I own 2 D800's... I have been thinking about "upgrading" to a D810 for a couple of years. I shoot a lot of real estate with them.I do some portrait work and a wedding or two or three per year. I use the D800 for portraits and a D3s along with a D800 for weddings. I have a D600 for "fun". I guess what I'm trying to say is that the D800 is probably the best bang for the buck on the used market. I haven't shot a D800e or a D810 but for about $1200.00 (give or take used as of 2.15.17) the files that the D800 produces are awesome. I find that in my real estate and portrait work the files are just a pleasure to work with. For real estate the amount of latitude from the D800 saves me a lot of time - I can expose for highlights and tweak shadows if needed. For portraits all I need is a piece of sharp glass and if possible an off camera strobe and people love the images. Again, I've thought about a D810 and the D750 but I'm good. The D800 (series) is an awesome camera. Maybe I'll upgrade when Nikon releases the D810 successor (and I'll get a D810). PS - great vids! Joe

I'm doing more and more portraiture, and this thing seems to be evolving really well, but I have a D7100, and I'm thinking to upgrade to FX specially for a more comfortable and bigger viewfinder and the great 24-70mm lens. I'm thinking to look for a used low shutter count D800E. Does it make sense to buy it right now in 2017 considering that it is a 5+ years camera model?( Well, maybe the one I get left the factory 3 years ago, who knows). Should I do it or choose a used D750 or even a D610?

I've been shooting F-series Nikons professionally for 50 years and admit to being addicted to them. I've been trying to convince myself to save some money and buy a D750, but for my market, the D810 just makes more sense. I don't need an anti-aliasing filter to protect me from situations I never encounter, but I do need the ability to get the most out of my image and the D810 will allow me to do that. Thanks for an excellent review!

I have 2 D800s. I bought them when they first came out. Maybe I should have sprung a little more than got the 800e but the image quality out of these cameras are simply incredible. I compress the RAW in the camera and the files end up being about 1 Mb per pixel. Compressed RAW files are usually around 35-40 megs. Like you have the best iMac I could buy 2 years ago. These cameras are really overkill and I just got a D500 for when I need more reach and speed. I am sure the 810s are a little better but not that much better. It just blows me away with the DETAIL these cameras capture even though both of mine has the AA filter in them.

I love my D810... in fact, I'm afraid of Nikon's replacement offering because I fear the same thing you mentioned... they'll probably throw out some huge 50MP+ sensor in it and I really don't want that. But I do want some of the other recent tech that's coming in the D5/D500, particularly the improved AF. I'm not sure I'm willing to deal with 50MP+ just for it though haha.

Totally agree Ken I have this beautiful beast too, it is the cats whiskers, Nikon's flagship for sure. I think going any high megapixels would make it impractical in field use with even bigger file size. Then we get into medium format Hass territory. Once again I valued your opinion and picked up a Nikon D800. I am so impressed on the images it takes! I first saw your video when I was getting ready to switch from mirrorless to DSLR I picked up the Nikon D 7100. So I watched a couple more videos on your recommended lenses and I picked up the Nikon 35-70mm f2.8d and the tokina 100 m m f 2. 8 macro which is the cat's ass!!!!!! And because I was taking a nice amount of nature shots of animals in that I was doing some cropping I was thinking about going higher and megapixels so I saw your video about the D810 and the D800 series Nikon's. So I found a screaming deal on a D800 for 550 bucks and it is insane. The problem I was having now was trying to upload the images on my laptop and for a year old laptop with 12 gigs of RAM and and i5 processor it would take forever to download one picture with my CF card reader. So I grabbed an adapter and I plug the CF card reader into my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 cell phone and it took less than 3 seconds to upload my image to Adobe Lightroom. So I'm going to use my cell phone upload all my images and then use my laptop to edit them. but I just want to say thank you I've never valued someone's opinion so much on KZread about products and so far you're batting 1000!!!

These videos are the reason I have held off for the D810. I will just keep saving until I can get one, but I am ok with my 2 D700's in the meantime. That aside I like the D810 grip better than the D750, the grip on the D750 is too small for my hands. That said though I understand why many like the D750 if they don't want to spend extra money on the D810 and feel they want the wi fi and flipppy screen. The D750 is probably a better travel companion for those who want light weight and compactness. Always pros and cons to be measured.

Erin Taylor the 810 is no better at low light focusing. I actually think it’s pretty bad. And this is with my 70-200 VR2. Now the D500, that’s a different story. I compare with same lens and it nails focus every time but maybe once. 810 struggles with everything.

I used to have D800. I got used for the big RAW files, but at the end I sold it when I realized it's not me that craps the focus in pictures, its the camera! It took me some time but then I figureed it out: I cant trust my D800 focus systm, or I can trust it to backfocus. As a work tool, I had to sell it and when the time came I chose to buy new D750 over the D810. I do love its focus system and the fact files are smaller made it easier for me to choose it, though I do miss the sync port in the front, and I would prefer no AA filter. Other than that it is no less than the D810 in my opinion. I make beautifull pictures with it (and my D3 which is still a great camera to have in your bag). As I see it, in most of my use the D750 performs as well as the D810. Sure there are more pixels (which I dont need) and more dynamic range but in most cases It doesnt matter, So why paying more for the same outcome?? I do want a bigger better camera body to use, as the D810, but If those are the differences between the 2 bodies, than as for now my winner was the D750 and I dont regret it for a moment. I would love to see a true successor to nikon D700! Same body with 20-24 MPX sensor. Then you'ld be able to call a real nikon flagship camera, cause in my opinion a 36 mpx camere is a niche camera.

Hi ken, what do you think of the D610? From I can gather, I think the internals of the 610 are basically the same as the d800. The sensor is probably from a different stable, but larger photo sites in the 610 puts you in the same image quality ball park as the higher resolution sensor on the 800. I suppose the 810 is a cut above with the m-filter out, although in practice I doubt it makes much difference. Love your photographic reviews, totally agree.

Hey Ken, I love your videos. Getting a bunch of great lens from your suggestions. Heck my wife loves the outcome so much she wants me to get back to photography so she can get a good portrait album. So here I am...needing your help deciding what camera I should buy. I had a d750 but sold it a year ago :( I'm looking to get back to full frame nikon and debating between d750, d800e, d810, and d850. Budget wise, I can afford the d850 but no extra lens. I already had the original nikon 24-70 f2.8 and the voigtlander 50mm f1.4. If I get the d810, I probably can squeeze in a 40mm voigtlander plus a nikon 105mm or 135mm f2 DC. I love the d750 but want to experience something new. The good thing is d750 is cheapest and I probably can get even more lens or flash with the extra cash. What is your suggestion? I mostly shoot portrait and landscape but quite often caught myself in dimmed light situation as well. Just not sure if the d850 is worth the extra $1000+. Thanks man

I would love a D850, of course. But unless I sell a couple of my mountain bikes or can live without a lens for a couple of months following buying the 850, no it is not in my budget. I have a GH4 and GX85 that I use now that I have used professionally for my event photography thus far and clients have been happy, but I have to imagine the 750 would be worlds better than either of those in low light, given that that those are Micro 4/3 cameras... or perhaps I will just wait to save enough for the 850 and until it is in stock regularly, and then pull the trigger on that. I have just started my LLC back in August, so I do not have lots of gigs lined up yet anyway. I have a regular day job that I am mostly involved with, which I do not need that camera for...decisions decisions.

645Z is a digital medium format 51 mp Sony CMOS sensor not film, same sensor as in the Hasselblad and Phase One. Body on the 645Z is $6900 vs $20k on the Phase. I think the sensor is a third larger than full frame. As with all cameras there is a lot of differing opinion on it. 645Z was a big step up from the 645D. I was curious of your thoughts because a few people felt that the D810 with the Zeiss Otus 55 was a superior option to med format. I know you felt that lens was a $5,000 terd. From the images I saw between the 810 and the 645Z I felt the Med format beat it out but not by $4000 more.

My spouse currently has a Nikon D800 as well as Nikon D750 which he recently bought new 2 months ago for about $2K CAD. He's considering buying a used D7100 (approx $600 CAD) based upon a previous video recommendation of yours. I managed to convince him that instead of owning two FX cameras, he should have one FX and one DX. Some of the primary benefits being he could borrow some of my DX lenses (e.g., Nikon 12-24 and Nikon 10.5) as well as borrow my beloved 70-300 FX lens which would be a 400 equivalent on the Nikon D7100 DX body. His primary interest is landscape photography with not much interest in event or bird photography. Which camera would you recommend that he sell, presuming he could get either $1,200 CAD for his used D800 with less than 13K actuations or $1,600 CAD for his relatively new D750 with 3K actuations. Also, would you recommend that he buy the 18-35mm FX lens with the remaining proceeds from the sale of one of these cameras or instead use my 12-24mm Nikon lens, not sure if any one is better than the other? Always value your advice.

Ken I love everything about my D810 except Nikon's color processing for jpeg's (that yellow green ). Now I shoot in Raw almost all the time, but for quick gigs where I'd like to just hand of medium jpeg's I find it a bit lackluster. It's great for files that you will put through the whole workflow, but not hand-off in my experience. What's your take on this and since you've had a lot of bodies, how would you compare it to some others either from Nikon, Fuji, Canon in terms of the built in profiles (standard, portrait, etc)?

I have one D750 and one D800. I'm considering trading the D800 for the D750, due to the higher ISO performance and lighter form factor. Without flash, the D800 can be pushed to 3000 iso. Past that, it's grainy. Just my humble opinion, but for event photography in low light situations, the D750 is the way to go. Now, the D800 resolution does wonders with portraiture, aside from the green colour tinge. It's a tank, yes, but you should choose the best tool for what you're doing. Hope this helps somebody.

I considered that. What's holding me back is my style of shooting. I keep the 70-200 on one camera, and the 24-70 on the second camera. I've been so pleased with the 750 that i grab it first. i tend to rely on the higher ISO due to requiring higher shutter speeds. BTW, i really enjoy your videos. Keep at it!

Even though I own the D800, I must say that if I had the choice between a cheap D800, a normal D810 or a D750. I would go for the D810 every time. Whilst I like the D800, it does have a few issues, particularly with the AF system. The D810 fix's pretty much all the problems and is a great upgrade.

I shoot weddings and events. Have the d7100 and d750. Low light, which happens a lot and flash is excluded in many circumstances, I love the d750. The d7100, very good backup and with good glass, is an awesome value but high iso isn't the best. So, my next camera, is a d810 when the prices come down. Reason being, there isn't a perfect camera, but, for a given image, when lighting is reasonable, forgetting workflow, I've seen the results and they are superior. I want both so I have the choice and typically carry two cameras on my body when shooting.

I recently sold all of my camera gear (Fujifilm) and have decided I am done with photography. However, my wife wants to be able to get some pics of kids and such. So, I decided on a Nikon FF and something that's not too expensive since she is very novice. I didn't really set a budget though. I Would like to stay under 2k for camera and lenses. Why would I want to go ML I keep asking myself? Faster focus? Smaller, lighter and being near 70 years young? I do not care for the Z cameras from Nikon at this point. If I was to make a change ML I would probably go to a Sony system such as the a7iii.

I've been onboard DSLR since the D2 days but since model numbering is or feels likes it's gotten out of order. My old set was D2H, D200, D70s then D3S, D700, D300S and now on D4S but what's its 2nd tier pro enthusiast flagship of FX & DX or for the D5 little brothers now. I'm a gen behind for used price performance so barely getting a D5 & may want a D800 to go with. Well put. I've always got my primary for its low light speed in actions sports & events journalism but I want something a little compact version of its top tier but for in studio work & macro. I came from film so ISO 100-3200 w/ i-TTL flash & f1.4-2.8 is easy enough.

Call me a D750 fan, but the camera does hold its own for portraiture. Who the hell needs 36 megapixels for a portrait? Perhaps for fashion, when you want to put that portrait on the side of a building or on a giant billboard. But for normal use, no. You've heard the term "monster face?" Just try taking a portrait of a normal person at 36 megapixels. Ew! At 24.3 megapixels, the D750 is a great all-round performer and yes, it's low light performance is better than the D800 series. A pro photographer I know told me Nikon didn't get it right on the 800 series until the D810 and yes, he won't part with it. The D800 has an AA filter and two different recall issues. I don't know what issue he had with the D800e aside from the noisy shutter. Anyway, the D810 doesn't have to "dance on the skull" of the D750 because the D750 isn't dead. ;)

Few words on the D750, D800 and D810. D800 is yesterday's camera, AF on it was always problematic, the D750 is a considerable upgrade from the D800 AF system. D810 is an amazing camera but I disagree its a wedding camera, files too big, low light performance not as good as the D750 and the D750 will focus better at lower light (-3EV on D750 vs -2EV on D810).Of course the D810 will do weddings great but I think the D750 is a better wedding camera due to facts I said before and for less money. Where D810 shines is (as you said) Landscape and Portrait, the D750 is awesome at that too but the D810 better with its more resolution and better dynamic range.

+Theoria Apophasis Respectfully disagree on few points, yes the D810 sensor has few advantages over the D750 but as a guy who shot few weddings I can tell you as important as image quality is the differences between these 2 cameras is less then negligible for weddings, low light on the other hand in situations where you are not allowed to shoot with flash is where every little bit of better performance will be welcome. Again I am not disputing the D810 is better for landscape and portrait but I does think considering smaller flies, better lowlight (I agree not by much), better focusing and pretty significant price difference the D750 is a better tool for weddings and general use. The D750 is a general use camera and does a fantastic job at that. The D8100 on the other hand is directed more for studio and landscape and there it will have advantage. I do want to say though I disagree that the D810 is MUCH better then the D750 or the D750 is much better then the D810. Both these cameras are phenomenally good cameras, they will do everything very well, both have amazing AF system, loads of dynamic range and the list goes on and on and on so for some tasks the D810 is better and in other the D750 is the better tool.
