    My only question is if it is necessary to drain excess fluid at 15:50

  • @PMitchell106

    @PMitchell106

    That's how you set the proper level of the fluid, otherwise, it may be overfilled. There is no way to accurately measure everything that comes out because of the way the filter housing is mounted, and the amount of fluid drained may not be consistent from one service to the next, depending on how the vehicle was lifted and other factors. There is also no guarantee that the previous fill was to the correct level. Since the transmission fluid expands a lot with temperature, the transmission needs to reach operating temperature and be on a level surface to be measured properly.

    @Breeze210 HI I would change the cvt asap! If it never changed what you do is drained the cvt fluid and fill with whatever amount you drained. That's what I did, i got about 2.2 quarts out and filled back with same fresh 2.2 quarts Nissan (NS3 cvt). Don't use any other cvt fluid brand, stay with genuine. If you want to change the filter, make sure you also save how much you drained in that area and add to your main fill.

    Thanks for the tutorial, that was very helpful. I tried my best to get the cap for the filler tube out from the top, but I just couldn't get it, the plastic was all messed up. Since the fender well was out anyway, it was super easy to just take out the tube from the bottom (one 10mm bolt only), and then remove the cap, and put it back.

    Thanks for your video! I just completed this today. The hardest part was getting that dumb cap off the filler tube so that I could REFILL the fluid!!! 😅 Like the person you got that car from, I was told the transmission was going, and I needed to replace. (Mind you, we had no codes, just some loss of power and being sluggish) We’re only at 87k miles! But, the transmission fluid had never been changed. What a difference, nice and smooth again now, and hopefully plenty more life.😃

    These CVT’s are horrible and you might need a new transmission. Changing the fluid will not magically fix it, just might prolong it a little longer. Now if you just have dirty fluid and your mechanic told you that you need a new transmission then that’s a bad mechanic

    Very informative and right on point. This exactly matches my 2017 Nissan Versa SV vehicle. I have 172,172 miles on it; and the previous owner was Hertz (car rental company). Don't know if the CVT Transmission filter OR fluid has ever been previously changed. Local Transmission Shop quoted $672.58 for simply changing the fluid and filter (they said they will NOT flush the system). I've obtained my FILTER & GASKET direct from Nissan for $26.20; and 5 quarts of Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic A/T Fluid Multi-Vehicle MAXLIFED1 for CVT transmissions specifically shows it's for Nissan CVT NS-3 for $49.80. Because of rain, I'll be performing this task next week.

    I do strongly believe that the round filter is doing most of the filtering. I do not believe for even a second that the screen can catch all of the debris that causes problems. Look at Volkswagen with their 09G transmission, I had one and know that the filter is just a screen. They also have a ton of valve body problems with those. My only guess is that SOMETHING is making its way through that screen and it gets stuck in the valve body and the solenoids become abrasive from that debris and wear the valve body out very slowly over time as the solenoids actuate. Now I realize that a CVT is different. It would have less parts likely to cause debris to get in the fluid. That is far fewer clutches. I wonder how many CVT failures are the result of not changing that round filter? I just have to wonder because some people think that little things like that don't make a difference. Odds are they may be stuck on the side of the highway one day with a neglected CVT. This isn't the 1960s any more, our cars are a lot more complex than that these days and it just gets worse!

    Easy way to get the 'dipstick' filler cap off was if you look at the bottom the the filler tube there is a 10mm bolt....remove that and pull the filler tube up and out. Then you can work on removing the filler cap outside of the car where it's easier, or just fill the fluid where you removed the filler tube and then reinstall the tube. Me personally, I removed the cap outside of the car and then reinstalled the filler tube to use as a funnel extension as I could not reach with my funnel all the way to the bottom of the dipstick tube where I originally pulled out the dipstick tube! Walmart sells a clear transmission filler tube for a bit over $4 that would have worked though.....hope this helps! I know it will help my knuckles from getting scraped up next time as I won't try and pry the release tab on the filler cap while the tube is still mounted to the trans!

    As the pinned comment says, this is by far the most comprehensive video. After a lifetime of being intimidated by the CVT, I feel like I can take it on. I do have one question raised by the local dealerships here in PR: does the transmission need to be reprogrammed after every flush or are they just trying to get more money out of me? I was told by two techs that it's essential, stating that without it the transmission just won't work as it's supposed to. But I've been researching for hours and have found nothing to back this claim up. Now I'm not sure if I want to do the change myself (which I feel I can) or just pay the $300+ in order to avoid giving my wife ammo if anything goes sideways 😄.

    I've paid Wilson motor Nissan in Logan Utah to service the transmission in my 2016 Sentra, five times. I just found out they didn't change the paper filter once. The last few times they charged $300.00. I'm pissed. I just had it serviced two weeks ago. I ordered the paper filter today along with a quart of Nissan cvt fluid. I'm changing the filter tomorrow. I have 210,300 miles on it. I may need to replace the transmission now. I feel betrayed by the dealership.

    I need help. I have changed the fluid in the car change the stepper motor three times already because it was throwing a code saying the stepper motor was bad transmission still doesn't want to shift the way it's supposed to start slippin you have to let off the gas for it to keep going also the transmission is under a lot of pressure there has to be something clogged somewhere I've already cleaned out the oil cooler and the valve body does anybody know why this transmission should be under so much pressure you run it for 10 minutes and pull the dipstick out and it just explodes with fluid same with the oil pan

    An LPG space heater behind the bumper cover, (obviously when it's off the car), will make most of the plastic return to its original shape. Thermoplastic memory, or something. CVTs - if you're going to change the fluid, do the damn filters, as you have! Easy - just lots of bolts. Why wouldn't you?

    Hi all! Any of you know a mechanic in Reno/Sacramento/Truckee/Tahoe area that can repair my 2015 Versa Note's CVT? The CVT is slipping. Its fluid is full but dark. OR, is there a chance that just replacing fluid and filter could stop the slippage?! Local dealer and all mechanics I've found around me so far say they only replace transmission, not repair it, even if it just needs a new belt or new pump control valve. I see posts from mechanics around the country that say it's not so hard to repair these transmissions in many cases, but I can't find anyone yet with that savvy in my area. Thanks in advance.

    I'm so angry that the Nissan service manual doesn't even mention the upper cartridge filter on the CVT. When I finally discovered it, and changed mine (at 91K Miles) it was really really filthy and clogged. Before changing it, the trans temp would get really hot (220 F) (I installed a temp gauge) AND it would downshift kind of funny on hills, in so far as the RPM would remain really high when coasting downhill, as if it was hanging in a low gear while coasting. AFTER getting that dirty plugged filter out, the shifting issue went away and the shifting from start was smooth as butter, moreover the fluid temp never goes above 205 now. Even with 4 people in the car, at freeway speeds (which used to send the temp to the 220-225 area) it runs cool as a cucumber. Had I known this, I'd have changed mine every 30K miles, seeing they're so cheap. Nissan is truly evil for not putting this filter on the regular service plan. EVIL! I'm sure I did irreparable wear to my trans running it so hot and straining the valve train by restricting the fluid flow with that plugged filter. GRRRRRR.
