Nikon D800 Review: Full Frame Bargain?

Ғылым және технология

Nikon Amazon - amzn.to/3KO69wE (USA/Can/Europe)
Tokina lenses - amzn.to/3QNelB3
In this detailed video I discuss the Nikon D800. Showing the operation of the camera, real world use and thoughts, and some image quality tests and comparisons. I also cover areas to look at (Good and bad) and some of my own experiences with the camera.
The D800 is often overlooked at a truly affordable full frame camera on the used market, with rock bottom prices, a 36 megapixel sensor that is still very competitive, durable mag alloy body. Is the D800 the new D700? In many ways this is the camera to get, over the D700, as it offers a 100% viewfinder, dual memory slots, a better sensor for low light and dynamic range, in a lighter body.

    Excellent review BAZ! :) Agree fully on the 800, to me its one of Nikon's best and definitely a huge bargain these days. A nice alternative to the overpriced plastic "crap" being produced these days, a real photographers camera that they can grow into and thoroughly enjoy for a wide variety of photography types.

    That's a very low count by any standards! I appreciate your words, it did take quite some time to make, but I wanted to create a video that gave a more detailed look at the camera, v the usual desk chat stuff. A friend recommended it to me, I didn't take much notice for many months, but now I've got it I use it all the time and it's the main camera for me now (for stills photography), it's a great deal for what you get, very modest outlay. I'll keep an eye out for a super low shutter count to add to this one! You did well!

    Great video, thanks. I've just picked up an excellent D800 with 12,000 shots and original box for£489 on MPB UK. The others they have now are high shutter count, so it's best to be patient and wait for a better one to come up - set an alert. I don't think the price will fall much lower in the near future and I think sub £500 is a bargain for a pro full frame camera with these characteristics. Looking forward to comparing it to my D200 and D300 - which have got me back into DSLRs - and enjoying the increased resolution.

    It's worth looking around a bit, I see plenty of beaten up ones around (does seem to handle high use though should last I hope). Prices might drop a bit, I see many eBay sellers trying to get unrealistic prices for D800's, shop around from various places. I like the camera a lot, it's solid and well made (not the cheap feeling on some modern cameras), good output too. D810 prices are falling somewhat, this remains an unbeatable bargain across all the mounts for a pro spec FF body. I'll probably buy a few more! Let me know what you think of it, I get on great with it

    Yes there is something about the look of the images, and it's very capable still right up there with newer sensors. 36mp is more than I need most of the time, but you can downsize and the high ISO is very similar to 24mp ones (non BSI). I had a D7000, I had several honestly the D800 is a better camera in every way AF, sensor, build. But it's bigger and heavier (as you expect). D7K I found to be inconsistent for AF at times, I find the D800 much better (newer ones even more so but it's been good just get later production ones) You get almost the same resolution in crop mode on the D800, and you can get 6fps (if you have the AA's in the grip) good enough for most, I even find the 4fps isn't a problem. I have a question because I’ve been hearing a lot about auto focus issues. I’m currently looking at a model with a serial number with seven digits starting with the numbers 203. Is this an older model and could it have af issues? I’ve been using a Nikon d5200 for 9 years and although I love the thing, I’ve always dealt with autofocus issues, so I don’t want to take my upgrade lightly.

  • @MrBazReviews

    @MrBazReviews

    4 ай бұрын

    First digit is region code, we're not interested in that because it's not useful. The other ones are the production numbers in this case it's 47503, I have no problems with the AF and I've used the camera extensively, so try to get a serial at that point or later and you should be fine. For AF issues nothing beats the disaster the D7000 was, I had 3 bodies all were so far off it was almost funny. Look at the serial on the right hand side ignore the first digit

    Thinking of picking this up for work events. We have many facilities throughout the country and often we’ll visit and take images of the facility and our people for our culture images. Last i shot I rented a Canon 6D mark ii that i thought about picking up but this is looking like not a bad photo camera. Currently not interested in the video aspect as we typically outsource that to a production company so that’s not really an issue.

    Pretty good, thorough review. I've been using my D800 for about 3 years now, bought it used. Putting some terrific Tamron SP lenses on the front, I've been shooting primarily product for commercial projects. It's been very good. If and when I upgrade, I'll keep using this body and add a D850 for greater dynamic range and file sizes. I've no interest in going into mirrorless. I just don't see the need.

  • @MrBazReviews

    @MrBazReviews

    7 ай бұрын

    Is there much point though? I toyed with the D850 idea, but truth is Nikon should have updated the camera with USB-C and the off sensor phase detect AF. It does have some nice features, but image wise little in it v the D800 or D810 cameras, the small pixel increase isn't very much either. Dynamic range and low light all 3 are close. Unless there is a specific need (more AF points, faster fps/buffer), maybe it's not a great deal these days? I do like the idea of shooting smaller file sizes though (Raw)

  • @MrBazReviews

    @MrBazReviews

    Early ones did (or some did not sure if all early ones had an issue). It's hard to know when it got fixed but this one is just under 50,000 serial number, and it's fine. I have no idea of it's history though. Serials start with the region (in Europe it is 6) Later ones would be say 610553 look for the 1 on the second digit or got for a similar one to this or higher ie 45,000-50,000 or around that. Very early ones will show much lower numbers

  • @BorealASMR
    @BorealASMR7 ай бұрын

    Picked one up as a backup to my D850, quite like it. Doesn't have the base ISO of 64 or the flat profile but neutral works well enough. Low light performance is definitely acceptable, which is a must when northern lights are a huge part of your photography. The resolution is still respectable, though slightly hindered by the AA filter which is admittedly quite light. It is fairly new to me but so far has been a solid backup/second body, you can still make quite large prints with 36.3mp. I generally shoot tripod mounted with the mirror locked and a delay but have found it sufficiently sharp with fast shutter speeds handheld and I have tremors from some meds I'm on so it shouldn't be a problem for most people. The grip isn't as comfortable as the newer bodies but it's also not uncomfortable. Overall my biggest complaint is the ISO button, just program a button for that purpose.

  • @MrBazReviews

    @MrBazReviews

    7 ай бұрын

    Yes there are some weak points, the grip could be a bit deeper. I find it "OK", to hold but newer models are better here. I set the video button to ISO, this works for me, but of course it took Nikon a while to figure out it should be near the shutter release (who knows why it took so long)! For the money it's hard to argue with, I have also noted the low light AF is remarkable in how low it will go. It beats out my D780 in low light (I might do a video on this), it can lock in very low light for some reason. AF performance is good enough IMO, even for action shots. Though the frame rate/buffer are modest. 36 to 45mp isn't much, really it's only a small difference - so for those looking for decent resolution it's more than acceptable here. Regarding the image quality, there is really very small difference in this between the D8xx series bodies (if you take into account actual exposure/ISO levels etc). Low light I find the 24.5mp BSI sensor to beat them out even downsized to match, it's notable but perhaps not massive difference. Interesting to hear your thoughts on this, have you used the D810 at all?

  • @BorealASMR

    @BorealASMR

    7 ай бұрын

    @MrBazReviews You're absolutely right about the 24mp sensors in low light, I however have a bit of an addiction to large prints. Unfortunately, I haven't used the D810, though I would absolutely love to get my hands on one. Unfortunately, people here seem to think they're still worth $1,500-2,000. I was impressed by the low light AF, though typically I'm manually focusing most of the time for northern lights to get the best balance of a sharp subject and sharp stars, but the AF is fast enough for any landscape photography and definitely some sports and wildlife as is the frame rate. The D780 is a nice body, though the lack of a vertical grip was a bit of a drawback for me as the second battery makes a difference in the cold especially when shooting time-lapses and the extra weight helps steady my hands a bit. That said, I do like the D780.

  • @weebolddavy

    I've got a couple of Nikon D7000 bodies. I was thinking of trading one in against a D800, the main reason being that I'm not making the most of my tokina 11-16mm lens because the D7000s DX sensor is causing vignetting at the wider angles. I assume that the D800 will cure that problem? Keeping the other D7000 will allow me to expand the high end of my 70-300mm zoom to 450mm so it will be a win/win situation.

  • @MrBazReviews

    @MrBazReviews

    8 ай бұрын

    The Tokina is an APS-C lens, the vignette is normal. You can use it on a D800 in crop mode true, but the lens will perform the same. Stop it down to reduce the darkening. The D800 is light years ahead of the D7000 in AF and image quality

    i am actually thinking about if this might actually a better purchase right now than a mirrorless. if you re in the market for a around 400 Euro used camera body, your mirrorless options are extremely limited. you have something like lets say a sony a7ii. but its just worse than a d800 in about every aspect there is. then you have stuff like couple fujis but that stuff isnt better than a d800... and lenses and such cost more too. its quite a weird one. i love focus peaking. thats about it. you re kind of paying a lot of money to ... at times get similar or even worse image quality. i m just not sure if its even worth it to be honest, based how absolutely dirty cheap you can get dslr stuff at the moment

    The A7II is dated and maybe OK for using with adapted lenses as a lower cost option, but I'd skip it. A7III costs more quite a bit over 1000 usually for a good one. I have a Nikon Z6 here and I am going to do a review on that, it's a bit more affordable as far as mirrorless goes. I have to be completely honest, I'd rather shoot with the D800 over the mirrorless cameras I have used, some are very good, but the fun factor is less for some reason. Ergonomics not as good, less controls. The mirrorless systems would be very expensive to buy into, there are a lot of F mount deals right now bodies and lenses. Whilst I play with mirrorless too, the D800 is going nowhere it's a superb camera even to this day.

    I think it comes down to, can you get the job done and "good enough". For a lot of people the D800 falls into that. Unless you're doing video or need a high fps, or value smaller/lighter which can come with some compromises (controls/handling). Why throw money at something which might give similar results? Still a lot of camera and prices are very low these days.

    The D800, is a Good Camera, with one Caveat, the Camera Body does have a Weak Spot and often broke. I had one for a little over 2 yrs, took a lot of Great Pics with it, some of which were Published in Magazines

    What broke? I covered the "cracked frame" problem, which so far hasn't been a problem for me. I do use it on a tripod sometimes too - it might be a problem for impact damage, but having used the camera for over a year it's still delivering for me. The early ones has the left AF alignment problem, this can be avoided by buying later serial models.

    @@pjimmbojimmbo1990 How do you feel about the D810 v the D800? I'm surprised the D800 outperforms other models for low light AF, it hammers the D750 and D780 can focus in scary low light without AF assist, of course there are other advantages to the D810 I can see, would be interested to hear your thoughts on that

    Ive had mine for about 6 or so years. Autofocus is garbage - the modes are rubbish, considering even the largest point system is still confined to a very central area, and you can't focus/recompose with this thing. So if you shoot stuff that moves, forget about relying on the D800 to lock focus. I have mine set to back focus button and only release shutter when focussed, but its still really annoying getting stuff pinned down. Instead, just set a focus trap, whack it on F6 or so, high SS, and shoot (and hope!)! Also, the viewfinder is crap. As good as useless in anything even approaching low light. And the live view in low light is also hopeless. So yeah, if you like to shoot in low light this camera will really piss you off. All that being said....if you are a slow and methodical shooter, with a tripod, who can take time to compose and focus, and wait for light/use longer shutter speeds...then the image quality you can get from these is absolutely stunning. It's one of those rare cameras that really has some special sauce, that hard to define quality. I use mine with very old F lenses too, manual focus, and its an absolute joy seeing images appear that are very reminiscent of images I get from my Nikon F3. Bags of character. Prints from it are stunning, and can be ginormous. All in all, its a fab camera. Not exactly something I particularly enjoy lugging around with my 180 prime stuck on it, but it's at least reassuringly rugged.

    I honestly don't find the camera bad. It can lock AF in lower light than the D780 I have (quite a bit), it's done quite well at tracking AF (most shots are in focus for me, but of course newer bodies are better). I know some people got hit with AF issues and alignment problems. I like the images better than the D780 too (but that camera is no question superior for low light/high ISO) Dated as it might be, I like the camera and the images it kicks out, it does 90% of what I need, for video I use the D780 and if I need more fps/buffer. Solid build and I like using the camera, perhaps more than the newer models out there. I don't find Nikon's Z range that exciting, so if the news of end of production of Nikon F Mount gear is true, I'll just buy another one of these if I stick with F mount. In 10 years time it will still be good enough, that's the joy of bargain gear ;-)

    @@MrBazReviews Yeah I always enjoy using mine too - although I do get those sporadic error messages locking it up more often these days so Im hoping its just a card issue, or perhaps a lens contact issue. I was tempted to get another body in case this one packs up, but in all honesty I think I'll go back to Fuji, get a GFX model and call it a day on "final camera" systems. The images from the D800 are beautiful but the viewfinder really drives me nuts at times, its almost like there's a sepia-esque film or something on the mirror or the lens thats making the viewfinder so dark and it really bugs me. It's fine obviously outside during the day, but I also love to shoot in low light (indoors also) and it really hampers the whole experience of shooting when you can hardly see what's going on through the lens. Fuji are great in that respect - my X100f had an optical and electronic viewfinder, so as soon as it got dark, flick on the electronic and you're back in business. Worked brilliantly, and going back to a DSLR - whilst nostalgic and familiar, really feels like going back to the dark ages (literally) sometimes. I've always been more of a manual focus person so the focussing "issues" of the D800 aren't a major concern for me - and it was never designed as a spray n pray camera, BUT I think it's certainly worth pointing out to people considering it in 2024, that they will be pretty disappointed if they're expecting modern smart phone levels of auto focus. What you need with the D800 is VERY solid technique. To get good focus, breathing and holding is as critically important as shutter speed (and obviously lens selection) using this camera. It's really not for the faint hearted - that big sensor is sensitive! and you need to concentrate using it. There's nothing at all wrong with any camera that teaches you (forces you!) to become a better photographer. I think of mine a bit like a classic car. It's heavy to steer, a bit temperamental, not especially fast, but it makes your heart sing. When all elements come together, it's a joy. I'm not even remotely interested in anything else Nikon makes anymore, and the only other camera I'd consider rather than the D800 would be a D850 - and I'd only consider that because of the extra pixels and ability to print even larger. But tbh, the D800 can bash out whopping great prints, so you really do end up at the point of diminished returns eventually. For the cash the D800 goes for these days, it's a no brainer.

    @@obscurazone Sounds like something is wrong with that camera. I don't find the overall performance a problem with this one, 4fps isn't fast but it's fast enough for many tasks. There are valid reasons to consider the D810 or D850 maybe, but reality is looking at the D850 yes it does video (but the D780 is the only real choice for that IMO), and it has some useful features too, but then again the 9 megapixel increase is near invisible - it's just tiny and won't make any obvious real world difference. I was at one time thinking about the D850, then again the D800 does most of what I want so why throw money at a more expensive body? That was my thinking. Yes the S/M raw would be useful, the better video useful and the silent shutter. For me anyway I find the D800 pretty much unbeatable for the price The D800 I got needed a mirror clean (for whatever reason I suspect it wasn't used much low count), so I did that carefully and that improved the brightness. Yes newer bodies have brighter viewfinders, I find it good enough.

  • @obscurazone

    @@MrBazReviews There's nothing wrong with it per se. Works exactly as expected. The error messages are often 12 or 13 (I forget) which is buffer related - I hardly ever shoot continuously, but there appears to be a glitch when I do. No big deal. I got mine with hardly any clicks at all, around 900, so it was in mint condition - the mirror was spotless. What I might do is take it to a Nikon dealer and see if they have another in stock, just to compare the viewfinder using my lenses. At the end of the day though, I don't expect there's anything wrong with the viewfinder. Its just how Nikon has made it and personal preferences. I also shoot with range finders, so the difference between the two systems is ginormous. Looking through a range finder is basically like wearing glasses. Hardly any difference between your eye and the viewfinder scence. A DSLR is like wearing shades by comparison. Way darker. Is what it is. Not many cameras beat the D800 for image quality though, even in 2024. So if you're a purposeful photographer, who puts a bit more thought and time into how you shoot, you'll not be disappointed with it.

    I can only speak for myself, but I've mostly lost all interest in APS-C cameras, other than playing around or making video content. For many once you go full frame, and at this affordable price - there isn't a lot of sense paying much for a crop body. IMO of course.

    I wouldn't worry about it, even if repairs were possible the cost would be not far off another body anyway (unless it was something simple). If mine broke I would sell it for parts, and just buy another one! At this price repairs are not usually economical, and there are likely to be plenty of bodies around for a long time. Curious to see how far the prices will drop on this one, but clearly IMO it's by far the best deal for a DSLR out there, for what it offers.

    Whilst I'm not into the pixel race, I really don't find the image quality an issue here at all. The AA filter is very light at that, even the normal D800. Fuji have some interesting ideas no question, and you could certainly say the weight saving is notable with the bodies and lenses. But there isn't a Fuji out there that can match or come close to the D800 images, with DR, or high ISO. It's also interesting I can buy a D800 for less then an X-T1 - I know which I would buy.
