I hated my replay of it last year. The story is the only thing it has going for it. The level design is the worst in the whole series and the gameplay is uninspired and boring. It's not as bad as Sticker Star but close in my opinion.

Bricks My Mario RPG tierlist is probably 11. Paper Mario: Sticker Star (singlehandedly murdered a series that immediately before was giving me my favorite games of all time) 10. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (most insulting crossover ever, and it had to be between my two favorite subseries of all time) 9. Paper Mario: Color Splash (Fixes some things from Sticker Star but makes some worse) (i also didn't finish this one but i played and watched enough to have a good idea of where I'd place it) 8. Paper Mario: The Origami King (best modern PM by far, sadly restrictions are still very felt and everything it does well is despite them. Restrictions need to die if they ever hope to beat any of the first 3 again) 7. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (some fun characters, including a pinch of FAWFUL) 6. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (satisfyingly long, many beloved returning characters, Antasma is cool) 5. Paper Mario (Set a solid foundation for the PM series, lots of wonderful characters) 3. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story (tie) (FAWFUL) (also Cackletta, Prince Peasley, Popple, Midbus, Dark Bowser, i can't put one of these above the other because I consider them two parts to one story, with Fawful being the primary link) 2. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (best battle system, worldbuilding and audiovisual style, fantastic chapter stories and partners, basically set the standard for what future games should have built on) 1. Super Paper Mario (best story and villains, delightfully dire stakes as well as keeping 99% of TTYD's sound direction & visual appeal imo. Truly an epic of a Mario game. Also zany and bizarre and self aware in all the right ways, aka not constantly screaming the word PAPER in your face and expecting laughter. Did not mind the gameplay shift in this one at all. Sad that it was the last hurrah for the Paper Mario series I fell in love with) I haven't played the Mario + Rabbids games yet, and I have only played the beginning of Super Mario RPG (the upcoming remake is likely where I'll play the full game for the first time)

Sterile Mario RPGs are already the bane of my existence, but for them to waste what could be a fangirl's wet dream of a crossover on sterile Toad-filled blandness, that's insulting on a whole new level. It betrays everything I love about both series.

It was a fine game, and I did have fun playing it, but when it's a crossover of such epic proportions, being (just fine) isn't enough. Where were the unique characters and designs from both games? Why did you shelve Paper Luigi? Where are the badges? Why didn't you involve any of the unique villains? You could have brought Dimentio and Fawful back for a team up, just do something like make it Paper Fawful and 3d Dimentio or something.

@@boobro9959 yeah, it is uncommon. TTYD may be more mechanically improved. But I really love the music and I partners from the original. Plus The original also has all of its chapters really good. TTYD has had 3 less than stellar chapters: 2, 4, and 7. Especially 2 tbh.

Puzzle and Dragons Mario Edition has been mentioned for a fraction for a second this is a massive W for me.

I am *perfectly content* with origami king's middle of the pack placement, that's where I feel it belongs. It's hard for it to compete with the good mario RPGs, because the good ones are REALLY good!

Bowser inside story is my personal favorite. The story is just so perfect, bowser is at his absolute best in the entire series, and it has probably my favorite final boss of all time.

super mario rpg is not on switch online, sadly, but that's because we are getting a remake!

Now we are getting remakes of the best Mario RPG games

I would definitely put partners in time higher but I mostly agree with the list.

How could anyone praise the pacing of TTYD? It’s easily the game’s biggest flaw. The amount of backtracking really brings it down. He must be going off from memory

Great list, I wanna do a list like this someday. Also I’m glad you have Dream Team lower than most people. I feel like the pacing has really taken a hit after playing it so many times as I have so it’s disappointing. On a first time playthrough it’s pretty great but man does the pacing take a massive hit when playing it multiple times.

I have lots of nostalgia for dream team, but man I have to agree. Tried replaying it a few months ago, but quit after about 8 hours in because of how bad the pacing is. Characters never shut up, endless unskippable tutorials, long loading times between battle transitions, and bros attacks are way too long with shoe-horned in motion controls for how often you need to use them. Not to mention, the real world / dream world mechanic gets way too visually repetitive for my liking. I hate this game now but the music is still nice. Thankyou for listening to my TED talk.

No it should have had more love it was robbed from first place. Bowser’s inside story is easily the best rpg of all time and is way better than both Mario rpg and ttyd.

Mario and Luigi dream team is my favorite Mario and Luigi game but Bowser's inside story is a close second.

M&L Dream Team is my favorite in the series. For me it’s even above Bowsers Inside Story.

My list in our from best to worst 1. TTYD (PERFECTION) 2. Super Mario RPG (Arguably #1 once the remastered version comes out on the Switch sometime in November) 3. Paper Mario (Very Great) 4. M&L: Bowsers Inside Story (Best M&L game) 5. M&L: Super Star Saga (Great 1st game to a series) 6. Super Paper Mario (best story out of all 13, but mediocre combat system) 7.M&L: Partners In Time (amazing concept but too short) 8. Mario + Rabbids 9: Sparks of Hope (solid) 10. M&L:Dream Team (solid but pacing was off) 11. Origami King (so much potential to be Top 7; battle system ruined the whole game for me) 12. M&L: Paper Jam (weakest of the M&L games) 13. Color Splash (💩 with seasoning ) 14. Sticker Star (💩)

​​@@the757general2Agreed. Imo doing the puzzles for the battles seemed much more like a chore and it got old FAST for me. I was genuinely annoyed to battle in that game and that's not good for an RPG lol.

I haven't played all the Mario RPGs, but among the ones I have played, I share your placements almost exactly. Kind of crazy how the Paper Mario series includes both the best and the worst that the Mario RPGs have to offer lol

Why? It had fun levels, an interesting story, fleshed-out characters, and good gameplay that mixed the fun bits of Paper Mario with the fun parts of Platformer Mario. If anything, I'd consider it at least to 5 material.

I really need to play more of these. I've played some of Super Paper Mario, recently completed Superstar Saga, and started Partners in Time. I'll aim to play Bowser's Inside Story, Paper Mario, and the SMRPG/TTYD remakes.

It absolutely can be beat. It’s amazing and all, but it’s nowhere near as good as bowser’s inside story.

Nice to see a person who doesnt blindly bash on Origami King and the list is pretty solid. My favs are Superstar Saga, PM64 and SMRPG so seeing all in top 5 is a great taste for me Also yeah, SPM is really overrated for what it is. Its like a mid tier game gets away with its stupid decisions just because the story is "deep" or something

I mean, in Super Paper Mario, they *actually* go in depth to Count Bleck's character. Tell me; just how often did the Mario RPGs *ever* make their villains interesting? Like, almost all of them never really had an interesting to explain their motivations and are just evil for the sake of being evil. Of course, I can agree that getting rid of turn-based combat was a very risky move on Nintendo's part. Super Paper Mario was still both my first Paper Mario game AND first action-based RPG.

@@Loner098 I dont care how much Count Bleck has depth. I find his actions to be pretty stupid and he is not a brat with anger issues like Olly so he doesnt have any excuse for his stupid decisions. We are meant to take him seriously and he just decides to erase everything over a girl. To be perfectly honest, Smithy had like 10 minutes of screentime in SMRPG yet he left much bigger impact because how menacing he is and how hard his fight was.

Sure, the game's got some humorous moments at times but that's about all Origami King has going for it. The combat also likes to drag itself on for no good reason and starts feeling stale eventually. Super Paper Mario's theme is more than just about love - it's about caring for one another as well, and the Pure Hearts display that form of care when shown in that scene of Tippi being glad to be saved by Mario and his friends, Squirp remembering his mother, the Floro Sapiens and King Croacans in their desire for clean water to keep species alive, or Luvbi revealing that she still felt that her fake parents felt like real family to her before saying goodbye to them and transforming into the final Pure Heart. All of that is connected by the Pure Hearts themselves.

@@Loner098 No I feel like Olly's entire point that he is being a stupid brat, we are supposed to hate him and take a lesson from him as we should not blindly hate people. I cant see any life lesson can be taken from a psycopath erasing everything Also yeah it might have some emotional connections but its WAY too pretetious for a Mario game. They made all those stories without anything pleasing happening in between. Its a pretty monotone story telling for a Mario game Also SPM fans pretend like as if all of SPM has wasnt its half baked love story too. Almost entire game is padding with obnoxious puzzles, bad visuals and level designs

@@batty8923 I mean, TTYD had some pretty annoying backtracking and side quests in its own right. And the same could be said for Origami King. While collections could be fun, there are lots of things in the game that the game just outright doesn't tell the player which make the rest of the experience of the game feel like an unfun chore. As for Olly, ironically enough, his hatred against toads pretty much accurately represents the fanbase right now. In Japapnese culture, it's considered offensive to even draw a dot on origami, and the game just outright refuses to tell the player. The ending just feels rushed and it kind of seems like the developers wrote themselves into a corner as far as Olly's motivations went, so it just falls flat. There's lots of things that just don't make sense in Origami King and even Olivia's sacrifice felt forced in a way. On the topic of Smithy from SMRPG again, he does mention "revenge" before the second phase of the fight with him, but the game doesn't bother to explain said revenge. What's the point of him saying that in the first place? Just like Origami King, it feels forced and afterthought for the entire story in the first place.

I hope they make all mario games so we can play all on the switch 😊

I agree with sticker star being the worst lol. The only part I liked about it was the final boss fight with Bowser. It's like that was the only part of the game that they put effort in lol. It was a fun fight.

Thank you for putting the abomination that is sticker star bottom of the pile where it belongs. It’s so awful to play and the only one I failed to finish because of its ridiculous mechanic.The rest I don’t mind where they rank because they’re all enjoyable in some way but sticker star I wish never happened. Paper Mario on N64 is my favourite and possibly my favourite game of all, I just find it so charming and have very fond memories of when I first got it

I didn’t think Sticker Star or Color Splash are that bad of games, it’s just so frustrating with the puzzles to solve to clear the path and saving as much cards or stickers to make sure which one works.

Too much cap, Dream Team is better than Colors Splash and Partners in Time is better than Origami King

Super Star Saga was a Nostalgic Fantasy

I still wish Wart was in Dream Team. I know his first appearance wasn’t really a Mario game but he did show up in the dream of a magic fish once so he is canon to Nintendo proper.

Neither where Bob-ombs or Shy guys (Also first appeared in Smb2) but the became a staple of the Mario Univere. So yeah I agree with you

Idk why but I never really liked Bowser’s Inside Story that much . To me it was nowhere near as fun, interesting or charming as Paper Mario 64 or Superstar Saga (My favourites).

remaking bowser's inside story is pretty much what led to the collapse of that company.

The problem is even the worst rpg Mario game is decent meaning someone will get mad wherever you place things. Yes even sticker start is an okay game people just hate it because the first three papers were like ten out of ten.
