I just bought one second hand, less than75k clicks and in good shape, still with 1 year warranty from the shop. The reason is that our baby daughter has been born just now, and this is an amazing experience, this also means that I cannot dabble in my film photography as much as I used to do. Now I am looking forward to using the D810 to greatly speed up my photography and still use all my Nikkor AF-D and AI-S primes, in the little bit of time left after taking care of our baby.

My D810 (and D750 for that matter) is still a fantastic camera, and I LOVE the RAW files I get from it. It's a little beefy in this day and age, but more importantly, the 36 megapixels are the absolute sweet spot for me (as a landscape/nature photographer). Yeah, I'll probably never get rid of mine.

Thank you so much for this review! I lost my old camera years ago and hadn't been able to take the landscape/wildlife pictures i wanted to with just my phone. Recently, I started to look for a new camera to get back into photography, and I picked the D810 as it seemed like a sturdy camera, however i was nervous about the quality of it. Your in-depth review however has made me feel confident in my choice and has given me lots of inspiration to try photographing new things out of my usual comfort zone. I also wanted to thank you for making a calm and slowpaced yet informative video. Its easy to keep up with. I have watched a few of your other videos and I feel way more informed and excited to get back into photography, So thank you again!! :)

The D810 is my main camera right now, and I have to say that I did order a Z8 just today. Yeah, I got my 810 used for $1000 back in 2017 and its been my main camera ever since. There has really been no reason to upgrade. Will keep it as a second when my Z8 arrives. I've never loved a camera more than the D810. I can only hope that I'll love the Z8 as much.

I've had a D810 since they first came out, and it was my first new decent camera, so it's a bit special to me. I mainly shoot landscapes at night, and for me it's perfect. The image quality is excellent and it feels like a "real" camera. After losing inspiration for a few years and selling all my lenses apart from a 50mm manual, i've just bought a 14-24 and a 24-70. It feels soooo good to be using the D810 again after taking "snaps" with an iphone and Canon G7x Mk3.

I haven’t been doing much photography in recent years so if need be I’ve always fallen back on my old D300 that I’ve had since 2009. It’s held up really well over the years and still takes really good pictures. Yesterday I purchased a used but clean D810 and am really excited to start using it. Hopefully it’s as reliable as my old D300.

Many thanks for the review! I've had a Nikon D700 for a few years now and it has been a great workhorse. Last week a local photographer "gave" me his D810 as he has gotten into the Z series as well as the smaller Olympus models. I was thrilled to get it even though it has somewhere north of 190K shutter actuations. I'm hoping I can give me a couple more years of use. I've been wanting to try the D810 with its 36mp screen and compare it to my D700 images. I'll let you know how it works out.

Great review! Thank you for producing it! I have a D800e, which was a predecessor of a D810. I agree: great camera. The resolution is insane: I guess the quantity really is a quality of its own. That being said, for most situations, I prefer output of a D3 or D4s. The D800e’s images are less vibrant somehow. Maybe it can be enhanced in post processing? Perhaps, I didn’t bother. Great resolution. 👍

Cropping is something I do all the time in studio shoots love having the option to recompose my shot and not have a compromise in quality. Part of me not upgrading is to match the megapixels in a mirrorless is a huge cost. The best thing about the f mount lenses is they’re all cheaper now so you can get professional grade pictures with a lot less money and adapt the lenses later for newer cameras.

It’s what I learned my photography skills on. When Minolta sold to Sony, I moved on to Canon which is where I’ve been up until a year ago. Switched to Nikon from Canon a couple of years back because of the better dynamics. When I got the D810, no Canon even came close to the D810‘s (Sony) sensor quality. I’m thinking about upgrading to a D850 for those 10 extra MP and the 4K Video, but there’s no way I’ll get rid of the D810. No Z system is gonna make me more money than a D810 for what I do, I don’t quite see the point ditching everything I have (also since my main studio flashes don’t work with a Z8+). It is a fantastic piece of equipment, and even though my Canons serve as backup, using them pains me a bit, for certain things.

I've jumped to the new mirrorless system and proudly own a Z9 along with some new Z glass. I still own my old D810 as a second camera and also because it has a feature that the new mirrorless cannot match. It has a flash sync speed of 1/320s and for outside shoots it can be a huge difference. I do wish Nikon would address this little issue with a firmware update sometime in the future hopefully. I was thinking the Z9 being shutterless and all would easily give me 1/400s like some Sonys.

The cameras all have different processors. The D810 even with its larger than Z 8 photosites is running on a Expeed 4, the Z 6 on the Expeed 6, and the Z 8 on the Expeed 7. The D810 is not a BSI sensor. Both the Z bodies are BSI (Yes, the Z 8’s stacked sensor has BSI technology) which itself is about a stop better in light collection. The Z 8 should be better than the D810. But the 24.5mp BSI sensors will win out.

Brother i have a question that no one has quite answered..haha .lets c if u can So lets take a good screen .. phone or tablet which is max 4k ie 8mp or lets make it 10. And u got a pic on it from this d810 which is 36 mp. The tricky question is how does the phone/device know which pixel to show?? Cos the max the device can display is 8mp.. a very good example is the autumn tree pic @4:00 ... Wont the leaves look smudged? I bet they do cos it's a 36mp pic viewed on a max 8mp screen. Am i right or missing something here?

Great question, and I'll throw another factor into your equation. Let's start with known factors, for example, the iPhone 15 screen resolution is 2556 x 1179 = 3MP. My video resolution was 3840x2160 (4K) = 8MP. So we're scaling 8MP down to 3, to view on a phone. I'm guessing these devices have some calculation for scaling images, on which pixels to show and which to "hide."

@@RunNGunPhoto @RunNGunPhoto there are few articles on the internet about less megapixels and images looking sharper on the screen. That autumn tree shot for instance,,, how does my iphone or android know which leaf to display when the image is 'fit to screen" size? But if it was anything around 6 megapixels or lower it would fit great and every detail would be visible. Try it yourself;)) these low mp cameras like nikon d50, d70 etc are available for pennies in the used market. Or if youre lucky almost free at a thrift store. Take same image with d810 and d70 and view them on a tablet. I bet you'll see the difference;)))

Of course it‘s still a good camera. But in landscape photography, especially in low light conditions, the modern BSI sensors make a difference. BSI was an important step forward, and the D810 is just a step short of that. And this is the main reason the price of the 810 has plummeted so deep. But yes, for it‘s used price, still a good entry into full frame high resolution.

When it comes to BSI vs FSI Sensors, I can't really fault the d810 for being old. I took great low light portraits and landscape images with this camera before I knew was BSI sensors were. Faulting past tech for not having future tech is an apples to oranges comparison in my opinion.

I disagree with low light focussing. Next to useless with moving subjects. The digital dial on the left is also lame: why waste space on a white balance button and an ISO button that is hard to reach? There is no auto mode and the mode selection is awkward. I prefer D610 and D750 style - those are also smaller and lighter cameras. This being said, the sensor is ok. Not brilliant in llow light, but quite good in general. With heavy use, the rubber gets loose and is not easy to fix. Would still recommend it over mirrorless because I like DSLRs.

All autofocus is going to be nearly useless without light. That issues is compounded with moving subjects. None of the issues here are unique to the D810.
