I know... i was looking for more info about the video capabilities of this camera but couldn't find any good info so finally decided to test it out myself.

You forgot to mention the most important thing for videographers. It's the first 4k (UHD) DSLR with a Full-Frame 1.0x Crop Factor. This means a 50mm is a 50mm. As opposed to Canons 5D Mark IV which has a crop factor of 1.64x when shooting in 4k.

canon 5d iv has the crop factor of 1.74x actually, not 1.64x, but yeah why didn't he mention that d850 is the first 4k DSLR which is full-frame, that's a tie-breaker and advantages

Hi Tom, 5 years later I finally got back to photography again and also 5 years after you made this review, I got hold of a used D850 to upgrade from my D700(and D7100). Nice video and as an photography first person, I really like the extra bonus that my camera is able to do some video just fine. Must say that and also as you mentioned the video quality in it's own is of good quality as long as you ain't doing anything fancy.

Good overview Tom. It looks an epic camera for stills & the video looks decent but the features are bit limited compared to Panasonic for example. I hope Nikon release a killer FX and/or DX mirrorless camera with a vari-angle touchscreen, fast, accurate AF system, fast burst rate and dual SD card slots plus 4K video, especially since Sony have just announced the A7iii which looks pretty decent.

I own this camera as my stills Camera and although I would always jump on my GH5 for video it’s really handy to have strong video features in your stills camera.

Thanks for the great, in-depth review. I did not upgrade to a D850 from my D810 but am seriously considering a Z7. I just watched this review again and if the preliminary reports are correct, the Z7 will have almost all of the D850 still features and will have resolved the shortcomings this camera had for video. It’d be great if you could get your hands on a Z7 and give us your opinion.

Please don’t leave it without lens or cap like that.It’s making me nervous 😬

Hi Tom. Thanks for your video. I'm wondering what tripod you have. I'm looking for something I can use with the d850 and a 200-500m lens with pan and tilt, level and I liked the handle you have at the back.

Great review :) is there a possibility in flat filming to add extra saturation or contrast to the screen? ( so you dont end up setting white balance and looking for focus in a flat image ). Also, can you record video on both cards at the same time?

Thank you for posting this. Im probably one of the few people on the planet that switched from Sony to Nikon for the reasons you mentioned. The D850 is all around great camera that has pretty much the same IQ from 64-1600 iso which is the sweet spot for me. Regarding profiles, I went to NikonPC.com and downloaded “AlvaroYus-Curve” which is flatter than the default flaat profile (but not as flat as log). They have others that emulate fuji and kodak film profiles that are great for in camera results that dont require much edit in post. I find the nikon color profiles easier to grade than 8 bit 4:2:0 log which goes south rather quickly if you push it too hard. You can also use Capture NX-d to create your own custom profiles based on your own images. One could scout a location, take stills, then and create a custom color profile for a future video shoot. Great video. For video. I noticed you recored moving shots, you even used a gimbal. Please tell me how you accomplish this with the D850????? Are you doing manual focus by moving the lens ring? Please tell me how this is accomplished with the D850?

I am amateur filmmaker from Japan /Tokyo and if you have a little time for me i would like to ask something ;D I watched a lot of footages of many cameras , top ones for filmmakers in the middle range /pro consumer , Canon , Nikon , Panasonic GH5 , Sony A6500 ,Sony A7Rll, FujiFIlm Xt-20 and others ... Can i ask why DSLR looking are so different of Mirrorless cameras ? Is like DSLR look more organic Tones ...more like "Film" style , i Know are all are digital cameras, digital sensor but even the same Focal length and exposure DSLR and Mirrorless look kind " different " perpective of the subject in the frame ... i know about the crop factor in cameras or super 35mm mode is not thisi am talking about. I make my videos in a Nikon 7500 in for 4k and my friend have a Sony A6300 , we compared the same focal length at same exposure and i know how sony 4k have so much more details but nikon have a more " Organic " feel /colors to video . ashwani baweja If you are primarily doing video then a Panasonic GH5/GH5s or Sony a7iii/a7sii will most likely being your top options to consider.

How much memory it will consume if we record in 4k..as canon eats 64 gb card in just 16 min

Can u do a video on anamorphic lens under $300 like moondog labs x Beastgrip x Ironglass Adapters. Etc.

Love your videos tom...ive had my d850 for few months and i really love it im a pro photographer and videographer and have shot video with my 850 but i dont realy like it. Its great for utube but when you go to bd its kinda of choppy and stabelization is not that good. But for photos i love it

The flat picture profile does look nice. It seemed like you were implying though that you couldn't add additional picture profiles? Did I misunderstand you? starting at 15:48 you said there was no log or even customizing further the three profiles that it comes with. So does that mean you can't use the Nikon Picture Control Utility for creating / importing different profiles???

I think he missed that part, you can normally have custom picture profile if you want. There are some people that have done log type profile for Nikon's. In fact you can dig a little bit more in the shadows generally in Nikon's.

Thanks a lot, now I can't stand up for a while. I just can't wait for my D850 that I have ordered at my favorite camera store "B&H". A guy just left my house with my D810 so I'll have to make do with my D500 and Fujifilm X-T2.

If you had homeowners insurance you could have recovered most, if not all, of the cost of the D850.

love the nlkon d850 had mlne for a few months my favorite feature ls the 1080p 120 fps lt looks so good lf you know why your dolng and to be able to play lt back ln camera ls worth the money for me plus you got great looking 4k to and on photography slde this camera takes the best looking photos lve seen so l think this camera ls the best all around dslr l only wlsh the video focusing was bette and and camera ls a halr to blg not for people with small hands l got medluem sloe hands and lt just barly flts ln my hand

Ugh. I keep going back and forth between D850 and Sony A7 iii. Such a hard decision. I’m already in the Nikon ecosystem, but REALLY want a great video camera.

I bought a used D800 becuase I'm just starting out with DSLRs and I'm kind of tired of Apple and their "the iPhone is the only camera you need bullshit....". I have a 70-200 f2.8 sigma the Nikon 14-24 and a Nikon 50mm 1.8. LOVE IT. If I had the budget I'd get the D850, however.. I think I need to master the D800 first to deserve an upgrade. Grate video!

Why not just have a separate dedicated 4k camcorder?

What other cameras do you prefer for video mainly and some pro photography as well?

Dont do that much pro photography so can't honestly say. But my fave rightnow photo and video camera is sony a6600 and Sony a7iii

Use video stabilizers for smooth videos.

why does your 2000 iso look less noisy than my 1600 iso?

I want a 120 fps not poxy 30 where you get blurred images or video.

Do you think canon is better because of the dual pixel AF

Sol Shalem for video definitely yes. Canon has way better faster n more accurate video AF but for photos it's not as big of a difference.

For the price of £2500 or $ 2500 what's the best video camera to buy? I get fed up with taking stills I'm more into movies now with more stops of light.

Search for answers on KZread videos as I have done.

I wish they would introduce 25 ISO option for shooting with flash outside or video shooting on bright days. Why not? I used to shoot with Kodak Ektar 25 film,back in 1990's.

You definitely should use a prime when mounted on a stabilizer, not a zoom. Your legs are the zoom! The rig will be much more manageable.

Antos you are forgetting hdmi out in 4k.

Essa câmera é perfeita, incrível quando você testou o iso nos veados totalmente no escuro e o iso poderoso dela fez com que desse para ver eles. Os vídeos em câmera lenta é maravilhoso ❤️, é espetacular, parece mágico. Eu tinha uma câmera, mas nem de longe chega perto dessa máquina maravilhosa, infelizmente tive que vender pra pagar dívidas, mas se eu for comprar um dia uma camera, vou com certeza querer essa, vai demorar pra eu comprar, mas um dia consigo. Parabéns pelo vídeo, foi inspirador ver você falando dessa câmera, quando a gente gosta de algo, falamos com amor.

Why is there always limitations for 4k on lot of brands except like Sony ..when you spend over 2k on a camera you expect not a single limitation consider even cellphones don't have limitations even in 4k. Tho the mirrorless cameras don't seem to have too many limitations like the Nikon Z lines

What video camera are you most impressed by?

If video is your thing wouldn't you go for a video camera like Sony's ax series or Canon's G series...or black magic? Just trying to understand everyone's fixation of getting video from stills cameras. What don't I know that everyone else seems to know.

Thanks for this vidéo, this must be a good camera because NASA had bought a lot of them...

OMG, they removed the ability to add additional profiles for video?! That's a non-starter then, since I was able to add CineFlat for Nikon cameras when I shot 4K with the D500 and the extra latitude it added beyond flat was fabulous! If you can't do this on the D850 that is a HUGE loss. :/

Actually I am not sure if you can add other profiles. I didn't try that out... but the camera only has those 3 settings. Sorry for not trying to import other profiles, completely slipped my mind.

Thank you. I will do videos about the a7iii and also about the a7Siii but only when I had a chance to use these cameras for a while. I really dont like to do a video talking about a camera like I am an expert when that camera has just come out a week ago. If Im going to talk about any piece of gear I want to have the chance to use it at least for a month before I feel like I can honestly tell you what I think is good and bad about a particular camera. So be weary of people who do videos about anything when the product was only been available for a few days. Most cases those videos are not honest.

A7III is a toy in comparison. I might be interested if it was the A7S3. Someone said this is an old camera ummm it’s less than six months old I am not sure why you wouldn’t talk about it.

1080...p come on were in 4k land nikon. I will go else where.

the tilt screen is actualy a very stupid implementation, it's hard to get it out on a tripod, I don't know if somebody tested it at all. shame :(

Milan Pintar the sensor is behind the mirror, so not exposed! If it was mirror less, the sensor would be exposed!

Nobody can afford money for it lol
