Thanks for the info. My D600 is in the dark ages but still shoots excellent photos. Some of this is even still applicable to it so I found it helpful!

I am leaning more and more toward purchasing the D850. I absolutely love your videos on this setup and your other video about setting up back button focus. I hope you make a few more short tutorials of features you use with this camera. How does the autofocus perform in 4k video shooting with the D850? On my other nikon I would simply push the shutter button halfway during the shoot and the focus would come in crisp and clear.

I'm also struggling between the d850 or the Canon 1dxii. I'm leaving mirrorless and going back to dslr but don't know which to choose.

Steve, I just watched your video. I really liked it!. I have a question for you. I really hope you can answer it. How useful do you find the Custom Setting Banks under the Custom Setting Menu. Is it really worth setting them up and using them? Hope to hear from you: Thanks a lot

+Steve Bost colorspace only matters if you’re shooting jpg. And I’m shooting raw.

Good idea, I'll do one in the near future. I used to use the LensAlign target but it broke. Now I use a cheap DSLRKIT target from amazon and it works just as well.

Steve,I just got the Nikon D850 and your video was very helpful in setting my camera. Thank you. I was trying to access the histogram on the camera to make sure the picture is properly exposed without having to go to the live view mode. However, I was not able to do it. I did not have this problem with my other Nikon cameras. Can you explain the steps I need to execute?

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking but I'll try to answer... When you are playing an image back on the screen - click 'up' on the round thumbpad - that will scroll through the different view screens. To change what those screens are, go to the Playback menu, then into Playback display options and make your selections.

D850 I like it

Hi Steve, Just received my 850 today, and I followed your initial set up mostly to the T! Since I am primarily a landscape photographer, would any of your custom settings be problematic, or will they suffice regardless if one shoots landscapes or nature/wildlife images?

Cool. I shoot landscapes all the time too. You should of course customize your settings, notably the AF mode you like (single point for landscapes is what I prefer), and anything else like exposure delay mode etc. have fun!

Thank You Steve for your reply. Should I "unchecked" the other options in the 'a9 custom settings' then for landscapes only, or leave them in the default settings? I would assume that I can set them at my leisure depending on the subject matter IE Birds, etc....Please advise at your convenience.

Mirrorless without an OVF is only for newbies and cell-phone jockies. Get the D850. I did and I'm not looking back.

Where do I see exposure meter inside viewfinder and top lcd? I am used to seeing in Canon 6d Mark 2. The scale where in manual mode it tells me if I am under expose (negative of 0) or overexposed (positive of 0)?

In the viewfinder, bottom middle is where you’ll find it. Depending on what mode you’re in, it might only display the scale if you’re adjusting it or if the setting is not zero. It’s in the middle of the top lcd, again displayed if it’s not zero, depending on the mode.

Hi Steve, Great video! I just received my D850 and I am still trying to navigate my way around it. My question for you is how can I see focusing peaking inside the viewfinder? Now I only see it in the LCD.

There is not focus peaking through the viewfinder. The Z6 and Z7 can do it but not the D850...

There was earlier in the season but we are in a big winter weather pattern at the moment. Rain and snow but no smoke.

i am trying to set the beep focus mode so when i am focus it will beep like thr d810. could you help with that? thanks

Sure. In the setup menu, scroll down to ‘beep options’ and turn it on. This only works in single servo AF mode (AF-S)

I would highly recommend against setting up your second card for overflow, you have no protection from a card failure.

Thx for the comment. I'm going to make a quick video soon to answer this comment, I think other people might benefit from it as well.

Why call it "D85" and not "850"? You do know that this is a digital camera. (That's what the "D" stands for...right?) Since Nikon allows only 3 digits, a Letter would make sense if you have several D850 bodies, so you would call the 1st one "A85" the 2nd one "B85" etc. etc. (Just interesting for me to follow your way of thought.)

This was not a critique, I was merely trying to understand your reasons for choosing your file name this way. If as a photographer you are putting yourself out there teaching other photographers, most would expect that you thought your advice through before filming and that you would allow questions concerning your tips. No reason to get sensitive or upset. What will you do if someone really criticizes you? Delete immediately everything that is not a compliment? Difficult questions and different thoughts not permitted? Good luck with your Channel!
