I have a Fujifilm XT-2 and a Nikon D610. I like the results and enjoy the smaller form factor of Fuji, as well as the retro look, feel and utility, and what-you-see-is-what-you-get (thru the viewfinder). My intent was to downsize/minimize with Fujifilm and ditch Nikon. Can't do it - the D610 offers a different physical shooting experience and results that I still very much enjoy - sometimes I just like a larger/more substantial tool in my hands. I like having a full-frame option at the ready, too.

Nikon D800 and D700. Now I want, need, covet...but can’t quite afford, a D850. They cost a small fortune down here in Australia. Love your images Julian.

Sounds like you have the best of both worlds! The WYSIWYG that you get with the Fuji certainley is a thing I would like to see eventually in a Nikon camera. Very useful for long exposures I've heard! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. :-)

Hey Keith, sorry if I've made your life a bit more difficult! :-) I've heard everything is more expensive down in Australia. Price you pay for living in paradise? The D850 was a stretch for me, even with a good D750 trade in value. :-)

Great video. I use a Canon 5D Mark IV and the feature my images get most benefit from would be the dynamic range. As a Canon user it's interesting to see some of the features of the Nikon - some small touches can make a difference, I like the easy way of covering the viewfinder. Nice images at the end, I liked the one with the sun rays best.

Great video, Julian. I've been loving my D850 for a good five months and no regrets. Fav feature is incredible dynamic range followed by all that resolution which can make it possible to grab a shot under pressure without having to quickly change a lens because there's enough resolution to crop. That resolution also makes it possible to set the camera up perfectly level when vertical lines matter, shoot at a wider angle, then simply crop afterwards without having to try to straighten everything in post-production. Love it.

Focus Stacking is a great boon for me, if you want to keep the shutter speed up, to reduce foliage movement for instance, but dont want to increase your ISO, I shoot wide open, focus on the foreground and then select focus shift shooting. I will typically use 3,4 or 5 shot bracketing with a Focus Step width of say 4, you need to experiment with that one and press start. It will then move the focus point in each image, with just that one press. It is so easy to shoot wide open and get everything sharp from front to back

Hi from the Ottawa Valley, Canada. I have two D850s. Favourite feature is the auto-iso for 'run and gun' - able to lock the shutter speed to avoid motion blur and use a small enough aperture to keep some depth of field.

For me, now a recent owner of a D850, I really appreciate your take on features you like. I recall your previous videos on the D850 and they gave me helpful insight. I have not tried the focus stacking yet, and would like your take on how you use it. Looking forward to using it someday when the composition would benefit. And I would like to see what you have to say about the time lapse feature as well. So far what I like the most is the dynamic range for the same reasons you covered. And I am impressed with the auto focusing, I photograph birds as well. I look forward to the time when many species return and hope to capture them in action, movements we cannot recognize with our human eye. I tried taking video but did poorly, I was not prepared when I had the opportunity which is my fault for not being prepared. I will correct that. I recognized all your images shown at the end from your previous videos. Thanks for sharing.

But as you say, having a solid grounding in the basics is the key bit to getting good photos (just watch my previous vidoe Shoot, Print, Surprise). As I said in the video, all those features generally mak the process of getting a good image easier. They don't actually create a good image for me. :-)

Really interesting info Julian, thanks. I've been considering changing up to the 850 from the 750, and you might have just convinced me! I'm surprised more models don't have the built-in viewfinder cover. I think my old F5 had that feature. Actually, the feature that caught my eye to think about upgrading originally, was the megapixels combined with the ability to convert 35mm transparencies with the special adaptor which I believe is only available for the 850. Cheers!

I've had the D850 since November and found it to be a superb camera, I use the 24-70 2.8 ED VR lens and the 70- 200 2.8 FL ED VR lens and I find it important to have good glass to complement the D850. In low light conditions, the D850 performs superbly and as you commented on the weatherproofing of the camera, it gives you confidence that in poor conditions it won't let you down. I bought a D500 a couple years ago for shooting sports and wildlife. I definitely want to get a D850 next. But I first need to round out my arsenal of lenses. Right now, I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8, a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6. My next couple of lenses to get are a wide-angle, a 24-70mm and an 85mm prime. Then it will be time for the D850.

Hi Julian, great video, I've just subscribed to you channel. I found this video after looking at D850 videos as I have a D750 and I'm not sure if I just want or need the D850. You've shown some good reasons in this video one of one of my big reasons is like you I always forget to cover the eyepiece when doing long exposure. I also have an Olympus E-M1 MKII and I use loads of the features you mentioned like touch screen and focus peaking etc Did you notice a great difference to the D750, I know you said the dynamic range which is a great help but are there enough to make it a need. But new camera day don't come that often and everybody needs a treat now and again Thanks Billy

Thanks Billy, and I really appreciate you subscribing :-) Great to hear you've found the video useful. I'm not sure if the change in dynamic range was "great"...it was definately noticable though. I found there was a lot more data in the shadows so recovery seemed to be easier....but is the difference big enough to justify the upgrade? Well, that's hard to say. Just dynamic range...well, maye, but as a whole package, for me at least, the D850 was worth upgrading from the D750. Not sure if that was any help? lol

I had the D810 and was very happy with it. I bought the D850 a couple of weeks after it was released and have now found my camera for life, meaning it will do everything I want it to to a standard that can produce large prints with fantastic resolution. The flippy out screen has been wonderful for my old knees, no longer requiring me to get into some complex yoga moves to look through the eyepiece. Don't get me wrong the D810 was a fantastic but Nikon has made one of the most rounded cameras ever made in the shape of the D850 for all the reasons you have said in this video . This one I will be living with for a very long time. Keep up the good work Julian :)

Hey Steve, great to hear how happy you are with the D850. I'd almost forgot about the tilting screen. Not because I don't find it useful (I use it a lot), but because I've had it on several other cameras, including the D750, that I forgot to mention it. I agree, I think the D850 will be with me for some years to come! :-)

I’ve been hankering for this camera for ages, so watching this was a mistake, nevertheless it was interesting to hear your thoughts Julian, thank you. I moved to Fuji (XT1) a few years ago,but for me, it was a mistake as I just found it too small and fiddly to handle. I made the jump back to Nikon (D810) late last year and love it. Yes, it’s obviously a lot more weight to carry around but that’s a small price to pay for bringing the joy back into my photography. Hard to pick one favourite feature really, but I guess it would be dynamic range.

And while mirrorless bodies like the Sony definately had some features that DSLRs don't I wasn't really going to miss not having them. I like and know Nikon bodies (I've had one since 2006), and the D850 does everything I really need it to so I stuck with that. Yes, I'm going to the photo show on the Sunday. I posted up a video a few weeks ago with half a plan for a meet up. :-)

I would like to jump in here, for me it's the weather sealing qualities of Nikon DSLR's and the lack of them on Sony bodies. I for one would be very concerned to have a Sony exposed to the elements like the D850 is here, for the Nikon it's not an issue but there's many examples online of Sony's 'going down' in similar situations.

Nice review and very helpful Julian so many thanks as I've been waiting 6-12 months to see how D850 pans out before upgrading from the D810..just a question. I have found that any shutter speed below say 1/30th on a 24-70 and 1/50th or so on a 70-200 with the D810 on a tripod still creates blur due to mirror slap..so every shot in low light means a need for "mirror up"..done a bit of testing using no mirror up but 2-5 sec shutter delay to ensure it's not overall shake via tripod etc but def seems to be mirror slap...really bugs me that every landscape shot needs it..just wondered if you experienced that on your D850 or indeed your D750?...never had an issue on my D4 which is like a machine gun at 10 frames a sec+ but sure that's just down to the 36 mps being much more critical re technique etc...so wondered if you have been using long shutter speeds on the D850 without mirror up and/or delayed shutter with/without cable release?.. (obv in theory in the 3-5 sec delay negates the need for the cable release and I find cable releases a pain in the field most of the time !)

Hey Nigel, I've been using MUP for such a long time that I can't remember a time when I didn't use it. I'm either using a cable release to put the mirror up, and then take a shot, or what tends to happen more often now is that I'm in live view when I take the shot (so the mirror is already up). I still use a cable release in both scenarios. So unforunately, I can't comment to say if there the mirror slap causes blur in longer exposures. :-)

Hi Carky Media! If you liked this D850 video, make sure you check out my D850 playlist (kzread.info/head/PLJU6FMi6Tvo8FhKU2jUnA8T7ZaF4JIUFy). The lav mic I use is the Rode LavMic+ with a Zoom H1 recorder (all the links are in the video description). As for the audio change, well, to say that I had "switched" audio would be kind. To be honest, it looks like I had forgot to press record on my Zoom H1, so I had to use the audio from the camera (Sony RX100M4). I normally check audio for every take, but for some reason I screwed up for that scene. :-)

Thank you for sharing your videos. I have recently upgraded to the 850 from the 610. I was so excited but am actually having trouble adjusting. I dont think my pictures seem quite as crisp as my old ones which doesnt make sense. I also seem to be having over exposed pictures often which is not usual for me. Any suggestions on what could be going on?

Thank you for watching and congrats on your purchase. In terms of the over exposure, first thing to check is your histogram when you are shooting. If that looks right, but the image comes out over exposed, just double check you haven't switched on exposure compensation, and make sure you've got Active-D lighting switched off. Also, shoot in raw with a flat profile, and see what the image looks like. :-)

I didn't have enough for the D850 but I do have a D500 on the way. I would LOVE to see a Focus stacking video. For landscapes I would have thought it would have been something you used often. I would very much like to see what you think if you took a focus-stacked landscape photo...

Cheers Simon, the D500 is an awesome camera. I've heard it called a DX version of the D5...so you are sure to be happy with it! I definately will look at the focus stacking in the future. I'm a bit of a "lazy" post processor, so I guess I've always tried to as much as possible in camera. But with these great features I might be a bit fool for not trying it properly! :-)

The details I get ouf of shots, especially over/under exposed ones. I do have to ask though, why did you get rid of your D850?

@@jbairdexp thank you so much for replying. I jumped from the D7200, so you can understand my enthusiasm for the D850. I don't know if I'll ever go mirrorless. But if I did, it would be the Z system. Also, I don't want to have to invest more money. All my lenses are full frame. I don't believe in getting adapters for lenses, so the option of using my F mount with an adapter is out of the question. In the end, the D850 exceeds all my needs. It's a beast of a camera in my opinion. Thank you again so much for replying. It made my day.

Hi Julian, great review Thanks. Just ordered mine 850. Shooting now D700. What are the main benefits comapred those two, beside mpixel and dynamic range. I wonder also is it easier to get perfect image straight póut of the camera with D850 compared to D700 in my case ? Are you usning Nokons OEM software or only Lightroom (or other)? Thanks!

Thanks Paul. I've never shot with the D700 before (though I heard it's a great camera), but given the age of the D700 compared to the D850, I would expect there will be significant differences between them. Autofocus will likely be another stand out feature that you will notice a difference in. Getting a good image straight out the camera will be easier due to many of the features such as the auto-focus and dynamic range. You should give this a read.... www.dpreview.com/articles/1592140406/should-you-upgrade-to-a-nikon-d850?slide=5 I only use LR... I don't think anyone uses the Nikon software! Doesn't have to be LR though, CaptureOne is a quality editor I've heard. Thanks for watching, :-)

Hi Nigel, Let me say from the outset the D850 is awesome. Mine is 2 months old and now for sale. Why.. because it made me lazy with the live view autofocus, and focus on screen, never trusting it and wasting time on the split screens checking it. The pull out screen is a luxury that I never used. My camera of choice Nikon D3x, after selling mine I was lucky enough to get another as new. Good old fashioned manual focus suits me better so I can concentrate more on the image and less on the features, and 25 Mp is enough for me. Features vs Benefits :-))) Don't let me put you off buying a D850 it is awesome. Ron
