I got my Z9 about 3 months ago, and could not be happier. It's my first "flagship" camera since the D3X, and I'm constantly impressed with the ways it's elevated my work. Waiting for one to arrive was tedious, but well worth it. :)

Thanks for the great review, I got mine in January through NPS, with a 24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8. After running through your set up guide it is a real pleasure to use. I am beginning to find it easier to move around the controls. The other morning I was carrying it on a tripod close to my chest as it was raining and the I menu button must have got bumped because when I stopped to make my next shot all my settings in the I menu had been changed it would be handy to lock the I menu once set. Maybe I have missed it in your excellent walk through. Thanks.

KEH is a bit of a scam, they offer too little for your equipment and sell it for too much. I would advise not going this route unless you want to lose a lot of money. If you are buying, buy new, it’s almost the same price.

Thanks for this review, Matt. The little thnings that you say need improving are details your average enthusiast wouldn't really pick up on as they probably wouldn't be used by anyone other than a pro togger. Attention to details is always the sign that the extra mile has been travelled when designing and building any high end product. The Z 9 deserves that extra mile, I hope Nikon see this and make those improvements to this beast of a camera.

Mine will be arriving in 2 days. I currently shoot with 2 D500 cameras, and have been extremely happy with my wildlife work with them. The discontinuation of the D500 is what prompted my jump to mirrorless. I will continue to shoot them alongside the Z9, and look forward to seeing the side by side results. I do believe I will be waiting to order the 600 F/4 S when it appears. It will be great to see the image quality next to the 600 F/4 G that has been such a fantastic lens all these years, albeit a tank of a lens. Great review. Looking forward to getting my hands on this.

Hey Matt. Excellent review once more, I agree with the little ports, not so about the screen fragility as I grabbed it couple of times from the open screen and behaved as expected... I will dare to add one more point where Nikon didn't (?) thought about it and it is the front "fn" buttons to the vertical position, they are missing when use it vertically...

I have had my Z9 since late March. It is so much better than my D4 was for wildlife. I especially like the option of flipping to DX mode and still getting a 19 MP file. I also use it for landscapes and macro. But for street or for the car show I just went to, I grab the D750. It is light and discreet and the 50mm f/1.4 lens works so well with it. I have only one Z lens, the 40mm f/2, but it lost out to the 50mm for the car show. I can't imagine having two Z cameras right now with all of these F lenses.

Great summary video :) One point or maybe, issue I found with my Z9 is low light AF though. It probably is the same with every mirrorless, i.e., Canon and Sony too. To be precise, I sometimes shoot low light in my studio when I use modelling light from my light formers. Light for the shot comes from the flash strobes, but AF must live with the low modelling light. My D850 does just fine, my Z9 though does Eye-AF in the viewfinder just fine but does not always actually lock focus on the AF point. In AF-S, the box then does not always turn green and if enabled, the green AF assist beam light comes on (then it locks focus but it can be embarrassing for the model). In AF-C, some images just turn out very blurry. I am sure the AF lock works at lower EVs in the D850 compared to the Z9 - although the spec sheet says otherwise. @Matt and fellow photographers ... what is your experience with AF lock on the Z9 in dim artificial light situations? (I don't mean EyeAF video presentations on YT showing low light is ok - EyeAF works in much dimmer situations than the actual AF lock does!) Matt's video spends no word on this, maybe, he doesn't have a dark room studio ...

Love mine. AF can be a challenge in tricky situation (main subject behind busy foreground) tho. Customization is amazing and build quality is on par with D5/6. Love the easy switch over to video. Could imagine a Z8 with smaller footprint but similar specs (slower) to complement it.

I can only agree, love my Z9 and what i get out of it. When i had my 800pf and changed to that one instead of the old 600f4, well i didn't believe my eyes, the AF was so freaking fast, and quiet and spot on.... Nikon is back but as you say, still not perfect and hopefully in some update near future it will be even better :)

Thanks, Matt, for your Video 👍 There are a few things I don't like: 😡 - blackout if exposure is longer then 1/8s (for longer than 1s I wouldn’t care) - setting Memory-banks miss (beside the existing rename, copy) a "backup"(to camera memory) and "restore" - there are several clumsy workarounds for that missing function. - ISO-sensitivity Step: there is 1/2EV missing!!!!! (only 1EV and 1/3 EV) What really great is: 😀 - Autofocus - AF-C In-Focus Display (This is something they should add to the Z6/Z7!!!!!!!!) - possibilities to assign "AF-area mode + AF-ON" to button - this opens for a lot of possibilities!! - possibilities to assign "Recall shooting functions and hold" to button - this opens for a lot of possibilities!! (like one-button fast changing for low ISO long/ shutter speed for "Panning: Photographing Moving Subjects" (during a sport shooting)

Matt, thank you for the Z9 videos and for the trinity Z lens video from awhile ago. What are your favorite portrait lenses for the Z9? I ask because like you, portraiture is about 90, well, maybe 75 percent of what I do. I tend to like smaller lenses, and my other camera is an SL2, and an M3. I feel like the Z9 would be a good all-round camera, but am wondering about your preferred portrait lenses for it.

Matt, thanks for your time, energy, and Field Tested video. As you mentioned, there's lots you could have touched on. I'll keep it brief. First, I would welcome your thoughts on which software you use to process your images, and your opinion on LLC vs. HE*. I found Adobe products did not seem to handle HE* to my expectations (yet). Second, I still find that with long lenses the issues with focus jumping to the background (wildlife) and needing to rack manually (or other methods) and 3D reliability (at distance) or wide area large/small/custom jumping to water reflections OUTSIDE the box is still a big issue. For "non-humans" in stills mode, the AF stickiness still needs refinement. Agree with you about the port doors and lens lineup. 85, 105, 135, 200mm (or 300mm - which I doubt is in the plans) would be nice to see on the road map. You didn't mention weight as one of your negatives (but you did mention a smaller Z8) so I assume that was also in your thoughts. All in all an awesome camera and one that makes shooting every day more enjoyable. Nude portraiture is not my thing, but your shoots are enough to tempt me away from the wildlife/action/sports. Again, appreciate your efforts.

Great video, thank you! With regard to the ports being exposed, especially ethernet if you don't use it you may want to consider getting some silicone port plugs. I guess there's a possibility they may do more harm than good if they end up trapping moisture in behind them but for the sake of a couple of dollars it might be worth giving it a shot.

I use my Z9 for shooting high school sports and find that the 3D tracking system is more trouble than it's advertised for. When shooting basketball or soccer for instance when you have multiple players moving around the field of view, quickly, the Z9 just can't keep up and will constantly pick out a player that I wasn't trying to keep in focus. I now revert back to spot focusing to shoot sports events. Other than that I love this camera and feel lost when using my D850 and am thinking about trading in the D850 and all the lense to go with it.

Hey Matt. You have enough pull with Nikon to recommend firmware? I don’t get their choice of button customs. I NEVER change focus mode, let alone on the fly. How about a button you push with command dial to change focus area and sub-command to change eye focus. That would be perfect!!!

  • @jredziniak

Having shot 20+ weddings and 35+ portrait sessions with the Z9 since getting it, my only gripe with it is the AF performance in low light situations on moving subjects. Mainly people dancing at wedding receptions. When I say low light, I mean scenes where you would be at 1/125 2.8 3200-6400 if you were shooting ambient only and no flash. On the D5 I would always use full auto continuous (with the camera choosing the focus point) and had a function button mapped to override for 9 point continuous while holding the function button. I would nail focus on people dancing 99% of the time this way. The same set up on the Z9 has a huge miss rate, though at this point I've tested every AF mode in the menu with the same results in these lighting situations. Activating starlight mode helps a bit, but often not enough. The entire rest of the day, the AF is a beast and sticks to the eye like glue so couldn't be happier. I've even fallen in love with my 85mm again as on the D5 it was tricky to nail tack sharp focus on the eye at 1.8 whereas the Z9 makes that very easy. I'll revert back to my D5 for dancing shots at receptions from now on, which is a shame I need to do that.

I dont own onem, but im landscape/cityscape focused with my photography and interested in sports/portrait, a removeable grip would have been nice for weight purposes specially when hiking lofty grades with a pack full of gear since every ounce matters lol. But it seems the key to not overheating with those massive video functions lies within the grip and keeping the battery as far away from everything as you can, so I see that tradeoff. But definitely curious to see what happens in the next gen z7 if they stick with that name focus wise. And I currently have a 1st gen z7.

Really looking forward to the rumored Z8, but I don't think and don't hope it will be same sensor. I want it to have a mechanical shutter since shooting in electronic shutter mode tends to reduce dynamic range a bit. I want to Z8 to be all about image quality and accuracy. For me 6K 10bit video would be enough. I certainly don't want a cooler to be able to shoot 8K.

Got mine in February. Had been using a D850 / D500 combination, mainly for nature and wildlife / birding up until the Z9, which has really upped my keeper rate. Amazing camera. Still using my f mount telephotos, which are working fine with the FTZ II, while waiting for more Z glass to roll out. It is a complicated machine and I'm still climbing the learning curve. In addition to the few issues you have with the Z9, I'll add the bank system really needs some work.

  • @paulbusby2013

Ironically, I'm using my infrared-converted Z6 almost exclusively at the moment with a 720nm clip-in filter. As for my Z9 on f/w 2.0, I wish it could autosense portrait mode that disables the vertical controls when in landscape mode - I either forget to set or switch off the lock! Nikon have certainly nailed eye detection etc but my Z6 was better for low-light static AF in many situations. One weakness that doesn't effect me but some sports photographers doing LED-lit stadium work is banding. Nikon IS improving it in the next or future update but many ARE questioning the wisdom of not including a mechanical shutter. Whether or not Canon will with their R1 remains to be seen! Although the Z9 IS a revolutionary camera some say the lens mount should be better attached to the body - many carry theirs in bags without heavy lenses attached. I don't think many thought Nikon could bring out such an amazing camera whose talents outweigh its weaknesses!

I wish I could justify the price tag, but I can't because I don't need any of the Z9 features :) I am perfectly happy with the Z7II which is even an overkill for what I shoot. However, the temptation to have the latest and greatest in imaging technology is always a great appeal. Maybe when I tick off all the glass on my bucket list, I can start saving for one.

Great video series. Matt for product, landscape, portrait and moving portraits (Dance), who do you like best....Z9 or Fuji GFX 100s? or should I say other that the detail which the 102 mp sensor provides are there any other benefits that the Fuji provides that Nikon does'nt. I originally was going to purchase the Fuji but the longer I look at the Z9 the better I like the Nikon. I wished I had the benefit of leaf shutter but neither offers and I can shoot hi speed sync. Both offer great glass and think overall the glass goes to Nikon......Anyway what say you good sir?!! Cheers

I purchased the Z9 about 6 months ago and so far I am loving the system. My only issue is weight; with the 70-200mm this system is a workout to carry especially if you have to do so for a few hours. With that being said, the image quality is incredible. The speed is insane. For video, it has exceptional AF performance (with the 24-70 2.8).

you should check teardown images of Z9 by Kolari Vision. Nikon have used metal plates and heat sink pads to manage heat for 8k 60fps 12bit raw. this is one of the reason why its heavy.

I can see why they might have only had 3 port covers. Having less covers should, in theory, reduce the total area water or dirt can enter the camera. e.g. a 5 x 5 cm box will have 20 cm where water or dirt can enter. a 5 x 5 cm box cut in half vertically and horizontally (think windows logo) would add another 20 cm where water or dirt can enter.

  • @mattgranger

@@mattgranger Very strange. I got my Z9 at the beginning of April. During the first few weeks I explored various set-ups - especially the mapping of the Function buttons (F2 under the Control Menu). I had set up 4 different mappings for the different user modes. All was working perfectly and then last week I saw a video with a suggestion for a different use for a function button and decided to give it a try. I went to F2 and then pressed right on the control ring beside the back-screen and the camera immediately locked up. I tried this several times with and without cards in the slots but the same thing happened every time - I couldn't even see the current button mapping. F1 and F3 both worked perfectly, it was just F2. I called Nikon NPS Support and we went through a range of tests finishing with a complete RESET but the same thing happened every time. I also took the camera in to my local Nikon dealer (only a couple of miles from my home) and they were equally non-plussed. Anyway Nikon arranged to collect the camera from me the following day and it is now back with them and will, hopefully, be sorted and back with me very soon. I am back using my Z7ii - it seems so slow after ten weeks with the Z9 and I have to keep reminding myself that I was getting great images with it before the 9 came along!!!
