Why make a review of a camera that was released in 2012? Watch this video to find out and why I think the Nikon D800 is one of the greats.
Welcome to Vahagraphy. This is my official review of my own personal Nikon D800 DSLR. I purchased this beast at launch in 2012 and in this video I will go over what my Nikon D800 has been through in 9 years of constant shooting.
Nikon shooters Nikonians check this out.
We all have personal favorites. The Nikon D800 camera is one of my favorites to use over the years. In this video I will tell you how its been shooting with it. I will also show you some battle scars the D800 has over the many productive years of photography.
Its 2020 and in this video I will review this ground breaking 2012 camera and tell you why this was a big deal back in the day.
This video is my official review of the Nikon Nikkor D800 DSLR digital full frame FX camera.
Not the Nikon D800e or the Nikon D810. The original Nikon D800 baby.
I purchased this camera at launch in 2012 along side the Nikon D4 at the time .

Glad you enjoyed my D800 video Sheel. Yes the camera might be old and clanky to some. It might be considered to some irrelevant. But to me and to you, it gets the job done. I turn it on and its ready to shoot. The focus is spot on every time. It might not have 300 focus points or go 100mph but it works and works very well. I was using a friend's mirrorless camera over the weekend, NOt nikon, another brand, and I was wishing i had my old friend next to me , the D800. Sure a camera might produce amazing results, it also has to be durable and usable and friendly and fast. :)

Bought a D3, and I've never seen such an image quality before from a camera, not even in the newest cameras. This thing has the best colors I've ever seen, the newer cameras may have more megapixels, slightly better noise performance, but these older cameras have something special which can't be replicated in newer cameras.

Thank you Lonnie for your amazing comment. I appreciate it very much. Yes the D800 would be an amazing upgrade from the D610. Find on thats in good condition. Check the shutter count before you buy and check the bottom of the camera. This will give you a good blueprint as far as condition goes. As far as price. Today is the right time to buy. I see the D800 go for as low as $500 sometimes. This camera has been amazing to me and hopefully this will be just as amazing to you aswell. I have a video on my channel about buy used on Craigslist. I give some tips on that. CHeck it out. As far as images goes. I will make a video soon on images taken from this camera over the years. Again thank you for your comment. Rock n Roll

Got a D800E from launch, still rocking this bad boy! My three favorite memories with this camera were my first trip to Orlando back in 2014 where I took some great shots of all the attractions especially the amazing Holy Land Experience which has unfortunately closed back in February 2020, a trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai back in 2016 where I managed to also shoot some amazing wildlife video, and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia back in 2017. I remember taking a leap of faith with the D800E as the talk about possible moiré was at the tip of everyone's tongue. Fortunately, the leap paid off as I never encountered a shooting situation where moiré was visible. Although I'm up for a D850, I would not let go of this body because, as Vahagan said, it has little to no value in the market these days and the actual value I would still get from it far exceeds the pennies I'd get from it towards the purchase of a D850.

Great video, over 340,000 shots is a lot of use for the camera. Nikon truely is a a great brand. I bought mine used and it had about 10,000 shutter count for under $1,000 Canadian and I saw another one with about 12,000 shutter count for $1,000 Canadian and I couldn't resist letting it pass by me so I bought it for my back up camera. It's just about ready to use, I have some 50mm lens and I have to get the CF card for back-up memory. Great video and story of your D800.

It is nice to see your D800 has so many 'clicks' on it; I bought mine new and it has only 29,100 'clicks' - and it still looks new. I initially replaced my D200 with the D800 for a first class trip my daughter gave me as a birthday gift to Athens and Rome so I could photograph the ancient Greek and Roman ruins in high resolution. I later bought the D810 new, which spared my D800 from much more use. Most recently, I purchased two new D850s. Now, with these four Nikon camera bodies, I help guarantee that my 13 very best professional Zeiss and Nikkor lenses will likely always be coupled to a great high resolution F-mount Nikon camera. Thanks for all the great videos!

In 2010/2011 I kept checking the nikonroumors site, where a new, high-resolution camera was announced. Then came the earthquake and Fukushima in Japan and production was moved to Thailand, but then there was also a flood. But finally at the end of 2011 I was able to order my D800E, so that at the beginning of 2012, I was one of the first proud owners in Germany. It was love at first sight. The change from my D80 to the D800E was phenomenal and since then it has faithfully accompanied me in cities, but above all on high mountains, in deserts and in the arctic. It has sweated and was freezing with me and we've both gotten wet in the rain many times, but it has always worked flawlessly so far. The new system cameras, especially the Z 7, sound interesting, but why change? I guess I'll be shooting with my D800E for a long time in the future 😊

I was lucky to get a D800 in the first batch released in California while the big on-line dealers like B&H had 6-7 months backlog. Small mom and pop stores were given high priority by Nikon. I have 384,000 frame count, never a problem. I got a D850 later and used it a lot but after adding the Z6 as a light small travel camera I found it to be excellent for all my work on studio, portraiture event and architecture. So the DSLRs sit on the shelf along with their 18 F , mount fast lenses. I loved using the D800 and still get it out sometimes to sessions where a backup or two are used of when a second shooter is needed. It is definitely a pro-grade camera. Wiith decent light, the image quality is really the sweet spot for most serious work, less difference is noticed between 36 mpx compared to the D850 vs D800 than the jump from 12mpx to 24. There is not much on the used market for less than $1000 that can get even close to the value and image quality of a D800. The only problem I had was one of the cheap Chinese grips gave out at 230,000 clicks, but it only cost $65 so it was a real bargain. All my DSLR have grips so switching between the handling of the Z6 and D8x0 gripped bodies seems like a very big jump. Removing the grip however and the D800 is a lot smaller feeling when switching bodies. At the time of its introduction there was nothing to compete with the D800which had far more dynamic range and blow out recovery than anything under a medium format. For a serious portrait or commercial or wedding photographer, it is a bargain now on the used market. Like you, I never shoot burst, all were deliberate clicks

Another happy D800 real user. Glad to hear your success story on the legend that is the Nikon D800. I remember when the D800 came out. THe internet was a blaze about the AA filter. Ohh NO. AN AA filter. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSTED TO GET SHARP IMAGES?? haha remember that. remember everyone dogging this camera. The D800 was widely over looked and under appreciated my many. Everyone flocked over to the D800E. Not me. I kept my D800 and used it to its fullest. The camera delivers plenty of detail and like you said, was a total breakthrough and the closest thing to medium format. However the features and speed of a D800 vs Medium format in those days. You really can't compare them. YEs in today's camera tech, the D800 is still more than most peoples needs.

Just got a Nikon D800 yesterday with only 4,300 clicks on it. It came with a 24-70 f/2.8. Got both for $1200. I have enough camera gear and really didn’t need it, but I couldn’t pass up the deal. So far, I am LOVING the D800 and might end up making it my main portrait camera.

I'm watching this video in 2023. I still own a D800 that I bought back in 2013, and even though I rarely use it these days in the mirrorless age, it still functions and usually goes in one of my bags as a back-up (just in case). I mainly shoot Architecture but also do portrait photography and this amazing camera served me well and I find it still relevant even today for a substantial body of work. Thanks for the video!

One of the greatest cameras I ever owned .... I recently used this as a second body (with a 50mm 1.8) along with a Canon 5d Mark III with a 24-70mm II... the Nikon blew the canon out of the water ( it was a indoor/outdoor music festival, day into night low light + different lighting situations) the cameras were out through the paces, the Nikon images and workflow annihilates the canon. I love the d800 so much

Amazing video, I've had my D800 since March 2013 and see absolutely no reason to get rid of it because it still takes amazing photographs which is why we own digita cameras! My other FX Nikon camera body is the smaller and lighter D600 which I carry more often for general photography but when I'm doing cityscapes or landscapes it's the D800 + Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 or my Nikkor AF-s 35 f/1.8 G lenses. I hate to admit it but I recently purchased the Canon 5Ds, a camera I wanted when it first came out in 2015 but it was almost $4000.00 back then so I couldn't afford one. In November I started thinking about updating my Canon 6D and while researching camera bodies on the B&H website I found the 5Ds for $1299 and I had to have it. High end Nikon and Canon mirrorless bodies using 45mp sensors are still overpriced so I'm sticking with my old dSLR's for now. BTW, although I love my ancient D800 the image quality from the 5Ds is a big improvement.

Hi, Lee here in England. Have just watched you on KZread after buying a D800 from my local camera store last week.It has 286,000 clicks to date and apart from having paint rubs on the base and is missing some of the covers ( which I have ordered in through EBay) it is fully functional and came complete with box, manual, and strap ( never used ). I realise it is a gamble and if the shutter packs in when the guarantee runs out which is 12 months, for £365 purchase price , Ithink it’s worth the risk if I need to fork out £200 odd pounds for a replacement shutter. Anyway, enjoyed the video, stay safe 👍

I’ve been shooting Nikon since the mid seventies, starting with the F series to my current D850. Have owned too many Nikons to list but still have a N2000, N6006, and F5 for film cameras, have owned a D100, D200, and D800E prior to the D850, still have the D200 and D800E, traded the D100 for the D200 (it was never love with the D100 but it was my digital SLR and probably my lack of digital understanding that tainted that body). All still work perfectly, I have never experienced a body or Nikkor lens failure ever and I truly pushed each one of them. The D800E I kept was back up to my primary D800E body so it has a low shutter count, perhaps 8K. The D850 is a superior body in every way (save pop up flash omission) but there’s just something about the D800E that keeps me from selling it, it just feels right and so familiar in the way it reacts; a sweet spot camera when shooting static, well lite subjects. JPEGS are just OK but my goodness the RAW files are delicious! All that said I see lots of hate aimed at Nikon and for the life of this old dude I doesn’t see why, they have been superlative through the years and have never once let me down as a professional and now as an advanced enthusiast. I know the last shutter press God gives me will be on a Nikon body with a fast Nikkor lens attached, probably (hopefully?) the magic 58 1.4. Thanks for the interesting vid and Nikon support, refreshing and much appreciated. Ciao.

Your very Welcome Steve. I love it when other like minded photographers appreciate and recognize what Nikon has to offer. Most all my photography peers tout Canon and sony and I'm usually the loan wolf sporting my Nikons. Like you, I've been with Nikon since I picked up a camera. From the old film days to the launch of digital cameras. I have owned practically all of them. Not counting the D5 or D6, just see no need to upgrade my current D4. It does everything I need it to do. And as far as mirrorless goes, I love them too. Im rocking the Z6 right now and again don't need the upgrade z6ii for now. As far as why I love Nikon. I think Im just so used to the system, its comes so natural for me. Nikon glass has been in my opinion so much sharper than canon's counterparts. I could be wrong however. Ive owned canon too and yes canon produces amazing skin tones, better than Nikon but Nikon's glass to me is glass. Anyway glad you enjoyed the video. More to come. appreciate your comments . There was talk on the D800 having an amazing sensor for video. To bad Nikon never had an AF system in place for video for DSLR but it has this killer sensor. D800 original is a workhorse. Mine is proof. Your's as well.

I own a D800E, which I bought, I think, in October 2022. I wanted a full-frame camera, because I had begun using the Lensbaby Burnside 35 and SOL45. I have been very pleased with the performance of the D800E. I also shoot with a D500 or D7500. considerably newer than the D800E. I am anticipating that my D800E will be just as serviceable as your D800. I carry it with a 50mm 1.8, a 35mm f2, a 14mm f2.8, or one of my lensbabies.

Very interesting the comments on its integral strength a few months after I received the camera and whilst connected to a Nikon 70/200 my 10 year old daughter playing fashion photographer with her friend dropped it down a flight of Spanish steps (I advised her on her choice of lens at a later date!) both survived and after an inspection by Nikon no faults were detected! Incredible! The lens hood was another story! 😂

The worst lens to take a tumble on your camera. Its long and heavy and can do some damage. I dropped a D850 with the 70-200 vrii on 2 feet on carpet and the camera back focused ever since. D4 survived spanish stairs. Amazing . thanks for sharing.

I can fully confirm your experience. I got the D800 used in 2015, which rendered my D7000 to backup camera position. Later I got the D800e, also used and then my D800 became my backup. I shot a lot of shows at New York Fashion Week ( A LOT!!!) which is the only time I have a lot of actuations. Because of that, I wore out the mirror box on both cameras, which had to be replaced. The rubber cover that you are missing is also gone on mine. I had a few mishaps with the camera, which damaged the vertical grip, which I had to replace and also damaging the lenses, but the D800/e bodies stayed solid like a tank. I am still using both cameras for my daily work in real estate photography, but also for all my fashion and magazine work, or corporate headshots, etc. While everybody around me is raving about mirrorless cameras, exclaiming all Oooohhhs, and Aaaahhhs about them, I just go to my next job and deliver, picking up checks (mostly wireless transfers...) and referrals. If you would ask me what my next camera would be, I think that one isn't born yet and I don't worry, until my 800's tell me that they want to retire. All photos shot with my D800/e's, except the few drone photos, those are Hasselblad. instagram.com/udorphoto/ instagram.com/aperture_f8_nyc/

I love this camera. I have made most of my best images with mine. I got into digital with a d70 and traded up to the d300, then went for the d800 when it came out and was such an amazing advance in tech for the Nikon line. It has never failed me, and has reliably made great resolved images, as long the idiot behind it(me) is in a good creative space.

Hiya. I’m thinking of getting back into photography and I’ve had my eyes on this camera for a while, however, my budget would only allow me to get a used one. My question is: should I buy a d800 in a good condition (few cosmetic marks) but with around 150k actuations or one that has normal wear and tear but has broken glass on the top LCD and 39k actuations? Both have been tested by the sellers and they claim not to have any issues. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Welcome back to the world of photography AC40. I would skip both. hold off until you find one with no crack the lcd and one with less clicks. I would look into finding one with under 50K clicks and perfect lcd. There are cameras out there. I know people that have purchased with less than 5k clicks. Be patient, One will become available sooner or later. nd if not maybe look into a D810.

I've just purchased a D800 with only 38 clicks on it! Got it for a great price. This is my first step into full frame photography, do you have any must have lens recommendations for this camera? I currently just have the Sigma 105 f/2.8 macro. Your video helped a lot when deciding to buy a camera that was released almost a decade ago! I think it's going to continue to be a strong option for many years to come as well.

I am currently using D800E, what I found out is that even for low light, I am able to get RAW and post-process it using the latest state of the art algorithm. Like DxO photo lab 4 with deepPrime. The image with ISO up to 2500 is still very usable. The only complaint about me is the focus area. I am having an issue focus on the not center spot probably because I am shooting f1.4 most of the time. Not sure if it is NIKON's fault. Overall, it is one of the amazing cameras, and you can get it for around 800 USD 2nd hand makes it a no brainer for a still shooter. Awesome deal.

This video and the one of the D 4 is very helpful. Thank you for sharing your many years of experience w/ the D 800. I have some questions. If you don't wnt to use 36 Megapixels, can you downscale the RAW files in-camera to 24, 20 or 16 Megapixels? And in terms of usage, what three lenses do you use in wedding photography?

  • @Vahagraphy

    @Vahagraphy

Great question. and btw Thank you Ike. Glad you found these videos helpful. The D4 and D800 do not have the feature to downsize raw files. JPGs yes but not raw. This feature came out in later models in the Nikon lineup. My 3 go to must lenses for weddings, bare bones if I only have 3 is, the 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 , and an 85 1.4, or 85, 1.8., Thats the 3 for me, but I say the magic number is actually 4 lenses, I must have a macro lens in my back aswell. 105 2.8 macro, and after that ofcourse a super wide zoom option like a 16-35 or a 14-24, then we get into a fisheye and a nifty 50.

@@Vahagraphy I was looking to get the D800E because it;s so affordable now & has better low light performance than the D800. I still use my D700 & D7100 and looking to upgrade. I don't really need all that 36 Megapixels. The D4 is about right at 16 MP but a lot heavier. I really like the D4. Which cmera focuses faster in low light, D800 or D4? And which one has better image quality? And thanks for sharing your lenses. I already have the 85mm f1.8, which is my fave lens. Nifty 50, 100mm macro from Tokina, and 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D which is not VR. I just need a wide lens. I hope you can make more behind the scenes wedding videos. Thanks!

Great review 👍. The d800 was the megapixel master in it's time compare to d700 ( with only 12 mp sensor ) but as you said high ISO is not really perfect compare to d700 . By the way Do you think that at a time when DSLRs seem to have given way to mirrorless, spending on a camera like d700 or d800 to move from apsc to full frame Is it wise even in good condition and reasonable price?
