Nissan CVT FAIL @107k miles! (P1778)

BOOM, another Nissan with major CVT problems!
This 2012 Nissan Rogue at 107k miles refuses to shift to higher gear ratios.
Feels like the transmission is slipping severely when torque is applied.
Several codes are set, but the P1778-Step Motor Failure comes back instantly.
Enjoy!
Ivan

Even a load of fire wood (that I would never do again). Tell the truth I cant even count the amount of times Ive pulled with this car. To pick up couches, washing machine, etc. my utility trailer is like 1,300lbs itself. Recently i pulled my quad on my utility trailer from ny to ga. no issues. i keep the fluid and filter changed. Im due for another full service this time i found out about the paper filter and ordered it. I have 185,000. Change the step motor and put new oil in - it will run fine, unless Ivan didn't tell us everything the owner shared about the CVT behavior a bit before, before the issue. The job is labor intensive and quite messy - on most CVT the stepper motor is not accessible without removing the valve-body. I'm not a mechanic and took me 5h to do that + it took me 2h extra to find on the web witch bolts to remove in order to get the valve-body out. Ivan is a master, plus he has the tools and probably his alldata subscription will give him the bolts location in a jiffy.

I have a 2011 nissan maxima with 339000 km, original owner, I maintain the car very well and the p1778 code just came on couple of weeks ago. I took the car to nissan to diagnose it and they told me I need a new transmission and that it can't be rebuild period. I then took it to a Japanese transmission and auto part shop and they told me that the transmission can be rebuild. So not sure who's telling the truth from who's lying but it's crazy of the lack of information for these type of transmission. Seem like everyone is learning as they go along but these transmission been around for a while now. My car doesn't slip, it goes into all the gears but I notice once I go on any trip around 60 plus km and at a high rate of speed (140km to be exact lol), I start to feel the transmission doesn't change as smoothly. Almost feels like it goes into limp mode. But who knows lol, but I guess I should be thankful that my transmission lasted this long comparing to 107k miles

The transmission itself and the gears are still good, it's just that the stepper motor is mechanically faulty and not shifting when told to by the tcm. Drop the transmission pan and filter. Cooling fan was not working and potentially overheating the transmission. Good news, Nissan extended the Pathfinder transmission warranty to 84k miles and prorated coverage for another 30k miles. Ended up only paying $2.5k to get the transmission replaced with Nissan paying for half of it. So maybe another 100k miles on the car? Kudos to Nissan. Actually, any transmission can be killed in this environment if they are always run in regular "D" mode. They should be be downshifted at least one gear, put in "Sport Mode," or put in "D3" in they are a regular transmission. Same goes if you are driving around town at under 35mph. Especially if the town is hilly. Police around the country figured this out because when they ran regular "D" mode in their police cars driving around town constantly, it would destroy their transmissions. They solved this issue by issuing orders to use "D3" all the time unless they were on the highway.

Jatco was good at building regular conventional Automatic transmissions and transaxles. Just not CVT’s. I do agree that the Jatco CVT is probably the worst transaxle on the planet currently in recent automotive history. Regular automatic transmissions are more solid mechanically than that piece of crap. That Jatco CVT has a very weak belt in it which is very weak to heat. If that belt breaks I think Nissan recommends that you replace the whole unit than repairing it. Most transmission shops wouldn’t want to rebuild those CVTs. Both regular manual and automatic transmissions are way more durable than CVT’s by the look of the mechanicals. A couple of old school automatic transmissions that will beat this Jatco CVT by a long shot and in the long run will be these legendary models such as the Ford C6, Mopar Torqueflite 727, and GM THM-400 and these are gods in strength compared to the Jatco CVT.

The Toyota E-CVTs are not ones you have to worry about, they do in fact not have belts or adjustable pullies and are very reliable. They work way different using planetary gearsets, the torque of the engine and the torque of the electric motor to vary ratios. They are very reliable as they are mechanically very simple, extremely robust. No slipping parts at all, barely any parts to wear. Honda's CVTs are good too. Belt CVTs are the problem, especially poorly built ones like Nissan's crappy unit.

Another type of transmission well known for issues, giving a bad reputation to a very well established automaker, is the Ford Powershift, dual clutch transmission, used in the ford fiesta and ford focus. A year and a half ago the clutch pack burned up in my 2016 Ford focus se, at 66k miles, fortunate enough to have purchased the service protection plan at the dealership. Whereas before that car, i had a 2013 ford focus se, exact same car and engine and transmission, had 76k miles on it and no issues whatsoever, until a suspected intoxicated driver ran a stop sign and slammed into me, throwing the car across the roadway into a chain link fence and into some pinetrees in a residential back yard. I can say ford makes very safe vehicles though, they had to use the jaws of life to extract me from the wreckage, and only had a few scrapes and cuts and some abrasions, most likely caused by the side curtain airbags.

Some of the comments are lack of knowledge with these transmissions. First Nissan recommendation is to change the fluid every 30-50k or every two years. Also the CVTs have two filters that need to be changed when servicing them. Yes two filters! Spill and fill is not enough. Also you cannot drag race with a CVT or you will shorten its life. Yes parts fail, although you still have to keep up with the service.

Hey- the older Nissans were cool... 2011 and they began to suck badly. Really it began to go bad in the early 2000s with the Maxima and their issues. I always LOVED how their cars looked... but in the long-run of longevity... not great. My parents used to daily drive a 2006 INFINITI FX45 AWD and it had the brown interior and exterior. It was cool, but it began to have exhaust issues around 90k miles. They also had an 03 Prius which the battery went out shortly after we sold the INFINITI. Both of them are still on the roads in Austin, TX, but it shows how Nissan/Renault/INFINITI's quality has really gone down lately. It's worth mentioning that there are other cars that are WAY, WAY, WAY better than any Nissan, and modern Nissan cars lack some of the tech of their competitors. If you ever really wanted a Rogue to go forever due to the style, your best bet is an attempt to put a ZF transmission in it, and it's not stock. This basically means that the owner of this rogue needs to junk It right now. Sorry, good-looking crossover thing.

I’ve actually heard that NS-2 transmission fluid is garbage. Shell made that fluid and it isn’t even good enough to lubricate the gears and belts in Nissan cvt’s. That is why they changed the fluid in NS-3 which is superior. Amsoil cvt transmission fluid lubricates better and retains its lubrication properties at 100 Celsius and cold temperatures. I have an 08 Altima coupe and I plan on putting in amsoil cvt fluid, I also plan on making a KZread video just as a PSA so people can see how it goes. Update Dec 28/21: I took my 08 Altima to a trusted transmission shop back in may of 2021 and did a CVT fluid drain and fill. The mechanic drained the fluid and cleaned my CVT fluid filter. I replaced the old fluid with Amsoil CVT fluid as well. I've never had issues with my transmission and only did the drain and fill for preventative maintenance. Since the drain and fill, I've had no issues. I plan on doing another drain and fill in May 2022.
