Hi Tom. Thanks for all your reviews and video's. For the past 8 yrs I have used the Nikon 300 f2.8 as my main wildlife lens, you know the lens well so no reason to explain why I love the lens. It really shines with the high resolution cameras and I have used the D800e, D810 with it the past years and have used all 3 TC's. The 1.7 and 2.0 comes with some compromises. I have always used 2 bodies, one on the 80-400 the other on the 300. I currently have a D5 that the insurance replaced after my D4s with some lenses got stolen from my car and a D810. I need a bit more reach and have tested the Nikon 200-500, Tamron and sigma 150-600 but have come away unconvinced. Maybe I am spoiled with the 300. So the next option is to either get the D500 for the DX factor or get the D850 that will allow for cropping but also allow for shooting in 1.2 or 1.5 crop that has been a major benefit with the high Resolution sensors. What would you suggest? Thanks for your time

Hey Jakes, so as you know I LOVE the 300 2.8, can't really see myself ever swapping from it as my main long telephoto. As for deployment, I use the 1.4 tc and it works wonderfully, however I am thinking of adding the 2.0 TC III to my bag as well for certain situations. As an owner of both the D500 and D850 my personal preference will always be the D850, the resolution and options make it king. In crop mode its just as good as the D500 yet also allows you shorter crop options or FX when the conditions allow, meaning you can have ultra high res, or reach in one camera. With the grip (that you'll want) you get 9fps with the right batteries, meaning you're only a little down on the D500 however get so many added benefits. The look of the images is also better than the D500, as the FX depth characteristics are really gorgeous. Personally if it was me and funds not a problem, it would be the D850 all the way, because then with the 1.4 and 2.0 tc's you've got a boat load of options in a reasonable compact set up. A note as well that personally I wouldn't use the 1.7 - the quality just isnt up to that of the 1.4 or even 2.0 MK III. Hope that helps, anything else, let me know! Cheers, Tom

@@Jessehermansonphotography I'm still using the 300mm 2.8 as my primary telephoto, it just has a look I find hard to beat, probably will upgrade if we get a Z mount version but I love my Vr II

i like your videos tom . i do wildlife photography creeping into herds of deer .in silly looking but essential sniper looking gear . i only really look through the camera once im aware of where they are . any sudden movements once in the herd . is usually very explosive . you can mess with the settings later ..raw processing .. and AF . sometimes manual focus is the better option .in a closed in wooded area .with thick canopy blocking out light . your fast lenses have focussed on a thin twig you didnt see between you and a very angry stag ..

It's the order on how the camera prioritizes the shot in continuous mode: 1) Release, as long as you have the release pressed, pictures will be taken no matter what; 2) Focus + Release, when pressing the shutter it will first try to focus and if it gets it, pictures are taken as long as release is pressed, potentially having misfocused shots, fps stay high; 3) Release + Focus, by pressing release it takes one picture, but will only continue to take shots that have focused. It potentially drops your fps down to zero (no focus), or not at all (perfect focus); 4) Focus, only focused shots are taken.

Hi Tom Thanks for a great video - I have learned a lot. Question - the Bluetooth went off and dark on my menu. When I press it it says it is not available in the current setting. Airplane mode is off. I have reinstalled snap bridge. Any idea? Thanks!

I believe you should get Wi-Fi first sorted/set (SnapBridge) and then Bluetooth will be active. They do work together. Make sure Airplane mode isn't set to On.

Good video Tom, thanks very much. Here's a quick question which might be crying out for a long answer. I've never seen anybody do a really good job of explaining Custom Menu Banks and Photo Shooting Menu Banks. I'd like to have a particular setup for sports and one for portraits but having two different types of banks is proving confusing. Do you use these things to set up shooting for different situations? And if so, how?

Loved the in-depth review if your settings. A few good gems I can apply myself (to my Canon 5D). One that I have never tried (but will) is to auto focus only with the AF-ON button and keep the shutter release to just taking the photo. The number of times I've needed to snap a shot quickly but had the lens auto focus again is high. This will really help, thanks. I've done a quick video in a similar way but to go over what I do for super sharp photos. Getting used to rear button focus is something that is just so helpful and it becomes second nature after a while working with it in the field. The ability to focus-re-compose and shoot makes it great for fast paced shooting and personally I think once you've started and got used to it, you'll never go back! Cheers, Tom

I don't shoot sports however AF-c with the lock on set to as fast as possible, use the single point or 21 point AF (depending how accurate you are yourself at keeping the cursor over the action) top drive mode - 7fps, or 9 if you have the battery grip and extended battery. I work in Manual but aperture mode will likely help you keep up with the changing action, watch your ISO to keep your shutter speed high 1/1000 or above to free the action and enjoy!

do you use Auto I S O in Manual if why not

Jake the D850 I personally think is the best all round camera for wildlife photography, the FX sensor, AF, Build is just awesome but of course comes with a price, the D500 features almost all the same, but has a lower res DX sensor and a few other missing features. If you want FX for the depth of field qualities its in a league of its own however, if you arn't heart set of full frame and want a body that has 90% of the performance for half the price the D500 is awesome. Largely its down the if you want FX and cost. The D500 is still a top quality camera and as I mentioned a while back in a vid, you cant only really also make the most of the D850 if you have a top line up of pro spec lenses to use with it. Tom’s point about needing the best lenses is worth considering. For example, I’ve used an older 60mm f/2.8D macro lens on the D800e and D810 with excellent results, but on the D850 it was noticeably soft compared to the newer G model, even after AF fine tuning. Also, you’ll need high capacity top of the line memory cards and an XQD reader to go with the camera...and if you add the Nikon grip, battery, and charger you will have to cough up another $940 (USD). The cost of the body is only the beginning, but if you have the budget the D850 is a tremendous camera.

Yes Jerry, its certainly a significant investment. With grip, cards and a few spare batteries its really more £5k but I think for me it will be my camera for the next 3-5 years. The lens investment is also so important because with poor glass the camera isnt being given any chance to perform to its best. I really feel you need the 2.8 zooms/ and primes to really get the best from the camera, although the 200-500 is pretty sharp along with some of the other newer lenses to really bring the magic from the camera. Personally for many people the D500 + spending extra on some better lenses would probably be a better and more significant upgrade for most. Hi. Am puzzled as to why you assign a depth of field preview button. I thought that with Nikon , when you enter live view, the lens aperture automatically changes to the set fstop value. This would render it unnecessary to press a button to get DoF. Am I correct in this? Apperently Canon is the other way round.

Yes in Live view the depth is automatically shown, however rarely am I in live view when working with wildlife, being able to see it through the viewfinder is essential when shooting stills and so still the preview is important when I’m judging focus depth for certain images. Cheers, Tom

I see what you mean. Preview for viewfinder, not LV. I wasn't sure it was possible to accurately judge DoF through modern viewfinders. I haven't even tried it. I will now as it'd be especially useful for handheld shots. Thanks

For birds in flight you'll want to be in AF-c for continuous focus paired with either single point (if you are accurate at tracking birds in the viewfinder yourself) or a multi patterned AF group mode to help with tracking. 21 or 51 points are great or 3D track. Cheers, Tom

Hey David, I’m Regards to mirrorless I’ve never really tried with them for wildlife work, I have and do use a A6500 for some of the filming on this channel, but personally as a camera it doesn’t fit my needs for wildlife. I’m really excited to see what’s going to come out in terms of mirrorless, with Nikon having announced development I’m Keen to see and put them to the test. The only real benefits to me however are those for video, as a stills shooter my D850 is pretty darn perfect and with the lens selection for f mount. For myself I’m a traditionalist as well, optical viewfinders are awesome, I want to see my subject though a lens and not a screen. I feel the screen adds a disconnect. Personally I’m only looking forward to the Nikon mirrorless for video advantages. My D850 and D500 are perfectly suited for my image capture needs, I mean so is the F6 I have and love to use! Also for the big players in mirrorless at the moment they lack some of the key lenses for wildlife shooters.

I whole heartedly agree, I love what mirrorless is doing in terms of pushing the boundaries of technology in the camera world, it's exciting to see what is around the bend! Exvitel. I shoot wildlife almost exclusively and will provide you with my experience of mirrorless camera systems. I own an Olympus EM1 mark II + Olympus 300mm f4 + Olympus 1.4 TC + Olympus 12 - 100mmf4. I also own a Nikon D500, Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6, Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + Nikkor TC14EIII and a Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro. I tend to use both systems side by side: typically the D500 for birds/insects in flight and the EM1.2 for everything else. During the spring and summer, however, I often have my macro lens on my D500 so my EM1.2 + 300mm +/- the 1.4TC takes over BIF duties. The EM1.2 is not the equal of the D500 for BIF but comes quite close. In all other areas it is as good, if not better (it has in camera image stacking and ProCapture, both of which are superb). As for image quality (in it's broadest sense), I have difficulty telling the two apart - up to ISO 1600. The Olympus system does have a significant weight advantage, though my EM1.2 + 300mm weighs more than my D500 + 300mm PF VR + TC14EIII. My EM1.2 also has three customisable pre-sets located on the top rotary switch. The camera is so sophisticated I can set each one up for SS/aperture/number of focus points/S-AF/C-CAF/compensation etc. I can change from photographing a perched bird to capturing a bird in flight in the blink of an eye. Can't do that with my D500. The D500 shooting banks are primitive by comparison. The EM1.2 will also shoot at up to 15 fps C-AF with mechanical shutter, 18 fps electronic shutter in C-AF and 60 fps S-AF. The electronic shutter is totally silent.

on Nikon's highlight priority is it only available on iso 200 and above like the Canon?

Hi Tom, very helpful settings, also for kidz fotos outside :) I share your optinion for "blind" shooting, focussing on the objects, not on camera menus. So, here is my question: is it possible to get slow motion settings on / or mode > switched directly on the Fn1 or Fn2 button ? That would be great and .. I think intersting for all enhanced users, who like to modify the D850. Very nice and helpful video, make more :)

You add it into the main directory of an CFexpress card, pull it from the computer into the first section of the drive, don't hide it in a folder. (has to be pre formatted for the right camera) then when you go into the camera you can pull the file and load setting/upgrade firmware. Cheers, Tom

I know but... what that one thing that Nikon provides but canon not??so that I can decide my new one...is it focus system??or clearity? Most people say that Nikon has superb clearity... But how thay have exact same mega pixel as canon..than where the clearity come from??

For myself I've always been a Nikon shooter and so have a significant investment in lenses etc. For me I also feel the D850 is the best wildlife cam out there at the moment the sensor, resolution, high ISO and dynamic range are superb. Team that with an excellent focusing system - for stills photography - as well as a body that is ergonomic and customisable it just is truly awesome. If you shoot canon and have a boat load of lenses then it would be expensive and probably not worth swapping because the 5D line is also great, but personally I find the Nikon system suits me very well, I love to images that come out of the Nikon sensors, especially with the brilliant dynamic range.
