Nirvana - "Sappy" (All Studio Recordings)

Музыка

Every surfaced studio recording of "Sappy" by Nirvana. Includes Kurt Cobain's original home demo and studio recordings performed with the band.
00:00 - 1987, Cobain Residence
02:28 - 1990, Reciprocal Sessions
06:00 - 1990, Smart Sessions
09:35 - 1993, In Utero Sessions
The first version of "Sappy" (originally titled "Sad") was recorded by Cobain in 1987 as an acoustic home demo.
In January 1990, Nirvana recorded "Sappy" at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, WA. This recording features Chad Channing on drums.
Later in April 1990, Nirvana entered Smart Studios in Madison, WI to record another version of "Sappy". This version was intended for the band's second Sub Pop album.
A third studio version was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA in May 1991, but it is not included due to blockage by the record label. This version was intended for Nirvana's second album, Nevermind.
During the February 1993 sessions for In Utero, Nirvana recorded a fourth and final version of "Sappy". With this version, the song was finally released in the same year on the compilation album No Alternative.

My personal favorite is the In Utero sessions one. It would've fit fine on the album, and I think it's wonderfully recorded too. Excellent production. In Utero is my favorite album of Nirvana, and 2nd favorite album of all time, so having more songs for it is amazing. Reciprocal is better than Smart Sessions, more intense vocals and rawer. Maybe the In Utero version draws from this more? The Cobain Residence demo is nice, it's the start of the song after-all. I always love Kurt's acoustic demos, especially on The Elmo Collection fan-boxset. Smart Sessions is too clean for me. Nevermind isn't a bad album, but it's just too clean and reverby. I don't think the vocals for Smart Sessions are nearly intense enough either.

I want to think this is a personal reflection of his mom and dad. Apparently they were not happy and Kurts dad got remarried and Kurts mom gave custody to his dad. Kurt loved his mom the most while his dad was abusive to Kurt, his mom and i think to his sister to. Maybe Kurt wanted to express his own sadness with the song. Especially for the first version in his resodence. Another could be with Courtney. He wanted to love but he got hurt way too many times from her and Kurt wanted to express that version. Kurt was happy with Francis but not with Courtney. Just two good guesses for the songs meaning

I think there were a couple of reasons it didn't make it on In Utero. Six years after it was written, the song was a little bit stale for Kurt. Also, the strumming pattern and song structure was similar enough to rape me so it may have felt too formulaic to have both tracks on the album. I love this track.

Cobain laid down his guitar and walked straight into the control room. ‘I don’t want to do this,’ he insisted. ‘I’m not into this song right now. So let’s leave it.’ Is a pretty good version but Kurt didn't want to do it.

it is great song and all versions are enjoyable, arrangment wise i think chads constant notes on ride were pointless and dave improved it, plus he just has more power, basswise i like it when krist deviates from just playing root notes, i think in utero version has some of it. so i think they made it better.
