations for things. He does try to be right, but the whole point is that its just a theory, as he always says. He pretty well never claims them to be fact unless as a joke or later confirmed by devs (like with his FNAF lore). Finally, and most importantly, his focus with his theories is on teaching new concepts and stuff. For the Toad one, some examples would be that in the fungus world, colours are incredibly important, the point that animals often identify sex and mating types using colour, and that some living things don't reproduce with a strictly male/female system, with some having multiple kinds of mating types, some changing as needed, things like that. Even if the theory as a whole is wrong about Toad, those points are still true facts about the world, and he still taught those points, and more, to some of his viewers. And for those that already knew or focused more on the accuracy regarding the theory about Toad, you can refer back to the previous point of it being fun and bringing up discussions on the topic. All in all, MatPat isn't the only one making the theories, and they're meant more to be fun and educational than to be perfectly right about the game itself. They try, but people make mistakes. You don't need to like him, but especially when this video says its meant in a respectful and friendly way, you don't need to be mean.

    I've had a pretty elaborate theory about the Toads for a long time, so I'm going to say it here. The key to what Toads are is found in Mario & Luigi Partners in Time. In this game, the mushroom-like alien Shroobs invade the Mushroom Kingdom and begin harvesting Toads for their "vim", a green substance used to make their spaceships operate. Now, this seems like a really bizarre coincidence, don't you think? Why should a substance found in Toad bodies be able to produce starship fuel for a random alien species? How did the Shroobs even know about this? Shroobs also show numerous times that they are capable of manipulating the biology of other organisms to turn them into their "shroobified" minions. In short, my theory is this: The Mushroom Kingdom is actually the future of Earth - after being terraformed (fungiformed?) by the Shroobs. Toads are Shroob-modified humans: infected by a parasitic fungus that stunts their growth, makes them subservient in demeanor (the better to harvest them), suppresses their natural secondary sexual characteristics (so that they are forced to rely on the fungus to assist in their reproduction, ensuring that the human child is properly infected), and uses their bodies to produce vim. The Shroobs likely have many such worlds, which they periodically harvest vim from - presumably the Mushroom World (formerly Earth) is at the very fringes of their empire, so it has not been harvested in some time, and because it has not been harvested often it still has enough resources to make it appealing as a new homeworld. Mario and the other non-Toad humans of the Mushroom Kingdom are simply individuals who have a rare genetic immunity to the fungus' infection. It is probable that they form a noble class, but it might also be possible that Toad parents could, in rare circumstances, produce non-Toad human offspring. Bonus theory: Warp pipes are made using Toad vim. It can power interstellar starships and is green when extracted. Think about it.

  • @seandwalsh3

    @seandwalsh3

    2 жыл бұрын

    In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time they specify that the Vim is mixed with chemicals before it’s turned into fuel for the ships - the Vim on its own doesn’t work as a fuel source. Vim appears to be liquid ghost energy, the same stuff Professor E. Gadd mixed with coffee to create Gooigi. It seems that it’s a versatile tool in chemistry. Yes, Shroobs have biological manipulation, however they absolutely did not create the Toads. We know that the Shroobs previously resided on their home planet, which was far from the Mushroom Kingdom and shunned by starlight. They only discovered the Mario’s Home Planet through their telescopes when Mario, Luigi and Peach were babies - at a point when Toads had already existed on the planet for thousands of years. Mario’s Planet is an alternate universe version of Earth, but it’s not post-apocalyptic. Humans are very prevalent all over the world, just not so common in the Mushroom Kingdom. The Toads are clearly a fair deal away from humans, and even seemingly have relatives that don’t have Mushroom caps (such as Shelltops). We’ve seen Warp Pipes all over the world, in space and in other dimensions. We’ve seen people like the Sprixies and Welderberg construct pipes, and we know that the Toads themselves make pipe installations within the Mushroom Kingdom. It’s highly unlikely that they’re constructed with Vim.

I still like Game Theory, but I've learned to accept most of their videos as intentionally far fetched and bizarre crackpot theories for entertainment purposes, using math, science, and well articulated (even if horribly misinformed) arguments to make viewers think outside the given narrative of a game. They were never meant to be accurate nor genuine deep dives into the lore. Just fun and provocative. And I think this is the type of thin MatPat actually wants to see come from his videos. That said, when something is so obviously wrong or misquoted at the most basic level, it definitely can hurt the enjoyment for those of us more invested in the lore of our favorite games.

  • @seandwalsh3

    @seandwalsh3

    I would say neither. The Super Crown is just a magical crown made in ancient times that turns Toadette into a peach-like human. This could’ve been a wish Toadette herself made, which is why the crown only works on her despite her not existing back when it was created and sealed away in the Grand Labyrinth. By nature of it being a magical transformation, nothing really “happens” to the Mushroom or Toadette’s normal body - her form just changes. Think of the caps Yoshi can use to turn into Mario, Luigi and Wario in Super Mario 64 DS. While not the exact same, it still shows someone changing shape with magical headwear.

    There's a bit of that, but as the video points out, there's also fundamental missunderstanding (if not intentionially changing the meaning) of a quote. They *had* the quote, they just changed it to fit their scenario (their being Matpat and his writing team)

  • @larrykoopa64dshacker64
    @larrykoopa64dshacker642 жыл бұрын

    2:20 Yyyeah, Matpat will do that kinda thing, lol 3:19 I really don't understand how Matpat could comfortably make a theory about... anything... all while stretching his points or ignoring any piece of evidence that may counter his theory, when to make a good theory, to address the counter argument is very important. Otherwise if someone brings the counter argument up in a debate, then you might not know what to say. But it just makes your own theory all the more worse when you make up a quote that was apparently said for the sake of strengthening your theory, that's a large level of low I could only expect to see from the Game Theorists. I don't have anything against them, just saying. 4:37 My argument against Matpat for that is that Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS's trophy description of Larry claims Larry to be leader of the Koopalings as well as the boxing ring stage description in the Wii U version in a different regional version than the US. Despite this claim (which is probably mistranslated) Larry states in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser "Also, I'm not gonna be captain. Seems like a lot of hassle." so the way I see it, if Larry doesn't choose to be captain and willingly obeys a goomba despite saying it made him sick earlier because it's too much hassle for him and would therefore, rather obey a goomba than be captain, why would he be leader of the Koopalings? Smash is simply an unreliable source. And basically, what you said, that's also part of the reason why Smash is an unreliable source. It's because it's not canon to Mario AND it gets things wrong. At the very least Mario and Sonic portrays their personalities accurately, unlike Smash (Wario) Honestly annoys me when people try using Smash. 4:49 Ah yeah! How can toads be a species of mushroom when they have bones? Easy answer is, as the interview stated, toads are not evolved mushrooms. How can Matpat come to that conclusion when he not only fabricated the quote to make it sound plausible for this theory, but also conveniently glances over the toad skeleton? That's actually a really cool explanation about the mushroom growing out of the toads' heads and spreading spores that don't create more toads but instead create regular mushrooms. 5:36 Ah yeah! Piranha Plant bones! I didn't really think about what kind of animal Piranha Plants are, but reptiles makes sense. 6:44 Before I hear your response, I'll just say two words that debunk what Matpat is saying... The stork... because babies in Mario are delivered via stork (Eggs for reptile beings likely are too and then they hatch later) for the most part. And listening to your response, I called it! I knew you'd bring up that babies in the world of Mario are delivered via stork. Something Matpat bothersomely missed. 7:30 Before I hear your response. Matpat says this despite the fact Toadette has a pink cap white spots and so do some toads in Paper Mario. And I knew you'd bring that up, because yeah, there is some small forms of toads and I don't know where the toad with the book comes from, but that is, yet another example, of the fact that toads can have inverted colors sometimes as well. 8:01 It's hilarious how there is a mushroom that _slightly enough to be convenient to use for a half-baked game theory_ resembles the default toad color-wise. Yeah, that's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggeee complete stretch. Not only is the shape wrong and the cap pink, but the spots stick out like lumps rather than actually being like how spots on a toad are like. It's funny how Matpat says this despite the fact that, yeah, he can't use this for evidence either way, because toads come in a variety of colors. 8:29 I was about to say, didn't Toadsworth still have a brown cap and brown spots in the past in Partners in Time? The example of that mushroom "aging" didn't even look like the same species of mushroom, so I'm skeptical on if it even is or not. 9:17 Oh that's a neat observation! That toads caps can change color whenever, hahah! That's cool! 10:25 Lol, classic Matpat doesn't research that before saying it's not a thing. 10:43 Ah yeah, he was supposed to have red spots in Super Mario Bros 2. I always prefer to look to artwork, especially as a Koopaling fan when old Koopaling sprites were extremely off model. And good eye, about what Matpat missed from Mario Kart GP. I enjoyed the video! Great video on Toad! I plan on doing a Game Theory debunked video too, but I'm too lazy I suppose.

    To be fair that is honestly what I expect from a channel like this: theories take time, research, experimentation. But the problem with matpat is he is on a deadline: theories need to be posted on multiple channels almost weekly (with some week long gaps). Even with a team this is no easy task. You could be wrong and need to send it out anyway because you are out of time. You be working on something else and you are set back. At this point the only thing matpat really has going for these kinds of theories is that they teach us something along the way (in this case about mushrooms and their reproduction). And in the case with solving Lore you can’t afford any major mistakes so when you are set back you can’t release it unfinished. In turn when he makes a theory he cares more that it is releases rather then if it’s good simply because he needs …

Toad colours are highly varied and have no correlation to age or gender, but is affected by powerups. mushroom colours also likely change to assist in further camouflage (since it turns green from them being in grass for long times). Toadette is in fact female (shown also from the fact the crown power-up turns her into a princess), and Toad is male. they're mammals since they can have moustaches, beards and pigtails the mushroom on their head can produce spores that grow regular mushrooms, meaning that is not how they reproduce. sexual reproduction is a possibility, though baby-delivering storks are canonical in-universe this is the power of debates, from one person being proven wrong we've learnt more about the subject than we would have previously

    this is a very late reply but the super show isnt canon. mario and luigi did not come from brooklyn and did not accidentally end up in the mushroom kingdom. they were born in the mushroom kingdom, as shown in the ending of yoshi’s new island. it has been officially stated that a toad’s mushroom is not a cap and is actually part of its head.

    This might be a little off topic but I need to say it somewhere. Watching Game Theory nowadays is nearly impossible for me. I know people always say "Game Theory was better back in the day" but practically none of those people can pin point what is wrong with modern Game Theory. I believe I know the reason. In the early days of Game Theory the theories were obviously meant to be take with a large dose of salt (ie: Mario Communist). Now a large majority of the theories are meant to be taken fairly seriously (Kirby's not a hero, Hollow Knight). This is a problem because Game Theory is pretty much a business now and they have a tight upload schedule. Because if this they now have multiple people researching at the same time, while also being under a deadline, trying to make a theory sound intelligent. The end result is almost always either a terrible theory that makes no sense, or just restating common lore in an annoying way. I think all of this is just an issue in direction. I propose they make goofy theories, and "serious" science based videos. I know this is personal taste but I think some of the best Game Theory episodes are science/math ones. The best example I can think of is the controversial Kirby episode. Mat Pat spends the entire video talking about how Kirby descends from a powerful ancient being, which is true, but the twist is while he does this he also talks about how Kirby is a piece of crap and is "nOt a HeRo". The entire video relies on miss information to prove this. But even if you remove the Kirby's not a hero part the video is still extremely basic. It's all information the fans already know. If you've taken an hour to research Kirby you probably know most of what he's saying in the video. Since Mat Pat received a lot of negative feedback he changed the direction for part two, making it a more sciencey episode, and I think it's one of his best. All it needed was a different direction. This video reminds me a lot of the Kirby one. Tons of wrong information and misplaced conclusions presented in a lacklustre way. The whole video stems from completely miss understanding one quote in an interview. Again, I do not hate Game Theory, I just think they could be so much better if they realise ground breaking theories are not viable with such a demanding upload schedule.

    I'm not the biggest fan of game theories with actual science and facts behind them. I prefer the ones where he explores the lore and easter eggs inside a game, because I personally think he does a good job on those and I find them entertaining. Plus they let me explore new games I've never heard of.

    @@SirThilliomAnimations I don't really see how anyone can say he does a good job on the lore theories when 90% of the time the lore is completely wrong. The purpose of a theory is to make an interesting assumption about a piece of media's lore. This is impossible if you do not even understand the lore in the first place, which is why he is so often wrong. It doesn't take talent to misunderstand something and then draw a misunderstood conclusion. I know it's not really my place but you can 100% like watching Game Theory, but I think you are also objectively wrong if you say he does a good job on them. They are not accurate and that is (to me) infuriating. Sure the videos are fine if you shut your brain off but that is not the point of a theory. So in conclusion, keep enjoying Game Theory, I'm totally not stopping you. But he should not be applauded for them in terms of lore since they can't hold up to even the smallest bit of scrutiny.
