It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZread experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 2007 Volkswagen Golf Plus 1.4 Luna, I struggle up some hills in Somerset, find four overheard storage compartments in a row, demonstrate a trip to Ikea, do not show too much rust and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

I don't usually prefer VW models but this was an excellent review of what is clearly a very practical car.

It's ridiculously practical, sir, and is also comfortable, even if it will need to be replaced at some stage.

This car seems to be a peculiar fusion of hatchback and wagon with all the space. Not sure if it was sold in New Zealand but it works! Thanks again.

Yes, I think that is what Volkswagen intended, but it never sold in large numbers over here, really.

I really like these and still do. Unfortunately when I was looking for one all I could find was black pump powered examples, so well done for finding a 1.4 petrol. That 1.4 might not be the quickest in the world, but as seen here it's a reliable motor that can do high mileage. Another excellent review.

Yes, it's a bit underpowered, to be honest, but it shows at least if look after one of these, then they can do high mileage. Thank you again for watching, sir!

I use to have a golf plus 1.9 TDI but in SE spec so I got all electric windows and picnic tables in back also leather steering wheel and had draws under front seats as well and looks like its starting to rust where mine did as well and that the front arches and the tailgate and on mine the seals whent as well

As usual, we will avoid talking about the engine, sir, but otherwise yes, the rust is in the usual places for one of these. The seals seem OK from what I understand. The SE was slightly better equipped than this one, I think.

I had a 2005 1.9 TDI Golf Plus SE. I found it very economical and comfortable for my driving needs. I had a problem with the clutch around 18k miles what VW sorted out on warranty at the time. If I remember rightly they had to replace the clutch on it. The dealership at the time said there was a batch of faulty clutches what that car had fitted. (It used to judder when cold but soon as it warmed up it went away). Would I have another one now for a cheap run about? Yes I would if could find a reasonable mileage one.

We will avoid mentioning the engine, sir, as is usual for the channel, but it does seem comfortable and the practicality is absolutely without question. The one you had probably had a dual mass flywheel in it, and these are notorious for going wrong at higher mileages in Volkswagens of the era. Just as well that clutch was replaced, must have been a bit annoying! Thank you for watching once again.

Oh we did, sir! There's a review on the RAC website from 2007-8 which has a video of a UK specification one on a road test. We just didn't call it the Cross Golf at the time! I think we used the trim level Dune instead.

Thanks for this interesting video. Three of my workmates own mid 2000s Volkswagens! 1.4 an interesting engine size, don't you think? Space is amazing! Did you say rust? You would get heaps of 2007 Volkswagens in New Zealand still in excellent condition. As a random aside have you considered doing a doco on the cars of Cracker? Saw an episode yesterday from 1993...Plenty of Cavaliers and a FWD Rover Police Car!

The 1.4 was used in all sorts of different Volkswagen Group products at the time, including Seats, Skodas and other Volkswagens. A bit underpowered for this car, but reasonably economical from what I gather. Yes, Golf Mark Vs and Golf Pluses are prone to rust over here. Never seen Cracker myself...
