If they advertised it like this and if the game had cost $60 like every other SNES game, it probably would have sold better, but it still wouldn't have been as big then as it is today--the graphics and its late release also hurt sales too :(

Satire and irony usually go over children's heads, especially in the 90s where that type of humor wasn't as common as it is now (compare with Undertale advertising "same as ever" and "almost no new content" in their Switch trailer).

I consider myself lucky to actually now know the story behind Ness's character. I found out about him like many from the Super Smash Bros. series but never really gave him a chance to see what his story is. Then I decided to play the game, and now it's one of my favorite games of all time!

same here didnt play earthbound till like 2006 on my cousins win xp pc with snes emulator i had seen him in smash bros 64 back in like 2001 but never minded much attention to backstories xd i remember he was the hardest character to get story mode 3 lives medium no continues its up there with the best amen buddy amen

We'll use irony and satirical humor with our ad campaign and say "this game stinks" even though most of our audience that consist of eight year olds won't get the very obvious joke about our ads and won't want their parents to buy the game for them. Oh, and include the players guide and up the price to a not so affordable one for some folk who actually did want the game. That's sure to reel people in and not forget this classic until years later. HAHAHA.

There's a whole extra layer to emulating a game. Those games were designed to run on the 3DS family of systems. Have you seen what it takes to emulate GameCube/Wii games on a PC? The specs are quite high, because it's easy harder to emulate a game versus running it naively.

PKMN Fan I'm expecting a Mother 3 release next year in commemoration of it's 10th anniversary or maybe even an announcement Tuesday. It would be really sweet to see Nintendo and the Mother fans work together publicly, possibly even a Mother 4 e-Shop release with Itoi's consent but maybe I'm thinking about it too much.

Frijolero18 It could take a while to be released here though. You see, unlike the first game, it wasn't already translated into English. Yes, I know the fans translated it and will give it to Nintendo of America for free, but I doubt they'd use it. You see, Sin and Punishment was fan translated, but NST did their own translation. I'd imagine they'd do the same for Mother 3.

I remember back when I was in 5th grade, me and my friends ( 3 guys and a girl) went walking around the city and it reminded me of earthbound too! It brings me back

Thank you so much for releasing this on the VC Nintendo. For years I have regretted not getting to experience this masterpiece back in the 90's, and trying to get an original copy now is quite challenging. Thanks to this, I finally got to play my long lost love, and it was better than I could've hoped it to be. This game has become my number one reason to own a Wii U. This is what the VC is all about. Now about that sequal.

I feel bad for developers of this game. They make a great game, but it's so underrated. Pokemon was inspired by this, but Pokemon ended up being the better, more famous, game

dadanikk Pokemon was not directly inspired by Earthbound (in fact the concept of Pokemon was formed a while before Earthbound's release, I think in 1991), aside from some possible nods to said game (i.e. Dragonite being possibly named after The Bag of Dragonite), but Ape Inc, one of the Earthbound's developers, later became Creatures Inc, which has been and still to this day works on developing the Pokemon games

***** It's more like Pokémon has some similarities. While Ape Inc. would later become Creatures Inc., EarthBound and Pokémon are drastically different. EarthBound isn't underrated. It's a cult classic. It's just that it was a commercial failure. It didn't sell well causing Nintendo to ignore it for the most part.

gamequestions 45 Really, Did you watch the nintendo direct 4/1? Lucas is going to be in smash and ice climbers cant be in smash 4 because the 3ds cant handle 8 characters on screen at once so he cut them from both versions. So basically you lost, hes in the game.

Earthbound, ripping apart your brain since 1994

10 years ago today. That was the first time I ever played it because that was the daily it became available on Wii U. No exaggeration: I haven't had a single day pass by since where I haven't thought about EarthBound at least once. It has remained my favorite game of all-time, until I tried Mother 3 a few years ago. Happy 10th anniversary for the Earthbound Wii U release!

I really like this i wish this was on TV

This game is one of the many reasons why I got a Wii U! There are so many moments throughout this crazy game that really make you think. This game reminds us that the SNES was the king of RPGs!

PSI Pen, because the pen is stronger than the sword

I hope this had sold well, I bought this the moment I saw it in the eShop. Most underrated franchise in history, I really hope this sells and we see more out of the franchise like 3DS remakes or a GBA Virtual Console Bundle of all 3 Mother Titles. I hope HAL or APE remaster of Mother 2 for the Wii U or 3DS, like how MK9 retold the story of the original trilogy but with some significant twists. I'd love to see a more intimate relationship with the villain, like someone in your team pulls a "Fire Emblem betrayal" and joins Giygas. But it would have to be very personal, the character has to be right at home with the Player and Ness, so why not introduce a younger brother to Ness, whose is around 9 years old, into the Earthbound story? Pokey Minch wasn't the twist I wanted for the game, it wasn't hard to figure out his purpose as a character in a serious story. What would be nice is if there is a Lord of the Flies aspect, where you slowly watch a good person turn psychotic. Seeing how the Mother Franchise is about the relationship between a Child and Mother, it would be intense to see Ness' younger brother ventures off from his character's context and turn flat-out evil so he can gain the one thing that matters most to him and Giygas: being the center focus of their Mother's Relationship. Giygas was abandoned physically, so an emotionally abandoned child would be the perfect match. It'd be really intense to watch how the insanity of jealousy unfold, and how hard-questions have to be asked and answered. Instead of going home with a girl and two new friends, you the Player and Ness walk home with your dead baby brother's body in your arms, which has scares from being possessed by Giygas. We then watch as Ness chokes up in tears and tries to explain what had happen to the beloved child to their beloved mother. Earthbound has always been a mature title, so why not have Ness answer the hard questions we have all been asking?
