It's funny looking back on this now, where Pokemon Go ended up being a shortlived fad and the NX ended up selling like hotcakes.

My theory on that is that NX actually means Nintendo Switch. The X representing "switch".

Funny looking back at this comment. Switch sold great, but is back to moderate sales... just waiting on Smash and Let's Go to kick the sales up again. And shortlived fad as it was: Pokemon Go has had solid spikes of community revivals that still make it more profitable than most apps. Unlike most apps: people seeing people return to Pokemon Go excites them to go back to it, days or weeks at a time. That's something even the most popular apps can't brag about.

Amazing in a good way..? Because I think George said that with a sense of foreboding and pessimism, and implied that the free to play model would compromise the quality and design of at least some of those games.

I think it's the irony of the sentence itself. Like, how can you profit from a product that's given out for free? It's mostly a recent thing the world ha developed into, hence the "What an amazing world we live in".

M.C Zandogg Truthfully, I still don't know what Nintendo's done wrong. Their game library? The Wii U has a lot more worthwhile exclusives than the PS4 and Xbox One put together. Their interface? Sure, a bit clunky, but where it counts, it works. I understand the Wii U was a financial disappointment, but I don't see any reason why it is. Maybe bad marketing, but as George said, the Wii U is fun--and unfortunately, fun doesn't sell nowadays.

Nintendo having success with releasing content on systems they don't own might finally push them towards being a software rather than a hardware company, playing to their strengths as a corporation.

Yes, even though their games are built off their hardware, they should ditch that because their already-popular IP is doing well with a (free) spin-off on mobile phones. Breath of the Wild should be on PS4 because I like Pokemon Go.

I don't think Pokemon Go would be nearly as successful if people didn't have a platform to post screenshots/memes/etc about the game. It really seems like half the time people are posting pictures to Twitter/Facebook and making KZread videos instead of actually playing the damn thing I personally find it's nostalgia bait for the most part and can't see this "game" lasting more than a few months at the most. Also, as someone who hasn't missed a main series game since the originals, I'm just insanely tired of gen1. I guess people getting out and socialising/exersicing never really hurts though

***** Say what you want about it. It's done something that no other game company has ever been able to do, and that's go outside. Moreover, it's fun for most people who aren't socially awkward. It's not that the game mechanics are anything special or anything. It's the social aspect of going out there and being able to interact with other people over a game in a way that people never have before. I made plenty of friends playing this, and actually had quite a bit of fun while playing. It's not for everyone, sure. Especially people who aren't socially capable or unable to go for a walk, but it's something that hasn't been done before.(Yes, different from Ingress.)

  • @ARandomDizzy

    @ARandomDizzy

    8 жыл бұрын

Shitposter-kun Well that is great that you are going outside more and developed social interactions with others. However, as a person who does outside to get fit and improve my body and is an extrovert. I don't see it as some holy achievement. Not all gamers fit the stereotype that they have to be introverts, shut-ins that only communicate within themselves. I always found that to be grating more than anything. I love in depth mechanics and something to sink my teeth into a game. I also love good story telling if mechanics to a game aren't thrilling or game changing. Pokemon Go is simply another bare bones game that is fad of July. How many people will be playing this game three months from now? Maybe six months? What about in a year? Do I want people to be social and speak about their hobbies more? Of course, I do have a degree in Sociology and working on my second. I am probably not the type of person to go around aimlessly searching for something that I could get from biking and walking around my park.

This isn't the first time I've heard this, and it's hard for me to agree, but... it could be true. It might just be their swan song. But maybe the NX will be interesting, innovative, and cheap enough for us to get on board with it. That's highly unlikely though. I think that Nintendo can get themselves out of a bind. They just need to do something really fucking cool.

I haven't played Pokemon since Junior High. I'm currently 30 years old. I've been playing Pokemon Go every day after work. It may be a gimmick, but it's a good gimmick. It's what I needed after several weeks of terrible news from every direction. It's nice to be able to go outside, go for a walk in the park, and meet a dozen strangers. To get to talk to them/smack talk/share tips. It's nice to have that kind of faith in people again.

Love you to George :D Pokemon Go is simple, might lose instalbase after a while and as you said Nintendo might not get that much of what it earns BUT it once again show how much nostalgic power Nintendos IPs still hold. Never realize how much my generation childhood was defined by Pokemon (I was in first grade when the first game came out). They just need to continue nurture their old IPs with good games and get some new IPs together with some third party stuff and a new good console, piece of cake :P

I agree. There simply aren't enough features to keep it engaging for very long. All you do is catch Pokemon and collect items. nothing else.

Well the problem with that is that the hype culture we live in now keeps people moving from one fad to the next week to week. It's a meme culture that sees a short burst of attention then like a firework fades into obscurity. If updates keep people playing it will be at most 3 months.

+sdgundum990 Agreed. I think that of they could incorporate a better battle system and make it more accessible to casual crowd as well as a trade system it would extend the life of this game.

I've played with Pokémon GO! a little bit and so far I'm enjoying it. I don't think we need to worry much about popularity dying down because as far as I know they've only released Pokémon from Gen 1 and 2 thus far, so as long as they keep dishing out more Pokémon every few months or every year (and work on the server problems) we should be hearing about Pokémon GO! for a good long time from now.

Why hasn't Nintendoland been thought of before? Look up "Nintendoland HAWP". Ashly and Anthony Burch did a whole skit about a Nintendoland theme park back in 2012. I already found that amusing when the video game Nintendoland later came out.

Most KZreadrs don't do research. Also, they appeal to the cynical masses by making videos going against punching bag Nintendo, who can never catch a break with people even when they add $7.5 billion with a B to their market share. Pokemon Go basically made up for lost sales in the Wii U and even the Gamecube, plus profit. But it's Nintendo, so let's not congratulate their success and see the positive in how people are enjoying themselves. WHAT IF THEY FAIL? WHAT IF NX FAILS? WHAT IF POKEMON GO IS A FAD? Drink that cynicism up, boys. The trough is full in this video.

I guess you missed the part of this video where Pokemon Go isn't actually Nintendo's success. Nintendo had fuck all to do with Pokemon Go and is only reaping benefits because people *think* they made the game when it was actually Niantic and The Pokemon Company. I mean that was basically the entire point of this video. The fact that the most successful "Nintendo" thing in some time isn't a Nintendo thing, and Nintendo themselves may be likely to keep doing the same stupid crap that put the Wii U in the terrible position it's in right now. But hey, completely miss the point and get pissy because he (probably intentionally) misspelled the name of a shovelware mobile game developer wrong.

This touches on something Tarmark just recently talked about in a video, albeit from a different angle. His thesis was that Nintendo was going down an almost Sega-like route, and their console business kind of relies on NX being a hit. That's not mentioning their lockdown on handheld gaming, of course lol I think they'll keep strong there for a while.
