Storyline:
Based on the multi-award winning short film Illness (2013), No Letting Go (2015) follows the story of the Spencer family whose middle son, Timothy, struggles with anxiety, depression and mood disorder. As his symptoms become more and more debilitating, his parents are faced with painfully difficult choices that will change their lives forever.
Reviews:
""No Letting Go" is obviously a labor of love. While the film is marvelously made, it just doesn't seem like the most commercial of productions. Instead, it's a film with a strong message and addresses a problem seldom talked about in movies...childhood mental illness.
When the film begins, Timothy is a 10 year-old who is starting to show some serious signs of anxiety--something you just wouldn't expect in a kid his age. His parents take him to therapy but it doesn't really seem to help. Then, the film jumps ahead to age 14. Now Timothy is not only anxious but seriously depressed...and with childhood depression comes a lot of other things, such as anger and unpredictability. The film not only focuses on Timothy but also on his family and how Timothy's precarious mental state effects them all in different ways. His parents' marriage is tense and difficult and his brothers obviously are affected as well. So is there any hope? Of course, as this a film about so much more than just a miserable family.
There is so much I love about this movie. The acting is very nice and most of the folks are faces you won't recognize...which is a plus because this makes them seem like a very real family. The direction by Jonathan Bucari is just amazing and the writing by Bucari and Randy Silverman shows that they know a lot about mental illness and its treatment. Considering I am a trained psychotherapist and have had to deal with mental illness in my own family, I can clearly see that they sure did their research. As a result, they offer a film with many great things to offer...hope for families...awareness of how widespread these problems are...the way it affects friends and neighbors...as well as the ways depression come out in children and teens. All in all, a great message film which not only does a great and beneficial service but is also highly engaging. It also has been taking many awards in the film festival circuit...and justified as the film has so much to offer and is so original. Fortunately, this film will be making its debut in March--so you can see it without the need of going to a film festival!"

I suffered from depression, panic attacks, and suicidal ideation for about 9 years. Therapists and psychiatrists said I had bipolar and a number of other "mental illnesses" but God healed me from it. I was told I'd be on psych meds for the rest of my life to maintain emotional stability--I've been med-free for more than 5 years. Freedom is possible. I thank God every day I got my mind back. This film had a lot of depth, and I appreciated the storytelling. Little Jessie's perspective of Tim's mental health challenges hurt the most to see, but I appreciated how every member of the family was represented here.

God doesn't always choose to heal when brain chemistry runs amok. Not saying that God CANNOT heal, but sometimes He does not for His own reasons. As a lifelong sufferer of multiple mental illnesses AND a Christian with a strong faith, I have a strong conviction that mental illness that doesn't respond to clinical treatment or spiritual intervention is some of our crosses to bear in this fallen, sin tainted world. Yet we can know that God is with us in our struggle when He doesn't choose to set us free from it... and that He is actually using the struggle for our eventual good and His glory. There are scientifically and medically proven evidences of the physical aspects of clinical mental illness. For numerous sufferers this goes far beyond any spiritual issue or components. Some very devout, faithful believers suffer with mental illnesses for a lifetime, and this needs to be recognized and accepted by the Christian community

This was my life. A mothers struggle to help her child is never ending. My son refused med's in the end and I lost him in 2017 at the age of 27. My heart is forever broken. To all suffering, know you are loved and find the help that works for you because the option of you not being here is not acceptable for those that love you. There is help, find what works for you, if it doesn't work, try again. The option of losing you is not an option. There is not a day that goes by that I don't miss my son and my life changed forever when I lost him.

My brother and I grew up with a sister with bipolar and I would not wish that on my worst enemy. My parents focus was always on my sister leaving my brother in limbo. Now that I am older I realize how difficult it must have been for them but as a child who could not understand I felt lonely and unloved. Those feelings are still with me today 60 years later.

No one can proudly say that his life is perfect. We may feel regret/sorrow for the past years and have some negative effects on our later life. However, hope you can focus and be grateful for what you have. Forgiveness is not an easy thing; however, no one is a natural parent and they were also learning, frustrated and exhausted in that time . With the experience of being "lonely and unloved", I believe you are a more considerate and soft-hearted person. May God bless you with peace and happiness.

Ignorance, still feeling it is quackery. When we keep putting the Idiot's in charge of course things aren't going to work out in a smart way, they are not smart that we KEEP putting in office, also who votes is usually not equipped to vote with the knowledge of what is going on to vote. Only educated about the current ballot always should be allowed to vote on today's issues. Stop the killing, get these kids and young adults some mental health care asap.

This was realistic but sensitively handled. Many issues were highlighted, including the feelings of powerlessness of the parents, the friends' lack of empathy, the reality of Tim's illness and the loneliness or perhaps 'aloneness' he must have experienced before meaningful treatment. When I think of my Dad's battle with schizophrenia, I am sad that he had to undergo that experience, but am grateful that, by God's grace, and with the help of the right medication, he maintained his peaceful, caring, God-fearing nature. I understood how God wants the best for all of us and will do his utmost if we allow Him. Be still and know that He is God.

As someone going through these struggles at this time in my life, this movie broke my heart. Being an adult is difficult enough never mind a child having to understand. Almost every word Tim said, I have uttered. Watching this gave me even a better understanding what friends, families, and coworkers experience. Sad movie to watch if you are a Tim, eye opener for those on the outside trying to understand. Very well done.

Every heart knows its own sorrow. Now comes a prayer of complete surrender using caps as emphasis to help others find THE WAY AT GOD'S MERCY (HIS LOVE GIFT IN JESUS CHRIST) since our contract with survival is brokered with sadness, fragility and anxiety. On a balcony of space STEPPED A PURE AND HOLY GOD. IN AWESOME SOLITUDE YOU STOOD ALONE. Not one faint star to give YOU light; just endless darkness, it was blackest night. But somehow in the darkness YOU COULD SEE. YOU SAW mountains high and lofty, YOU SAW valleys lush and green. YOU SAW babbling brooks, and wildflowers grow, YOU EVEN HEARD a robin sing. Then through YOUR COMPASSION STANDING OUT THERE IN YOUR TOMORROW, YOU SAW forum's visitors, their families and friends. 🥰 YOU SAW them as sinners (missing the mark when aiming to solve a problem then creating another resulting in their weaknesses prevailing causing guilt of wrong doing) because there is no intrinsic righteousness in any of us due to Adam’s sin. YOU SAW them as they grew from a baby into adulthood due to YOUR HANDS OF MERCY. 🥰 YOU SAW them pursuing a career path for the purpose of obtaining the gains of the world not realizing that it is a loss compared to what YOU DID on the cross. YOU SAW them working long and laboring hard to receive justification by grace even though YOU stated, "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."(John 6:29 KJV) YOU SAW the unwillingness to accept YOUR PLAN OF SALVATION THROUGH YOUR SON JESUS CHRIST. YOU SAW them living with the guilt of committing crimes to the heart. YOU SAW them enduring personal crisis. YOU SAW the weight of the burden on their hearts with each tribulation. YOU SAW them seeking comfort from the above mentioned topography, ONE OF THE MANY MARVELS YOUR PERFECT HANDS HAVE MADE. 👏👏👏 YOU SAW their worries about tomorrow. If their hearts were a window that they could look through, oh the pains and scars they would see. What a cruel fate the skin gives as a mask to the inward pain. But the skin couldn’t cover THE SUFFERING YOUR ONE AND ONLY SON BORED on the cross as PAYMENT for all our sins because HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ALONE HAD THE MERIT TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR HOLINESS. Indeed, ONLY HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS IS SUFFICIENT TO SAVE us from this present evil world as evidenced by Mary's song of praise. "And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." (Luke 1:46-47 KJV) Awesome thanks to YOUR GREAT PARDON for being easy on the heart. 🥰 They have seen a lot of crazy things done in YOUR NAME. For example, the father of lies futile attempts to make crooked the right ways of the LORD to turn people away from faith in the WORKS OF JESUS CHRIST ALONE. How can anyone bear the thought of his or her life story detracting from the GLORY AND HONOR KNOWN TO BELONG TO CHRIST ALONE? As a consequence, YOU ARE A MYSTERY OF GREAT MYSTERY to them. Despite this conviction, YOU ARE MINDFUL of them as evidenced by the fact that YOUR JUDGEMENT is not speedy, allowing them to pursue the desires of the flesh. They are aware of hypocrisy in religious assemblies that like to be seen and heard. In addition, secular education teaches that there is no right and wrong, if GOD exists there is no way of relating to HIM, and moral standards shift according to the whims of fashion. Therefore, their minds are conditioned to question everything this world has to offer including “THY POWER THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE DISPLAYED.” They have accepted the heavy burden of dealing with the troubles of this life and seek to know another way, YOU THE GREAT COMFORTER TO ALL who did receive YOU as their personal SAVIOR. Still, YOU have shown them NEW MERCY every day with each thought they make and each breath they take. Unfortunately, like the prodigal son, we are all guilty of wandering far from YOU LORD because the negative experiences of our lives tend to build roadblocks to the TRUTH. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST HELP them to identify the way, truth, and eternal life (that is YOU). Since to know and follow your SPIRIT is more exciting than any 007 movies, and YOU DELIGHT MAKING the ordinary into extraordinary. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST MAKE them understand that there is no way around YOUR TRUTH, and that there is something about YOUR NAME. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST HELP them defeat in their minds what is false in YOUR EYES. LORD GUIDE their thoughts to know that the path of sin is hard on their hearts for the purpose of crying out to YOU to know the joy, peace of having the heavy burden LIFTED by THE GOD OF PEACE I AM, and ANCHOR their souls in THE HAVEN OF REST. In other words, LORD use the storms in their lives to get a hold of them to trust YOU and believe. In truth, YOU ARE THE JOY that seekest them through pain. LORD HELP their fainting hearts to believe that YOU, who was slain on the cross over 2000 years ago has the POWER TO CHANGE lives today through the INSTANTANEOUS GREAT FAVOR from GOD to the house of Israel made known in believers by YOU to make YOUR NAME EVERLASTING. 🥰 For as the statue liberates the citizens so the cross liberates the soul. ONLY YOU can calm the trouble waters of the mind when one admits to wanting salvation from one’s sinful nature, JESUS IS LORD, and believes in the heart that GOD RAISED HIM from the dead TO LIFT the heavy burden of sin's guilt away from the heart in accordance to YOUR WORD found in Psalm 51:1-10 KJV. 👏👏👏👏👏👏 O, the wonder of it all to experience within the flesh the feeling of a tree being cut back/pruned in order for it to grow stronger and more beautiful after meditating on the words of said Psalm. 🥰🙌 LORD MAKE them know that ONLY YOUR HOLY SPIRIT, through the experience of a new birth within believers, can prevent the family circle from being broken because THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE YOU HAVE GRANTED means a chapter of their lives is decided. Creation sings the rebirth song for them yearly, through YOUR PROMISE of springtime, giving rise to the idea that by the mention of YOUR NAME flowers grow, and the desert blooms again. 🥰 LORD GUIDE their understanding of words to use to come into YOUR PRESENCE with an honest reverence of WHO YOU ARE to experience the beauty that time can't erase YOUR WISDOM resting on their faces. LORD STRENGTHEN their determination to never waiver in efforts to search for YOU because the wages of sin is too high for anyone to pay. Additionally, THE KING OF KINGS is needed in their hearts to learn how to expand their capacity to love for YOU are LOVE in any language. 🥰 Once they learn to speak it with boldness through YOUR WONDERFUL COUNSELING all the world will hear, and know that LOVE is the language of their hearts. So LORD, KEEP KNOCKING on their doors until they let YOU in to know hardships and struggles will end with a GREAT CELEBRATION WITH YOU. 🥰🙌 If one believes faith cannot be forced, YOU WILL GIVE that individual over to the stubborn heart to follow own counsel which will surely fail him or her to the extent that the punishment will last forever found in Psalms 81 NIV. Given this, I pray that YOU WILL MAKE that person see that this feeling is wasted for a world in which we become strangers as we age, gives us thrills instead of peace, aims to solve a problem but creates another, and unrest surges with each passing generation. Shed some light into their broken hearts for YOU ARE THE GREAT JEHOVAH, THE GOD THAT HEALETH thee. Lastly, LORD when they call on YOU in earnest prayer to come into their hearts to be born again (repentance manifesting itself in a changed life), I pray that YOU WILL GIVE them the blessed assurance of their salvation because nothing breaks YOUR HEART, or tears YOU apart like when they cry from the trials of the devil who comes to slander, falsely accuse, steal, kill & destroy. Only by drawing nearer to YOU LORD will put them on a path to a glorious one way trip winding upward to YOU where pain is not welcome because the heart will never break anymore. For ONLY YOU UNDERSTANDS our tears since YOU LOOK at the heart, while humans look at the flesh. O LOVE that will not let them go. When they don't have the strength to try, and have cried all they can cry hear their hearts that need YOU more today than yesterday. Many thanks LORD for speaking TRUTH in our lives TO BLESS those who are not offended by THEE. LET YOUR WILL BE DONE because YOUR LOVE ALONE CONQUERS everything by WAITING for them to cease struggling, and finally surrender to YOUR EMBRACE to learn about YOUR LOVE AND PROMISE TO TAKE CARE of your children exquisitely. 🥰 Since... "at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore"... (Psalms 16:11 KJV), and the nail print for them to know YOU by answering the following question. How did CHRIST LOVE people into a relationship with HIM? 🥰

I grew up with a mother that had bi-polar and a brother with it. it was very hard on us kids. We didn't know if she was gonna be mad or happy. I struggled with an ex-husband that also had bi-polar. I was hit, lied to, etc. I lost a baby when he pushed me down the steps in a fit of rage after drinking all night at the bar. I didn't know what to do. I tried leaving so many times but I had to deal with the reverse psychology and him making me feel like i was in the wrong to keep me there. Finally after trying for 16.5 yrs, I walked away. Our daughter now struggles with Anxiety and Depression. I do know how heart wrenching it is watching them go through so much and the fact we as parents can't just make go away. For the past 2 yrs, she has missed so much school and I have tried everything. She is a senior now and trying to do it online to be at home. she now has a job and works with me. She is kept busy and she works usually by herself. She does better. To all the parents out there that are struggling; it is a very hard game. be strong, deep breathes, and just listen to them. I let mine talk and I don't try to push her or interrupt.....just listen; let them speak. Don't get angry with what they say. They will lash out. Love them and don't stop. Let them hear it.....Let them see it.....Let them feel it. It does help. Yes you are going to have moments when you break down and cry or feel pain and its ok. do it away from them. do not let them see you break down. be strong. The key to them getting better starts with love and understanding. This movie has made me look back at my child as she grew up. I cried. Just love everyone.

I’ve been through this. With 3 of my four children. They are 5 years apart and life was chaos for years. So little is understood (or was then) about mental health. Our kids were just “naughty”, “manipulative”, etc. I felt completely isolated. You struggle behind closed doors and say nothing. There was so much happening that my youngest practically brought himself up. My kids would flip out and run off into the night (we lived in an area with no street lights and 3 mountain roads out of our valley). We were in a constant state of high alert. I still do not know how we survived but we did. I thank God for 2 good friends and my amazing mom. To all those living this right now, find a support group, talk to a good friend. Don’t isolate. My greatest support came from a friend I met in a support group. My best friend understood and never judged. My mom suffered from mental health issues when I was small and was my strength and stay. Reach out to others! Ask for help!

That was a beautiful movie. I only wish other families had such a powerful and healing ending. My second son was just like that. He has bipolar, Autism. His older brother would get so upset with the behavior and how do you explain to a child what's wrong with his brother when you don't even know. His two younger sisters were confused and scared when he would act out. This happened almost 50 years ago when no one really understood Autism, ADHD, and bi polar disorder. Still dealing with it now, although he is starting to take medications that may help, but me and my husband are up in years and he lives with us. This movie made me cry out for the mother so much because there truly is no one you can talk to about it. His sisters and brother love him so much, but can not stay long when they visit. My husband had a stroke and is diabetic and extremely depressed, so it is just me basically taking care of him. No one understands unless they have been there. I can't stop crying because it is like seeing myself in that mother, and remembering how my other children were so affected by it. There needs to be much more education for families and the public to learn about this so that parents with children like this do not feel so isolated and scared and physically, mentally, and emotionally lost, abandoned, and terrified of not if something happens, but when. Thank you for posting this movie, it is my hope that it will reach more people. Thank you sincerely.💜

I didn't think this movie would affect me the way it did. I've known people and friends who were bipolar, most smoked weed and it helped a lot, a few just drank. I tried to be there for them as much as possible but it wasn't always the case., I have issues myself so I couldn't always help it or them. I understand the struggle and the constant fight and the apologizing for everything and feeling bad all the time. This was such a relatable movie and wonderfully reenacted. Help is available and you should never be ashamed to ask for it!

Most don't receive the help they need because of affordability and/or lack of a support system. This was beautifully told. I liked that is wasn't just about the person with bipolar but it pointed out the affect on the caregivers and families.

Because each of these individuals are different even when they are diagnosed with a general illness. They behave and react differently some can be violent. So it's very hard to have a support system where you can provide enough professionals to help each of them individually. Decades ago I volunteered in a mental hospital each of the 50 patients had different mental challenge. A guy was very sexual and loved to touch females. Another was just sitting there all day. Another was verbal. How do you help them? Our brain is a complex matter.

Great movie showing what the family, friends and the person with this disorder has to deal with. I am a 65 year old with bipolar disorder was never diagnosed until almost 40 years old. I lived a life in turmoil never understanding how to deal with my thoughts or actions. destroying relationships and abandoning those I loved and who loved me. So many Medications, hospitalizations, even jail time. It is so difficult as a older man to look back at what seems was such a wasted life. But my relationship with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ is gradually helping me to deal with regrets from the past. I urge any family no matter how old or young with a family member dealing with this illness to use all and any resources that you can as this family did. It is the love of God and people who help us deal with this. I isolated myself for so many years. And you don't have to. There is always hope.

Thanks for sharing and adding to your point. 🥰

Some people learn by feeling (touching); some by seeing (reading); some by writing; some by hearing (listening), and some by talking (speaking). Give each child or person a chance to be themselves and to be successful.

Wow! These parents are saints. It was heartbreaking when, after all the hardship they went through, and knowing twice as much is coming at them, she's saying she's sorry when she told her husband that she has cancer. Dad was fantastic, too. So many men would have been as absent as they can be with this kind of an atmosphere at home. He was there just as much for his children, and then for her. They never forgot what brought and keeps them together: love.

As a Family 2 Family facilitator for NAMI, I found this movie to be deep on so many levels. The struggle of watching your loved one deteriorate before finding a diagnosis is heartbreaking, but the resilience of the parents were spot on. Watching how the bipolar disorder affected the siblings was painful but once the family sat in on a therapy session, I loved hearing each character express their feelings about Tim, his diagnosis, their misunderstanding(s) of parents fixing their brother, and overall reactions were very real. The ending was hopeful, and that in itself is a bonus.

It's unrealistic to think people live in mansions or that moms can stay at home. Ordinary kids don't have these benefits. But there must be more kids suffering at school than just the one. At the residential center, Tim wasn't the only kid with inappropriate responses or fears. Friends are people that know you and accept you with your shortcomings. I think that's a wonderful experience. They never addressed his medIcations at the end. I think it's important to recognize if that is necessary. Otherwise, kids are going to self medicate. Eventually, they have kids of their own to torture. I like this film because we all need to accept the levels of mental illness all around us. When I was a child, I wished that someone would rescue me from the pain of living under the cruelty of a mentally ill mother. No one helps. If we can be truly aware, then we can help the mother of a struggling child and the struggling child under a sick mother.

This had me crying, what Tim displays is the very extreme of my son, but my son has described aspects of all of these feelings, we as parents didn't even know that something was very wrong until he failed every class his 1st semester of 10th grade, before we just thought he was being a lazy teenager, he just refused to get out of bed, I know it is so hard, but mostly because I can't fix it for him, and no amount of hugs and love can make it better. My son decided to go online and teach himself about himself and everything else he is interested in and got a job overnight, with very few people, he manages himself , with art and music, and video gaming of course ❤

Ronnie Reagan the movie star out of Hollywood set all mentally ill peoples free with out-patient meds. he stole the money for mental health, why he had so much and we now have young killers on the loose mentally ill. Reagan thought mental illness was quackery, not real so Reagan then Bush W. stole all that money for themselves, and it shows. They became rich with many houses. Amazing. Pres. Obama put monies back that were stolen from them. Also Reaganomics was funded by raising our countries debt ceiling 17 SEVENTEEN times in his eight years in office. Nobody EVER has raised it more than once or none. This is why we have bond measures on our ballots' for our kids and grandkids to pay for Reaganomics. How emba😠rassing we keep putting in tRUMP's real estate mongrel's why are we voting in demonic evil thieves, liars, & cheats. If one then all three. This was a great movie. I really related to it myself, as the mother of a son with a mental health issue-now 27, and still not addressed or treated because he's resistant. He just isolates. I related to seeing the little boy so full of promise and innocence, the signs of the little boy who might be grappling with escalating issues related to anxiety, darkening into more severe symptoms and not knowing what to do. I related to the stress of the family, the other kids being badly affected, the mother being blamed for causing the problems because she's "spoiling" or not disciplining the child enough. The sad part was seeing how the boy is helped by the residential facility that costs "six figures" and how this isn't really addressed. The family shown seems to be able to manage that cost, and that's not really relatable I think for most of us in this country. We aren't going to be able to send our kids to a posh therapeutic environment that really makes a difference and that's the tragedy.

in my youth i was very smart but withdrawn from other kids...mostly due to bullying....but who knows maybe all the bullying and isolation brought on mental illness....the teachers saw and did nothing...it was never addressed. I grew up only feeling safe in my little apartment..i never finished college and i work a dead end job. Please seek whatever outlet you can for your son and don't give up on him....he isolates because all they do is pill you up ....i find it odd not one doctor in this movie suggested doing an MRI on his brain ...and doctors today don't..where is the proof that someone has Bi polar or anxiety. Based off a feeling? but I've gone into the hospital saying i *feel* confused, fatigued all day and i get turned away ....the entire system wants us sick .

  • @uwsupergirl

    @uwsupergirl

    Жыл бұрын

@@Mrexcuses91 They either want you sick, or they just don't care. There's literally no truly good options for people with mental illness because it's automatically "you need medication". While I am for medication in certain circumstances IF a person feels it's right for them, I am absolutely against that being a solution across the board. I once read an article that I wish I had saved because I can't find it now- it was out of the Netherlands, and it was about a "novel" approach to mental health treatment being just radical acceptance of a person as they are, and validating them as people, but also helping with symptoms and talk therapy to challenge paranoid ideation, and false beliefs. One thing my son struggles with a lot is people saying they wish he was the "old" person he had been before he spiraled into his mental illness in his teens. Most mentally ill people know they aren't accepted and that's hard for them. So they retreat into themselves even further. The only thing I can tell you is to try to get a therapist that you can talk to and keep going. Because long term, that is something that can help to have someone to give you unconditional positive regard. Look for someone who takes a multi-faceted approach and has studied schema therapy by Jeffrey Young. I'm still trying to get my son to therapy and it's almost impossible to get him out of the house. But I will never stop trying.

I grew up with a mother who first diagnosed with mental illness in 1971-72. I am writing this before I watch the movie after having read other comments. I can speak from the eyes of a child and an adult who grew up with so many different dynamics that are woven through the lives of individuals and their families and loved ones who suffer from mental illness. The stigma from diagnoses and social rejection is getting better but needs to disappear entirely. Society needs to be all inclusive and quit using the word CRAZY to describe people who need help, hope, love and healing. M y mother was very fortunate to have had a loving, caring family as well as access to world class psychiatric help early on when the field was rapidly expanding and meds beside thorzine became available. Born in 1945, she lived until 2021 which in itself is amazing looking at the statistics of average life span of someone with mental illness much less taking into account the severity that she was afflicted.

I have not been able to keep jobs or friends. The shame and loneleness after "episodes" is just as hard. Especially when all along I knew it was not my fault, but blame came constantly from my family. Difficult family dynamic for my life. They were my only constants, I wanted to feel loved and accepted by them. That never happened. They never understood me enough. Glad when people find a way to cope. I was not one of them . I isolate on purpose now. I was not one of the lucky ones to get any brain balance.

I recognized his anxiety from the first moment he froze before going on stage. It's not bipolar .. it's fear of being embarrassed because you're not smart or talented enough .. of having your weaknesses exposed .. of not being like all the other kids .. lagging behind .. not understanding the lessons .. the cure is finding that one thing the kid is interested in .. science, music, animals, mountain climbing .. something he can delve into that has nothing to do with competition with others .. something he can dig his teeth into ... something he can do for hours on end .. even into the night. No limitations .. no restrictions. Like Akiana (the brilliant painter) .. she was allowed to follow her passion and it led her to the road she needed to travel in order to find fulfillment. Medications are not the answer.

I agree mess aren't the answer, but things aren't as clear cut as you seem to think, mental illness is different in each person, and the way through is different for each family. What works for one person or family might now work with another, each brain is unique in how it functions. I wish it were as clear cut as just finding the one thing that's going to grab the sufferer and make them able to cope with life.

We saw one aide teasing a young boy who was mentally challenged & I regret not reporting it. We finally got him out with the help of his psychiatrist, got him off the medications & onto a program with a naturopathic Dr. & he made great progress. That was years ago. He currently has a steady job after getting a business degree. He had much suport & help along the way. Read up on those meds, they have side-effects & there are alternative treatments

We have a teen son. We adopted him when he was a 2 day old newborn. We were told by a pediatrician that we had hired on a consultation basis way before our son cam to us, that we should hope we get a boy rather than a girl because we are older parents. He told us, in general, that boys are harder when they are young and get easier as they get older. And that girls are the complete opposite. Our son was an Angel as a baby, a toddler and an adolescent. He has always been a thoughtful, caring, loving, respectful child. Then when he went into junior high, everything changed. He became nervous, suffered from insomnia, was being bullied by schoolmates for being overweight (something that happened during the Covidlockdown, when he became home schooled and Little League and Soccer were cancelled as he turned 12. Within 4 months of being bullied, he lost the extra weight by eating healthier and less. His sports resumed. He lost nearly 50 lbs in that 4 month period. We transferred him into another school away from his bullies (even though he lost the weight, the bullying continued because bullies will always find and latch onto the sensitive kids like our son). We live in a small community and he is still afraid of these bullies. He is a kind, emotionally sensitive kid, that can make friends easily, but the experience at his previous school has made him apprehensive to make new friends (although he's had 3 girlfriends in the last year..the current being in a big city many miles away and he is only able to see her once every couple months when we can drive him to meet up with her and her mom for lunch, a 2 hour drive each way. My husband and I are hoping he is just going through a teenage cycle, because he takes his frustrations on us. Lately, a nice conversation turns into an argument. He is an over thinker, obsessing about things way too much. He is still having sleep issues. I suggested he go see a therapist a long time ago. He fought me on this issue. Only recently has agreed to go see someone. I just got the approval and a referral from our health insurance and will be making an appointment tomorrow for him to see someone, His Godparents, our best friends, are a High School guidance counselor and her husband, a child therapist. They both believe he is just going through a teenage rebellion, but are glad that he has agreed to go and speak to someone (I wish he could go talk to his Godfather, but it would be a conflict of interest, being that they are like family to us). We know little to nothing about his biological parents. His birth mom came into the adoption system late in her pregnancy. We had no preference, boy or girl, any race...all we asked for was a healthy baby as being older parents (both my husband and I were 50 years old when we adopted him) it would be too difficult to take care of a handicapped child. And that's what we got. A healthy baby boy born from a healthy 21 year old birthmom who did not drink or do drugs. And being that she is a Catholic, abortion never entered her head. We are so glad that her unselfish act allowed us to be parents after many years of fertility treatments and numerous disappointments. She will always be our hero (heroine?). Our son has recently expressed a want to meet his birthmom when he turns 18. And I will do everything in my power to reunite him with her. I believe he has enough room in his heart for two moms and when I pass I will go knowing he has his birthmom and his Godparents who will be there for him.

Excellent Movie, I was searching for some info on this illness to understand my son better but it's hard to get support and help from others who doesn't know or have the patience to know. But education is most likely needed on this topic for a better understanding of it so help can be given before it escalates to the point of hopelessness and even no return. Blessings to this scrip writer. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. I'm still struggling to find and decide for some physical help from somewhere soon.

More people should be aware of mental illnesses, this is such a normal thing for people and it’s not talked about much. Most people swallow feelings or put them off, and get no help. Or they get made fun of for having a mental problem. Almost everyone suffers with some type of illness, and it needs to be talked about more in education! So people don’t feel judged or different. And people know how to help/handle these problems.

My son - this is our story too, he has bipolar, went to residential treatment, I even had cancer, but NO real support! Ex-husband has his issues. God the only thing that helped me through, not a simple reply. It has and is exhausting to be his mother.
