Nikon D850 | Photographing Boondall Wetlands

Following on from my last video, I put my Nikon D850 focus settings to a real world test at the Boondall Wetlands in Queensland, Australia. The Wetlands were full of bird life this day to photograph. The D850 performed really well, as usual.
Camera & Lens used:
Nikon D850
Nikon AF-S 80-400mm F/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens
(Almost all of the still shots in this video are at 400mm - cropped)

Thank you so much Adrian. I came across your video just yesterday and you have taught me so much about my (very new to me!) Nikon D850, especially how to set up for quick change of focus for varying conditions. It is also great to have a local Aussie doing these and using local areas we can all get to!

Ooh a new environment centre - must check it out when we're next up in Qld. So many beautiful birds - especially that sacred kingfisher and the osprey! (Much better than the bin chickens! Hahahaha) Love the kookaburra shots.

Beautiful photos, Adrian. That was an amazing number of species you were able to photograph. I haven't done a lot of bird photography so this video and the last have been very helpful to me in terms of settings. I am on the east coast of the U.S. and there are a lot of wildlife refuges so I think I will be better equipped the next time I visit them.

HI Adrian, very good ideas with the set up on the D850. Ive just got mine, from a D810 and have the same lens as you, im trying to work out the best settings for very fast moving dogs at the beach. Ive found it very hit and miss with Group, sometimes its absolutely spot on but mostly its just off, and I need them to be sharp. Of course, im cropping a bit in edit, so im not sure how hard im being on my own shooting, but with my dog shots, I like the eyes to be pin sharp. When im using the 80-400 they are generally between 10-30m from me, and can cause a great deal of splash. I can't move the focus point fast enough on single, but as you say in the videos, its unbelievably good when they are still. the group picks up sand, water etc and when they are moving at top pace I feel the tracking might hit on any part of the body, not just the face. Do you think the 25 point might work better? im going to try it out tomorrow morning anyways..thanks mate

Cheers Tim, thanks for watching mate. I went from a D810 to the D850 as well. I think I know what you can do with your dogs running. Set the D850 to AF-C as I did in this video. With the focus, hold in the AF button on the left side of the camera and with the front dial, flick it over to the 3D focus setting. This should now track your dog. Go back to your menu. Turn the AF activation on your shutter button back to "on". If your dog is running, half press down the shutter button and the little square with dot inside it should now follow your dog around the viewfinder. I think your hit and miss ratio should improve a lot that way, Try it out and see how you go. Cheers. ps. you can test it out by having someone walk towards you.

Great video! What lens do you use? I have tried to photograph birds but the 70-200 does not get it done. The shallow DOF works so well.
