Why I Don't Watch Game Theory Anymore

Ойын-сауық

The Game Theorists used to be one of my favorite channels on KZread.
I don't watch them anymore. Let me tell you why...
👍💬 & SUBSCRIBE TODAY: bit.ly/SubToFinch | EXPAND DESCRIPTION FOR GOODIES!!!
I used to make let's play videos exclusively. I don't make them at all anymore. Sorry to anyone that wants me to finish an old playthrough or do a new one; I just don't find it fulfilling anymore. Anyway, back in my old high school days, I happened upon The Game Theorists and their show, Game Theory. I was immediately enamored with it.
Yes, the early videos from Game Theory were, and still are, rough and unpolished. But there was just nothing like it at the time. I liked Game Theory enough to copy it, and MatPat noticed, but he wasn't mad. He encouraged me! And two years later in 2016, he gave me a shoutout.
Game Theory is a lot of things to me. It will always hold a special place in my heart and in my history, but I just don't watch it anymore. Yes, my tastes have changed as I've aged; yes Game Theory has changed - quite significantly, in fact. But I figured now was as good a time as any to tell you why I stopped watching Game Theory sometime late 2017 to early 2018. Enjoy.
I harbor no ill will towards Matt. He seems like a genuinely kind and charismatic guy, and I can't bring myself to dislike him. Not even close. I will never be able to repay the kindness of helping out a smaller channel one ten thousandth of his size. I wish him and his family only the best. This video does not criticize Matt - it criticizes only Game Theory, so please to not erroneously believe my rebuke of Matt's show is a rebuke of Matt himself, because that is simply not the case.

Mat Pat's content for me is like gum in between meals. I chew it while I wait for the next part of a game or movie. The gum tastes good and keeps me occupied, but eventually it loses its flavor and not long after that it's completely stale and flavorless. So naturally I spit it out once it's time for lunch or dinner. I don't take it seriously, but there are parts of the gum's flavor that stick, because sometimes they actually come true for lunch or dinner. But it feels with certain games or movies-- Mat Pat's influence makes the dinner all gum. Becoming the meal, not what it was intended to be. Just an apitiser.

Then he calls those communities hostile and toxic because they had the audacity to tell him he was blatantly wrong. Yeah, Hollow Knight fans did not appreciate the influx of 8-14 year olds parroting his hilariously bad pale king theory, so that means we're hostile and toxic

As someone who has been into FNAF since its debut, seeing Matpat take over the theorizing was so disheartening. Figuring out the story was no longer a collaborative effort between you and your friends; now it was a hierarchy with Matpat at the top. Every time new FNAF content comes out, all I ever see is, “What will MATPAT think about this?” He’s oversaturated the fanbase and I’ve considered leaving because of it. If Scott needed help figuring out his story, he should have attended a storytelling workshop or writing classes, not… whatever this became.

If the film/game maker has a grand plan from the beginning to the conclusion of the story, they would plan the seed of the ending throughout the entire story. I have guessed plot twists of the prestige, 6th sense, and the usual suspects because the filmmaker planted clues for the twists. They reward me for being an observant viewer by making me feel clever However for a long format series like games/serial/books. The writers don't really have a plan on how to end their stories from the beginning ,so they just make things up along the way. GRRM aaid it best: "you don't change the murderer just because you saw a fan theory that accurately predicts the murderer, because your story would be an incoherent mess" I'mma paraphrasing of course

Dude, how is your channel not bigger than it is? This video was top notch quality. Earned my sub, very interesting topic too, I’ve been a theory fan since the 2013 era-ish so I witnessed this all play out as well. Makes me sad since I grew up with these theory videos and watching his newer ones kinda feels boring, it’s lost it’s soul in a way. Those early videos had this heart of just pure unadulterated ridiculousness that made them so much fun and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Austin is still one of my favorites of this genre. However the theorist channels have grown stagnant over the years and it sucks, food theory has that heart of ridiculousness but I wonder how long it will last before inevitably suffering the same fate. Regardless, great video, solid points, good formatting, wish I could give more than one like.

"Egos trip, but the humble doesn't stumble." I don't despise game theory, in fact, I think it was very entertaining back then....I repeat, back then. However, even if he was right or overthinking, he left so many details out due to one small thing. Not listening to the main source of the creator's intention. I didn't realize this until Gnoggin did a rebottle on Game theory's three videos, and then everything fall apart so fast when I notice he wasn't taking reconsideration of other stuff like he tried to connect the dots of Undertale is connected to Earthbound because of a fan game, which that's not even true, and Sonic isn't as fast as he wants to be, because he didn't reconsider he was trying to avoid doing so much damage or getting hurt himself. Look I know it's just a theory, but don't base on real life stuff or make a random theory for just the views, because if you don't make it a strong one, if you don't follow up on the world in that game or the creator's intentions, the whole thing will fall apart so fast.

The effort and passion is gone in his videos and it shows, which is why his view counts are dropping, though he constantly discusses things like he's a master of the algorithm, even he has limitations on how he can get more views on his low-effort videos... I usually really only watch the videos every now and then for entertainment, but the issues you mentioned are definitely there, and in some ways it has gotten worse. I genuinely hope Matt can self-reflect on the channel and realize the flaws, and try better. The issue is that there’s a whole team behind him, he’s no longer independent, so it’s probably difficult to change things. I don’t hold anything against Matt or his team, or against the channels, in fact the videos where Matt is more serious are some of my favorites (like when he talked about the impact theories have on games) but there are definitely issues that rise out of the channels

Wow, great video. I actually noticed this. I remember being so frustrated when he said that Luigi was Rosalina's father. Not only is this not implied at all in the games but if it was she would probably be Mario's daughter. I also don't like the Link is dead theory because the game even outright states that he is alive, a ghost in the game even refers to Link as being "full of life." I would be ok with these theories but the majority of these game's fanbases have borderline taken it as canon and it is so frustrating. Game theory has been the only thing that has ever took away the fun from the original.

Game Theory, lost it's early self-contained and meaningless fun attitude when it became an actual business, matpat now has the responsibility of his livlihood, his family's livlihood, and his employee's livelihood, he can't make some random content with no indication of wether it would be a flop or a sensational thing, he has too much responsibility to gamble like he used to in his early days; Game Theory has exchanged the self-contained meaningless fun for stability where videos he spent dozens of hour researching fails because of chance. Game Theory grew up, it now has too much responsibility for hit or miss content, even though we ourselves as fans may not like it, we need to understand that time passes, things grow/develop, and responsibilty increases.

Unlike with Game Grumps, where I used to enjoy them but fell away over time, I was never really too into Game Theory. From the beginning, I always found MatPat's voice and personality to feel really artificial. That aside, I didn't really start hating the show until the Rosalina video, which is when I'd argue his ego started to be an issue. The whole video was him giving really flimsy evidence (at least one he was being blatantly dishonest about), all the while parading it around like he had just thought up the smartest theory of all time. It was just so grating IMO. Other videos like the "Is Mario Mental?" and stuff still irk me when my audience brings them up in the comments of my video like there's even a slight chance it's real :/

I can say that this is a really well articulated vid! I've read some of the comments on this vid and i do agree with a lot of them. For me it's been that Game Theory's videos just feel,, soulless and corporate nowadays. I remember consciously noticing that when i saw that they started reusing the same animations between videos (where they'd play a video in the background while two characters, one in the bottom left and one in the top right, slowly move about). Also for some reason a lot of their newer videos just have ugly thumbnails, like they actively make me feel uncomfortable, which is just impressive.

Are you sure that's the point he was trying to make? After watching it myself, I gleaned that he was pretty clearly trying to say that he never wants to steal fan art at all no matter if it's close to the original work or not. He specifically said that he only uses assets that are marked for reuse on google images. That means that sometimes he or his editors pull a piece of work that wasn't intended for reuse, but they never do it on purpose. I just thought I should just put this reply here for anyone that might not be interested in watching that video for themselves and wanted to fact check Infinite Octopaw's claim by checking the replies.

@@WunderWyrm ok then why didn’t he just apologize? Why go on for 15 more minutes about how “actually artist are the REAL thieves.” Like, this is textbook “whataboutism” that renders the apology moot. The problem was that to took art without permission and he made a video about how fan art doesn’t belong to the artist. It really gross. I linked the video because that’s exactly what he rambles on about. I encourage anyone to watch it, that’s why I linked it because that is what the majority of the video is about. Also the “I used google images” excuse doesn’t hold because in collage you are literally taught not to do that for exactly this reason. It’s not the artist fault his team was to lazy to double click the images they use. One of his excuses is “but it looked so real.” Like bro… or “back when I first started fans were great full when I used their work.” Go watch the video again. It some super gross stuff in it that’s strait up gas lighting. It’s a apology video surrounded by excuses and victim blaming and painting the opposing side as morally dubious by invoicing the claim that fanart infringes on IP ownership. It’s really REALLY bad form and manipulative. It destroys any idea that he was actually sorry. Like images someone apologize to you then makes 100 excuses why it wasn’t their fault then calls you a criminal. Because that’s exactly what his did. You start to think they aren’t actually sorry. Also no: anyone interested in Fact checking me, watch the video I linked of him saying the things he said, not the fan replies. Like, ??? WunderWyrm, your advice doesn’t make any sense? People shouldn’t form a opinion based on what his fans think of the situation. People should listen to what the man himself actually has to say. I put the link in for anyone to use for a reason. Like, good for you for actually watching it, even if I feel his manipulation tactics went over your head.

@@infiniteoctopaw The impressions we got from the video seem so different it is almost like we watched two different videos. I never got the impression at all that Mat thought that the artists were in the wrong for having work too similar to the original piece. At the 7:58 timestamp in that video he says, "this isn't me trying to condone any mistakes, it's just trying to show how easy it is for some of this stuff to unintentionally slip through the cracks." You could be calling him a straight up liar, but if you look at his word's he's saying that he isn't trying to say what he did was right, he was just trying to say that it was hard to avoid. When you use quotation marks with "actually artist are the REAL thieves," I feel like you are bending the facts and trying to manipulate me yourself. Nowhere in the video does he say or imply that artists are in the wrong for not wanting their art to be shown without credit (or at all, if they really want that). Instead all he does is help artists by giving them tips on how to protect their art from being reuploaded without permission or credit. With the google images thing, he doesn't just say that he's simply using google images he says that he only uses images from google that are "labeled for commercial reuse or reuse with modification." (12:08 in the vid). When an image is marked in that way it is most likely because the artist accidentally marked it that way themselves or because someone was able to steal the art and repost onto google images with that label ticked. While I'm not certain of the reputation of the google images labeling system, I do know that it is different from normal google images and different from the google images system that you learned not to used in college unless you failed to specify that you know for a fact that the google images labeling system is not to be trusted (if I am wrong about this than could you link to an article or video that says why? I think it would help both of us understand this topic even better) I don't know how to respond to you're third paragraph other than just saying that the only gas lighting I've seen after watching the video has been from you. If you squint hard enough I can see how someone might think he was doing those things but he never actually does them. He never says that fan art infringes on IP ownership. He never said that fan art doesn't belong to the artist. He gets close and references how both his content and fan art might have gotten taken down by the big video game publishers, but he never says that fan art itself is illegal. He never says that anything allows him full rights of art, that the artists of which, don't want him to use. I'm sorry if I came across as trying to say people shouldn't research for themselves and they should just take my word as fact. I rather wanted to just explain why I felt the need to post my original reply; I wanted to invite skepticism into your claims for anyone browsing the comments, but were not interested enough to watch the video themselves leading them to take your words as simple truth without understanding the fragility of those words themselves. I definitely concede that that video's meaning can easily change depending on how you want to look at it. Most of the Kirby Box Art part of it feels a bit like manipulation, but at the same time it's also just him presenting his argument of why artists need to be more careful about their work if they feel the need to keep it out of other people's work. As I've said before, he doesn't use that to say what he did was right (notice what he said in the first quote that I referenced, "this isn't me trying to condone any mistakes". Condone as defined in oxford languages means: accept and allow (behavior that is considered morally wrong or offensive) to continue.) This argument, however, might just come down to a difference in opinion between us. You may think differently, but I believe that even though Mat was in the wrong for using art the artist didn't want him to use, it is also in part the artists fault for not communicating that clearly enough to Mat that they didn't want their art to be used. I think Mat had the right idea by giving artists tips on how to protect their work so that it wouldn't be found floating around on the internet somewhere uncredited. I'm sorry if this was really long. I felt like the best way to articulate my feelings would be to try to provide evidence behind what I said and I thought it would help me coordinate my thoughts about this if I approached it in a long form like this. Sorry if I've said anything that makes you mad, I don't intend for this to just be a way to enrage you, I rather just wanted this to be an experience that we both could learn from and be able to leave more educated. I also didn't proofread it so it probably isn't very cohesive to read, but I also don't really care that much about this to spend that much time making the perfect rebuttal, but I think it should at least be legible. I hope you have a good day and I appreciate that you spend time making art, making the world more beautiful with all of your work.

I agree with the points brought up in this video. I watched Game Theory since 2014/2015 and while this might be the result of growing up, I don't find his theories to be that entertaining anymore and that they feel more like a trip to MatPat's insanity (I get that this part of his videos is supposed to be a joke but it is getting quite overused just like many others he does almost every single video). Its also to note that while I like his videos on FNAF and that I admit that they were what got me into the channel in the first place, I am kinda tired of the whole backloop he is doing with Scott Cawton, like if this was left with only that first interaction that would've been just a cool moment between a fan and the community (through MatPat) that could have just remained as "hey remember when this happened and we all lost it" or something along those lines. But no, now it turned into a weird game of you might guess (the theorists) and then I change whatever I want just for giggles (Scott). And if Scott really wanted his fans to interact with him and his games more he could have done it in better ways and in more indirect ways (for exemple through puzzles or something directed at all his fans), because it was always kinda obvious that his responses were all for Mat, which in my opinion created a very weird relationship between the GT channel and Scott (even if it wasn't his intention to do so). On the other hand, while I do understand that his main audience will always be a younger demographic that is not an excuse for acting as if his style to try to predict everything and to always be right about everything kinda ruins the whole experience and expectation people can have with media in general, especially with impressionable kids. Like, I remember watching him back when I was a kid and eating everything he said up, while not realising the theories were most probably not sustainable for the most part and made just for entertainment (even if this aproach was probably more evident in subtext). And all in all, it feels like the Game Theory and Film Theory channels lost what made them special in the first place because of the apparent obsession MatPat has for always getting it right and him ignoring any reasonable criticism made about the direction he took for his channels and about the mistakes he makes in his videos.

I just finished watching this, and I'm not a super duper fan of game theory however, I enjoy what they give. It's small fun little theories at the end of the day and whether you let it affect what you watch or play that's on you. I agree that the theorists definetely over-analyze many things. But, that's exactly why it's so much fun. As he grew older he knows when he's wrong and he's accepted that. I don't think Scott let Game Theory affect how he continues Fnaf, he's made several books, games, and etc and he's successful. He's his own person and yeah he did watch the fnaf theories but he didn't change certain things because of Mat. He changed it because over the years he just had a different viewpoint his story for example the box from fnaf 4 and what was inside clearly had changed apparently 3 times as he said in dawko's interview with him. He clearly doesn't want anyone taking over his franchise and actually enjoys what he makes as shown with the fnaf movie. At the end of the day it's just silly theories. They're just videos for us consumers to enjoy, not let it affect the way we enjoy a game or a series, movie, whatever.

“You learn the [fnaf] lore by watching game theory” “It’s clear Scott didn’t have a clear idea of how his story would end. Scott would just subvert the expectations Mat had set up” I’m sorry, but this is wrong. Yes, Scott watched and often responds to Game theory videos. Yes, Game Theory often over complicates details in the story. But the idea that he changes his story based on Mat’s videos is false. Scott has said Mat has been right about certain details and wrong about other details. And that’s true. A lot of what Mat says about the story is just factually untrue. Scott isn’t changing ideas to make Mat’s ideas right or wrong, Mat’s idea about the story just happen to be either right or wrong sometime. There is no change being made in response to what Mat says. The idea that you NEED to watch GT in order to understand the story is also false, because what Mat says about the story is often wrong. And also because most people’s interpretations and conclusions about the story happen BEFORE Mat even makes a video about the newest installment. Mat often isn’t the first one to come up with a certain theory or interpretation of the story. You can understand fnaf without ever watching game theory. They exist separately.
