Nailed it. These transmissions need regular fluid changes. The fluid has rubber in it and keeps the pulley from slipping. When the fluid wears out the metal belt slips on the pulleys.

Good explanation! However the truth is is you don’t drive aggressively AND change your fluid every 15-20k miles then these transmissions will last for 200k+. The problem is most of the damage occurs at initial acceleration and that creates a lot of heat which degrades everything inside including the fluid. Cvt are not meant to be driven hard. So ease up on the gas pedal when accelerating.

Very Nice Job in explaining a CVT Transmission quickly and thoroughly! I have to agree with you on the heat of the fluid did damage to the clutch pack. It looked burnt and so did the case from the back side before you split the cases. I don't know how much fluid the CVT trans holds but anything under $100 for 20,000 miles would be fine! I remembered once I went on holiday to mountain resort. I should have broken CVT when parking car full of luggages and extra weights of stuffs on the hill resort but I didn’t. I luckily used handbrake first before putting to park gear. The KZread mechanic is my awesome teacher. Thank them a lot.

My ex wife has a 2019 nissan with a bad tranny. Dropped the oil pan and metal was in the pan. This guy has the best video i have seen with info on this cvt tranny. Very well explained.

Me too. 2015 mitsu, jatco. Talk about stressin out . Its been my only car for work and bought it few months ago and even then had a whining in the torque converter. The dealer wont help and warranty covered 70% of it, was stuck with a car payment , mechanic costs and no way to work. Gettin a reman cvt installed , hopefully with regular changes it will go another 70000

Great explanation....i had a 2013 sold it with 63000 milles no problem really comfortable car Currently have a 2014 pathfinder platinum wich come from factory with a transmission cooler is at 62000 milles it jerks at 20mph if the rmp is in the low end if is higher rpm it does not do it thinking on replacing valve body it drives good other then that i even tow with it ...and also have a 2016 73000milles nissan just installed a new cvt under warranty

Thanks for the work and explaining it. I think the oil cooler is not efficient enough for this transmission. It's either the oil should go through radiator, or coolant has to flew inside the transmission. The actual small heat exchanger won't be able to remove heat efficiently from the oil.

I changed it first at 120,000 miles, then 200,000 and 270,000 miles it has 293,000 miles on it now. All I do is I buy original Nissan CVT fluid and bring it to Valvoline. They have a CVT flush for $199 that takes all the dirty fluid out, then cycles the new one 3-4 times and filter more dirt out. After the flush the CVT runs strong and does not slip anymore.

Thanks the break down of the cvt. Ive always suspected that the coolers size and efficiency was to blame. Simple parts for them to have their part supplier upgrade. But they choose not to .....to knock you over the head for 8-10k at dealer ship. Id take the the interchiller cooler set up from q50 3.0t and modify for the Maxima and Altimas. And change fluid every 9mos. Amsoil cvt trans fluid as well. Suspect Nissan made fluid to fail suddenly as well lol it

I have a 2016 Altima that has the CVT8 and there is nothing wrong with these CVT's. Yes they have issues like most other transmissions but if you take care of them they will last. Like @Boss Automotive said, heat is the biggest issue. Next would probably be that Pump Flow Control Valve which I think is due to the fluid breaking down due to the overheating issue. Nissan uses this fluid deterioration number to determine when to change the fluid. This number increases whenever the fluid goes over 90°C. You can use a ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 scanner along with the CVTz50 app to monitor temps, pressures, and see the codes. Also install an aftermarket trans cooler to keep temps under 90°C when it's hot. I used a Hayden cooler. Another thing is to do a D&R on the CVT fluid at minimum 30k miles. I will be doing mine annually which is about 20k like Boss suggests. Oh, and DON'T drive it like an ape! :) I drive pretty aggressive and have had 0 issues since adding the cooler and changing fluid every 20k. I also quit using the NS-3 and switched to Castrol CVT fluid as it is NS-3 rated, works great. There own TSB (NTB15-084b) says "NS-3 CVT fluid or equivalent", look it up. Do this at your own risk however. Great video, I am about to install a transmission cooler on my altima 2008, I really hope it helps and I rather change the oil every 2000 miles, why not, it cost only about 20 dollars if you do it yourself.

I purchased an new 09 Sentra By the grace of God it had 200,000 miles on original cvt. It went into limp mode three times in 11 years we did the trans cvt maintenance every 30000 sold it last year for $900 good riddance never get any type of CVT garbage.

You must connect up an auxiliary transmission cooler in front of radiator.The factory units are built into the Rad and are pitifully small.Heat kills the units,so get the unit to pull down transmission operating temperatures.One of the best transmission experts near me told me,that heat kills the bulk of cvts or traditional autos

That was a really good simple explanation. Question... is this the same issue with all other CVTs? I have friends with Ford Fusions and they needed a new transmission between 50k-65k miles. So I'm currently looking for a car without a CVT.

The Ford CFT30 (ZF import crap) is a piece of junk. I worked for a transmission remanufacturer and was tasked with bringing the Ford CVT line to a close. They were done with the hassle and Ford has effectively wiped their hands of it. You can't even find parts for it anymore.

I should’ve bought the KIA Soul. Our 2011 Cube trans-CVT rebuilt cost $3500. Never again any type of CVT garbage. Also, it was serviced every 30,000 miles and failed at 106,000 no warranty was available for 2011. Too late now but the old CVT was shifting fine & reverse with a rumbling sound coming from the bottom of cvt. This makes me believe it was a bearing but all trans shops & Nissan dealer said it was a complete failure? So they can sell you a rebuilt big bucks?

Great video. I am replacing the CVT valve assembly on a 2009 Nissan Murano. The new step motor rod is not extended as far as the old step motor rod. There is a control arm hook that needs to be connected from one end to the step motor rod and on the other hand to a level inside the transmission. I want to make sure that once I install the CVT valve assembly, the other end of the control arm hook is connected to the level inside the transmission. Do I need to power the step motor to extend the threaded rod so that the control arm can connect to the level inside the transmission? or the car computer will reset the step motor rod automatically ?

Thanks, the stepper motor connects to ratio control valve arm, I don’t remember it being any adjustment .

2012 rogue, CVT sudden drop of rpm and acceleration while driving then kicks back up. Only does it on initial take off and especially on an incline. Fluid change helps for about 150 miles and issue comes back. No check engine lights or codes. 59k on rogue but been doing it since around 35k. Fluid change did get rid of awful whine noise when hot. Nissan says nothing wrong. I disagree since I have two other nissan’s with similar CVT and they have no issues. Any suggestions. My thought is high pressure release valve on pump since if you lightly accelerate and slowly let off the gas peddle it doesn’t act up.

If transmission has too much fluid it will whine, when hot. When it whine it’s mostly because the fluid is aerated, there’s a special way to check the fluid it’s base on the temperature

Some slipping are normal, I don’t think to the extent where the engine flare. Check fluid level, I have had one where one of the pulley was getting stuck

A nissan versa with 135k miles on it and i dont really know when was the last time the trans oil was changed but the engine oil was low and pretty dirty so im guessing the trans oil hasnt been touched at all what do yall think should i leave it alone until it gives me problmes or change it now?

Change trans fluid and filter if it has one.

So every 5th oil change change the cvt fluid? How frequently do the filters get changed? Is there an additive. That can be added to the fluid to help lubricate and keep the temp down? Should an external fluid cooler be added to help keep the fluid cooler?

I wouldn’t used any additive, make sure you used Nissan NS fluid. External cooler dose help a lot. I would change the fluid ones a year.

It seems to run and shift fine.. however I got a transmission code I forget what it is.. the only light on the dash I’m getting is trac control. It’s confusing but should I be concerned? Any thoughts. This issue has been going on for over 6months without any noticeable changes. I look forward to reply.

Save your wallet fix the code & sell car! My son has an 2011 Cube $3500 for rebuilt transmission. So far at 40,000 it’s good no problems but I don’t trust it. failure is Eminent get rid of it before Trans fails.

Which Nissan vehicle is this CVT from? I have a 2014 Murano LE AWD. The transmission started acting up today. It wasn't engaging from a full stop properly but at highway speeds it was running okay. I think it may have gotten too hot as it was pretty hot today.

I have a question on this type of transmission(cvt) I recently got a code p2765(input turbine speed sensor B circuit. I had it towed to Nissan and they told me I need a transmission. They couldn’t tell me why I need it, just that when ever they get that code. That indicates that the transmission is bad and need replacement. I brought the car used and first thing I changed was the engine oil and transmission oil and filter, Until one day this week I drove to do my shopping and some errands. Parked the car and like 4 hour later I’m heading out again. The vehicle started but it won’t grab any gear. Before this I didn’t get no noise, check engine light, lost of power. For what I read on Google and seen on KZread. It’s a input speed sensor. I’m just wondering what is you opinion on this matter.

About 3400 to 5000 replacement for Nissan Rogue depending on the mileage of the replacement. If you are lucky you may only need a valve body replacement.

Best option is to replace with a new transmission. I would check with the Nissan dealer, the is a lot of recalls on the rogue

It's suspected that a problem with the vehicle's cooling system is making the CVT transmission unreasonably sensitive to heat. The temperature of the cars transmission fluid is controlled by a small cooler as opposed to a radiator and it's not regulating the temperature of the fluid responsible for lubricating the parts in the transmission. Should a car overheat and go into "fluid protection mode" transmission performance will be reduced and as a result the driver may experience trouble accelerating, vehicle shaking or jerking and or complete failure of the CVT. Is a possible solution more frequent coolant changes? I'm doing that to just play it safe. What do you think?

Here is my experience: I purchased a 2015 Nissan Murano new in July 2015. My CVT transmission failed and was replaced under warranty by Nissan in June 2019 at 52,000 miles. Today 11-29-21, at 62,100 miles, my transmission failed again due to the transmission oil/cooler/radiator assembly failing to cause the cooling fluid and the transmission fluid to mix, resulting in having to replace the Transmission, Radiator, and associated assemblies for a cost to me of approximately $6,700! Based on my research, this is a known issue and has not been elevated to protect consumers. Interestingly when speaking with Nissan they are not sure why I was not included in the class-action suit extending my warranty. I do not drive aggressively and have all required services completed and still have had two CVT failures.

@@amkjr85 Yes, it was. All the required services have been completed and I picked up my repaired Murano today. Based on other posts I believe it will be important to have the transmission flushed every 20 to 30K instead of the recommended 50 to 60K. I will also only bring it to the dealership for service from now on. Other service providers are not doing anything wrong but based on my and others' experience the Nissans have to be worked on by technicians who know the CVT limitations and how to service the vehicle based on those limitations. On my way home I stopped to get my haircut and I was telling the girl cutting my hair I just picked up my car which required a transmission replacement for the 2nd time at 62,000 miles. She says is it a Nissan? Was it a CVT? She just had her Sentra CVT transmission replaced at 32K Miles and was very knowledgeable about the issue. Talk about a smaller world. She is seeking to get something else because it is still not running right and she doesn't trust the dealership stating now that the CVT is fixed it should be fine.

@@DM-hw4cr Hi and thanks for the question. All service was done at the dealer and because the transmission was replaced at 52K nothing was required before having to replace it again. We did have another service center change out the radiator fluid per the manufacturer's recommendations and was thinking this might be part of the issue but if this is the case Nissan needs to let the entire auto industry know their vehicles can fail if someone uses what is considered to be industry-standard cooling products in their vehicles with a CVT.

Even if you change transmission fluid regularly how does it help with overheating? Because even you travell long journeys still they start limiting your speed to 100mph and stay to that limp mode. What is the remedy for their overheating problems.

My 2012 altima has 133K on its odometer. Never changed the cvt fluid. I am little worried watching all these cvt failure videos. I heard something the if you haven't changed the fluid and it works well after all these miles, it is better not to change the fluid. Is that true?

I looked it up, and said every 30 to 60K the transmission fluid should be changed, I had my 2012 nissan Altima since August 2020, got it from a dealership in Melbourne, and I just had my transmission fluid changed just a couple of days ago, luckily for me I found out the CVT in my vehicle was still brand new in good condition, at least the guys at AAMCO told me, like a newer cvt model, still good thing I decided to get the fluid changed, but I was assuming you were supposed to have it changed every 6 months, so I thought!
