Today we’re going to be looking at the newly announced Nikon D780. This is a full frame DSLR that will be replacing the D750, which came out in 2014. We’ll see that the D780 takes a number of features from Nikon’s Z6 mirrorless camera and fits them into a DSLR body. We’ll take a look at everything new in the D780, as well as make some comparisons with the D750 and Z6. Check the video description below if you’d like to jump to a specific section, and if you find this video helpful please be sure to like and subscribe.
The D780 sports a solid design with good ergonomics that fits well in the hand with a comfortable grip. It’s a weather sealed camera with a magnesium alloy body. There’s the familiar array of buttons and dials across the body, with only one or two minor tweaks from the D750. It features a 2.4 million dot tilting LCD screen, which, unlike the D750, is now a touchscreen. Another difference is that the built-in flash from the D750 has been removed. The D780 also features dual UHS-II SD card slots. Battery life is a particular strength here as well. The D780 lasts for 2260 shots - that’s 1000 shots more than the D750 and 6 times more than the Z6. That all-day shooting capability could definitely be an important feature for some, and the battery can also be charged via a USB-C port
The D780 features a similar 24 MP full frame sensor to the D750, and the picture quality remains high. The processor is now the EXPEED 6 processor from the Z mirrorless cameras. This offers some improvements to high ISO performance and range over the D750. Shutter speed range is also expanded, with a max of 1/8000th of a second and minimum of 15 minutes - in comparison the D750 range which was a max 1/4000th and a minimum of just 30 seconds. Overall though you won’t see significant differences in image quality compared to the D750 - although that’s not a negative point, as both the D750 and D780 provide very high quality imagery
The D780 also features a 51-point AF system when you’re shooting through the viewfinder, like the D750. However, Nikon has said that they’ve added algorithms from the D5 in there which improve the responsiveness of this system. The real differences happen though once we change over to live view, where the D780 switches over to the 273-point on-chip phase detect AF system from the Z6. This means that in live view AF on the D780 is very fast and responsive and does a very good job of tracking subjects - and this carries over to video shooting as well. It also has impressive eye detection and tracking capabilities. Burst shooting speed is 7 fps with the mechanical shutter, half a frame faster than the D750, but if you switch to live view you can jump up to 12 fps with 12-bit RAWs via the electronic shutter. So overall you’ll see good performance from the D780 through-the-viewfinder, but you’ll get a step up once you jump to live view, both in autofocus performance and burst shooting speeds
Video is a major area on improvement on the D780, and this is hands-down the best Nikon DSLR for video shooters. It essentially has the same video capabilities as the Z6. This means UHD 4K with full pixel readout and no crop at up to 30 fps. It can also shoot 1080 at up to 120 fps. In addition, you can output 10-bit video via HDMI using either N-log - for colour grading - or HLG for HDR. The camera has a range of important video features like mic and headphone jacks, focus peaking, zebra stripes, timecode, quick punch in, and more.
So overall the D780’s goal is to take some of Nikon’s advances in mirrorless tech and package that into a DSLR that is otherwise reminiscent of the popular and long-standing D750. And in that goal it definitely succeeds. I think the D780 is a solid, dependable option for an enthusiast or pro who wants an upgrade but isn’t ready to jump over to mirrorless yet - and especially if they have an interest in video. And there are definite reasons why someone might prefer the D780 over a mirrorless camera like the Z6, such as a preference for DSLR handling, optical viewfinder, the longer battery life, dual card slots, or the desire to use Nikon’s large DSLR lens lineup without needing adaptors. I think we’ll see this develop into a popular camera, and a worthy successor to the D750

    6:00 Husband giving 'how to make a good photo' directions. Be careful dude!...she already looks annoyed. ;-) Anyway, other than the removal of the flash (and possibly lack of battery grip), I think this is a nearly perfect Nikon enthusiast DSLR. A little bit best of both worlds. Great live view AF and great use as a traditional DSLR too.

    I don’t care about mirrorless Nikon for the moment. All my top notch lenses are Nikon F mount and just got a D500 for 850 with 3 lenses included. My wife shoots with the lighter D7500 which is very good too. For 35mm FX I will soon upgrade from my D610 to D780. It seems to be a superb camera and has a full silent mode for events in live view, this is not the case of the amazing D850 and I really don’t need 45mp

    Hey man, as a D750 shooter i doubt i would upgrade to a D780. What is that jitter on 5:50 to 5:58? And the static video just before the timelapse.... Maybe if someone is upgrading from a different camera but not from a D750. But good honest review. 📸👌

  • @isoProxanol

    @isoProxanol

    That jittering move is due to the wrong framerate that was used to record/upload the video. It often occurs if you use 24 fps because the time for each single frame can't be properly aligned with the refresh rate of your monitor which is normally at 60Hz. So this shouldn't be a camera problem itself, just false usage.

    0:47 "Don't fix what's not broken" - should we bring up the Live View button that's [IMO for the worse] moved to a more accessible place so you can more easily accidentally press it? That's not a mirrorless to be able to switch the feed between the display and the OVF instantly, so it might cause you to lose frames if you're not used to it. Same thing with the non-unlockable mode dial that has beginner-friendly modes in the middle of the useful ones - this might be a pet peeve of mine, but still - I shot for years with a D7000 and never had an accidental mode change (so it makes no sense to have it permanently locked), and it was very convenient to go between M and U1/U2 as a makeshift shooting banks (which now has "Effects" chucked in there).

    You'll always have the snappy af sound with the built-in mic. Af seems to be much better than Z6's, which loses many times its face recognition function. When the girl is in front of the camera only can we see a little slow af function. I think d780's af system is the best for video until this day.

    It is the camera I was waiting for and I would have grabbed it the day it was available in the market. Definitely it is a marriage of both worlds of DSLR and convenience of the Mirrorless camera. Yes it is the best in its segment. But the problem is everybody is not vlogger but a photographer. It could have easily expanded its market even more had Nikon made the D780 vertical grip compatibe. They lose the market for those photographer who wanted to upgrade to full frame dslr and not migrate to mirrorless but could not jump to D800/810 or 850.Nikon failed its photographer who had been loyal to it, maybe it got carried away by the current trend of youtubers requirements and forgot those who had been loyal for many decades.

    Thank you so much for the video. I’m planning to purchase my very first DSLR which is Nikon D750 along with 85mm 1.8 + 50mm 1.8 G lens. I’m wondering is it still worth to buy this camera considering 5 years old?. The concern I have is from D750 is - 1. Slower AF, 2. Shutter speed 1/4000 which is half the D780/Z6ii/Z5 1/8000. Are these show stopper for D750?. Purpose of buying a camera is for taking Portraits, Still, Landscape, Bird, Product photography (learning) and of course my kids. It would be really great if you throw some lights on my concern to make a wise decision.... other options I have considered is Nikon D780 with one of the lens and Z6ii with the kit lens... apart from D780 and Z6ii I have been suggesting to go with D850 with the kit lens. Thank you and looking forward to your suggestion.

    Keep in mind the Z lenses can be up to 10X more cost than good used F mounts lenses. Using an adapter in the mix using a Z body makes it hard to change out lenses also. Also low cost screw drive lenses, that work well, will not focus with a Z body.

    @@satyayaya6716 I'd consider the D750 unless you really need the extra features. It all depends on how much money you have to spend if you want to buy more than one lens and how you are using them.. Nobody seems to mention this since the cost of the body is not a big factor in the overall spending. I have about 10 lenses, many D series screw drives. They still make some of them new and tons are used online in EC. Most are pretty sharp with good contrast.

  • @jacobl6572

    @jacobl6572

    The prices of these can be 1/10 the cost of a Z lens. They are simpler with no motor or VR to go bad in them. The D series 28-105mm f3.5 -f4.5 macro is going for $100 or less in great condition but the f4 24 -70mm Z lens is going for $1000! It is not much sharper if it is at all from the tests I have studied. The Z bodies do not allow any screw drive lenses to auto focus. Using the adapter with f mounts also means you will have 2 lenses + the adapter and the camera body to hold while changing from F to Z mount lenses and back again. Try that during a wedding. So it really matters on several factors, for me I am saving over $10,000 in lenses staying with all f mounts and no adapter to deal with than going all Z.

    Pretty sure you won't see any noticeable image quality over the D750. But I would go for the D780, being newer tech. Lack of flash is a bit of a bummer for me. But Nikon always do this, just miss out on making a really great camera. Of course it's all about money, trying to get people to pay over the odds, just to get all the features they want. I'm going to stick with my D750, and D7500 till they break!

    @S Tra I go by actual performance and not specs. So till it comes out for the public, it's somewhat pointless to go back and forth about specs. For example, the D5 has excellent specs, yet it wasn't that great of a performer for the price based on my experience shooting with the camera. I am not saying D780 will not be a good camera. What I am saying it doesn't offer anything significant enough for me to pay 3k. If the D780 does borrow the AF from the D5, the video AF is not going to be consistent, and the 120fps isn't something I use often enough to even bother with. So if I do need an extra camera, the D850, which I can find for $1800 minty used, is a better option for me personally.

You will be able to use your F-mount lenses and the new Z-mount lenses. When the lenses with 1.2 aperture come out, you will only be able to use them on the Z6, Z7 or other Nikon mirrorless. I've moved from my 12-year old D60 so D750 is like a whole different universe :) I'm glad that you are happy with it too! I think that it is a sensible compromise between the latest technology and the price point. You are not getting all of the goodies that come with mirrorless cameras (IBIS, focus peaking, EVF etc.) but you do get a top-notch image quality, great handling and wide choice of lenses with D750. MC Hammer good deal on the serial number. I think that means they replaced the shutter before they were sold so you should be good. I agree with the 3D look too. Don’t get me wrong the Mirrorless does take amazing photos but yes they do make images a bit “flat.” Yes, Mirrorless does have its advantages. I will say focus peaking is great. I also like the no delay in the DSLR view finder though. Ibis can be obtained with Vr lenses for the DSLR so for Mirrorless it’s only a perk if you want the newest glass. Now the Z6 I keep hearing is better than the D750. I haven’t had one to confirm that but we’re also talking double the price. D750 will be around for a long tome like the D700. 👍🏻

    I have the 750 and 850. The 850 is an absolute beast (the 750 was too when it was released, but it's starting to show its age a bit). That said, the 850 may not the best fit for your needs. It's a fair bit larger in size, weight, and of course cost. While the 850 raw files are great to work with, they are more than twice the size as well. I added another drive in my computer so I can continue being lazy regarding culling images. If you have the cash to splash and the things I mentioned are not a concern, the 850 is definitely a workhorse. Honestly though, I personally don't need 46mp images. I do a lot of night time milky-way photos, and I think the low light performance of the 780 is likely better than the 850. Starting over today, I'd choose the 780 because of what I like to shoot.

    At 5:37 video loose its focus. I doubt the auto focus is good ... It is even bad that it does not have in body image stabilization. This is a shame .. just slightly better than D750. Cost is almost double of what D750 is available right now. Feeling really bad.

    It is a shame that the autofocus system on the Nikon Z6 is just not really good enough. I had hoped that they would be able to improve it through firmware upgrades by now. Sadly they have not been able to improve it enough for me. So I was interested in this D780. But if the video is not stable enough, then I will have to pass on this camera as well.

    exactly.. why would someone get this camera over a sony a7iii? You get all this on the sony and also IBIS. Nikon is just soooo slow on implementing features other cam manufacturers implemented years ago.

    @@quickpickle have you ever tried a Nikon? I'm a Nikon shooter and tried the A73/A7r3 and I was disappointed by the files: they looked too digital like from a crappy entry level Nikon aps-c. No jokes. The colors were weird. I guess you need tons of post production for sony files. With my d750 the jpegs were ready to go. The A73 features also a bad evf and display.

    Battery life is rated better because there is no flash. CIPA requires to take every other shot with flash if there is a build-in flash. The D780 none, this "improves" battery life.
