At my normal driving rate, it would take 9 years to hit 30K miles, so I'm thinking every 3 years or 30K miles change the CVT fluid, because all auto fluids degrade of time for a variety of reasons. Same reason why I change my oil every 6 months, even though that is only about 1700 miles driven.
Great video. I own (2) Honda’s. A 2017 Civic EXT and a 2016 Accord EX-L V6. I changed the Civics transmission fluid out at 48k. I used Amsoil. It cost a little more but has better heat tolerance than the Honda brand. I definitely felt the difference after the change. I do have a question. Do you recommend changing the 2 filters O rings and pan gasket? If so at what intervals?
@RBTheMechanic

I also use Amsoil CVT fluid in my 2016 HR-V but I change it at 30K miles. This transmission has presented no problems at all since I bought the car new. There was a recall in which Honda checked the transmission for any damage, then re-programmed the software and extended the warranty on it to 150K miles. Love it!

Excellent info, thanks. I was considering a 2024 Honda HRV to replace my 2012 Honda Fit Sport, but I’ll either have some repairs done on it or purchase a Mazda CX-5 with geared automatic. I’ll never trust any CVT.

I think CVT is OK for light use in a passenger car and the fluid is changed regularly. However, the regular automatic transmissions are much more durable and reliable. From what I've read and experienced, as long as the fluid is changed regularly with quality full synthetic ATF, the filter will not need to be changed. However, if you don't know the transmission's history, I would definitely change the filter. This is what I've done and I've never had a problem. @@jonboz7585

2019 civic coupe ex-t. I changed mine at 20,000 miles, and again at 40,000. Almost at 60,000 now. Honda guys are going to go crazy...but i use castrol cvt fluid. I also use a cvt conditioner. At 60,000 ill do both filters, and clean up the pan etc. Also adding a cvt cooler come spring time. Its so cold where i live i really dont see the point right now. Ive always been a fan of castrol products. I use their oil, brake fluid, now transmission fluid. I like to keep up on my car. Maybe its overkill, but i do plugs once a year, air filter 2x a year, change my oil every 3500 miles. Clean the maf 4x a year. Clean the throttle body every spring and late fall. Keep my car super clean and protected. Fluid film black undercoating every fall. Ceramic coating for the paint, then lots of wax over that. Every time i wash it i dry with a large soft microfiber towel and tec582. All season mats to keep moister away from the carpets and rusting out those areas. I keep damp rid containers in the trunk, and one under the seat. Im sure the transmission wont make it past 250,000 but i want to try. I might buy a spare from a lower mileage car just to have. Theyre only around $700 right now. Plus I save by doing my own work. Be nice just to have it before prices go up once all these CVTs start to fail in the 10th gens from people being stupid.

@@RBTheMechanic I figure it's not hurting anything. Oh and when I switched over to Castrol I made sure to do several drain and fills to get all the OEM hcf-2 out. I contacted Castrol and that was their recommendation anyway. I know I do things way too early, I just enjoy it. Thinks like plugs and filters aren't that expensive, especially from Rockauto. Anything to keep this car going. I always wanted the coupe, and when I finally got one I told myself I would do everything I can to keep it looking and running like new that I could. Just waiting for my injectors to go out lol. I run too tier 93 octane , and I'm always tossing in FIC. If the cleaner is actually working we'll see. Same with my crc intake valve and turbo cleaner. It’s all about luck. For example I still have my 2010 Dodge Caliber SXT that I got back in 2012. It currently has almost 130k miles. Original transmission and never had an oil change (for the cvts back then the manufacturer said the oil should last at least the complete life service of the transmission). However, for having 130k miles on it and never changed the oil, it has worked pretty well. I think this Jatco on my caliber was one of a kind. Hope it gets to 200k someday
