I'm awfully glad that you do like it. Really. It's gratifying to know that someone is getting full and total enjoyment from his/her camera (even those who still hold on to their old film cameras), just as I am still enjoying my two trusty D610 beauties with my old collection of expensive, fast AF lenses I used during the film era, each and every single one of them. I particularly like the FF memory that receives more light, hence more details to capture and store.

It's not quite accurate, I own a large vintage and manual collection and enjoy shooting that way, always keep my cameras on M setting only and mirrorless has been a game changer for me, no DSLR ever made can replace shooting experience and keeper rate. Focus peeking and magnifying gave a whole new life to vintage lens world.

@@jimmason8502 You hit on something there, my friend. Today, camera manufacturers are catering to "must have" crowd that spend their money to store the purchase within a few days, like a child with a new toy. Insane! I bought two Nikon D610 bodies... I carry both with different lenses attached (I've been doing this since 1965); I miss very, very few shots since it's easier and faster to switch cameras than lenses. I can afford to buy the latest photography toy ...but I refuse to make those humongously wealthy manufacturers richer at my expense. Today's cameras are overloaded with options and features to attract the gadget/gear junkies... most of which they'll'll never use. A salesman told me, "Why with this (another) model you can freeze a bullet!" and I asked, "Why or when will I ever need to freeze a bullet?" As I told the salesman, "I'm satisfied with the 610 capacity to accept my 7 expensive and fast AF lenses; I shoot on A Priority, S Priority and Full Manual but I rely on AF due to my failing vision." Most young or newbie photographers want an expensive camera loaded with features and options... for bragging rights. No, thank you; I'll stuff my money in the bank.

Maybe i fall under the category: Low Tech. Because i still use my Nikon D3000, Nikon D90 and last month I bought Nikon D610. I invested few F mount legacy lenses AF-D and few AF-S VR lenses as well. Technology has a big positive factor to us as well because of the improvements that camera manufacturers integrated to the system every year or every 6 months or every few years or so.. As long as camera manufacturers will still continue in producing dslr's despite of increasing demand for mirrorless, I will still use dslr due to massive variety of legacy lenses that I can use.. From the 1st party lenses up to 3rd party lens manufacturers.

Only if it enables you to do things that are required of your shooting style... if it meets a NEED. But, I wonder, how many of today's gear junkies can make a living with totally manual cameras that only had automatic light metering as we did back in 1965. You know, some of our modern age cameras have more computing power than the first astronauts had when they first landed on the moon... and our modern cameras are loaded with features we'll never need nor ever use. What's the sense in that? Well, that's how camera manufacturers lure the gullible gear junkies... and they're hauling in money by the hundreds of barrels, too.

There are still a lot of people who want the lesser megapixels (don't need it for weddings) but prefer an optical viewfinder. It seems like you get the best of both worlds with this. It was time for a new camera and, with increasing age, a smaller and lighter camera was necessary. I looked at the Nikon Z series but the Sony A7R3 seemed to offer better eye focus and I bought one. I had used cameras in the past that had EVF and they were awful. The A7R3 just does not seem like an EVF, it seems natural. But I'm hanging on to my Nikons. I still love them.

I've found that I have to shoot about 2/3 stop over to get proper exposure with my film cameras and the D780 appears to be the same way. The biggest thing I've noticed is how much heavier the D780 is compared to my film camera. I used lithium batteries in my film cameras and they're so much lighter than the battery pack in the D780.

Great video! Sums up the D780 nicely I think. It does seem very much like a digital equivalent of the F6. I shoot a D750 and love it. I also have a decent collection of old Nikkor glass and I enjoy shooting wide open and up close using zoomed in live-view to really nail focus; my favorite lens is an old 55mm f/1.2 that I had to convert to AI. When I started reading the specs of the D780 I was really excited; just like you, I realized that this was going to be the ultimate DSLR for a vintage lens junkie like me! I also do a lot of photography in low light with fire performers, so I was excited about the improved dynamic range over the D780. But...then I got to the point in the specs where they dropped the vertical grip, and that killed the D780 for me. One of my few reliable paying gigs is regatta photography and for that task the vertical grip is kind of a big deal; I can't worry about craning my arm for a vertical shot while I'm trying to keep my balance on a tiny chase boat. Plus...I'm really not a fan of losing features in order to upgrade, especially at such a high price point. I may buy a D780 someday for personal use with my vintage collection after the price has come down *considerably*, but for my paying work it's a no-go for me. (Of course...Ideally I'd buy a Z6 instead after someone releases a fully functional F2Z adapter...but that maybe a pipe dream....)

I have some OLLLLD Nikkor lenses and I have more modern lenses as well. I was also considering the D500 because it's basically a D5 mini. One thing I am not crazy about is auto focus percentage as it pertains to field of view. Mirrorless is close to if not 100%, FF sems to be about 60% whilst crop sensors are around 75-80%. Your thoughts?

Video is excellent, especially with my off camera TASCAM TM-2X microphone. Used it for a huge gala live concert and the photos were magic. Battery is time is unbelievable. Thank you for your thoughts. Looks like this is a good camera. Nikon will be selling quite a few of these I am sure; DSLRs are alive and well and will be for many years to come as long as people buy them. It also seems to me that FF is taking much longer to replace higher end APSc offerings that the manufacturers anticipated. I am one of those people that bought into the Z system, I am very happy with the camera and the 24 - 70 f4 kit lens, but will bide my time before I expand my lens collection as they are quite expensive and I want to avoid any "costly" mistakes if you pardon the pun. Stay safe

This is awesome news for me, I do not like mirrorless Nikon Cameras im DSLR all the way so to have a FULL frame Nikon with more modern features that will let me use all my lenses and lets not forget the 2 SD memory card slot ( I personally love this feature ) I say hell yes!! Looks like the Nikon D780 will be my next camera. Im also glad that Nikon is still coming out with new Dslr cameras and I hope that they continue to do so for years to come because When I was a child I started with your simple Nikon point and shoot camera then my fitst serious camera was the Nikon 1 J1 MIRRORLESS camera and at that time I thought it was a good camera it did the job BUT when I got my first Dslr which was considered a low end Nikon Dslr ( D3400 ) boy let me tell you Ive never looked back and couldnt believe I hadnt bought a Dslr sooner. You get it!!!! You understand me!!!! I have an old 50mm F1.2 that I can now shoot quickly and acurately and I'm having a ball and the minimal purple fringing wide open is gone in Lightroom with a click. My 105 F2 DC focuses on this camera (not on mirrorless). My 35-70mm 2.8D that I have used for many weddings and by some miracle get sharp photos without IBIS (I don''t know how I do this). Yes, I have a large collection of older AIS manual focus lenses with character (not clinical sharpness). I'll be honest, I don't care about the advantages of the closer flange distance for print up to 20x30. No one can zoom my prints to 100 times the size without smashing their nose on the print. Unlike the d750 (which I still own) this acquires focus very quickly and is very useful. You didn't mention the 5d focus algorithm that allows faster focus than the 750. Love this camera.

I wanted a DSLR as I thought it the only way to balance out the large, wonderful, 70-200mm 2.8 lens. Now that I'm more acquainted with the F-mount lens lineup, I'm glad to also see lightweight alternatives like the 300mm f/4 PF and the 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, both of which have about the same depth of field at max aperture, available. Naturally, Tamron comes out with a super compact 70-180 f/2.8 just after I've written off the a7 system as an option though... but I'm still having too much fun with my D610 to care. If GAS strikes again, the D780 is there to cure me. Thanks for the review!

Good job explaining where the D780 fits in today's world. It combines the best of Nikon DSLRs with the best of Nikon Z cameras, having both D850 features and Z6 features. It's the first Nikon DSLR that one can use to do accurate and fast autofocus in Live View mode. It's backside illuminated (BSI) sensor ups the image quality and noise control over the venerable D750. It has the incredible still-image and video features of the Z6, with its 273 edge-to-edge focus points in Live View. And....wait for it...it doesn't overheat when shooting 4K UHD 4.2.2 H.264 8- or 10-bit video with N-log or HDR (HLG) to an external recorder (e.g., Atomos), or with internal video to the memory cards. It's the best Nikon DSLR for shooting video, with its full-frame, oversampled 4K readout (no line skipping or pixel binning). The D780 is truly the best of both worlds in one camera body. A hybrid camera with advanced features. If the D750 and D850 are cult classics, the D780 deserves to be right up there with them. Did I mention that the battery lasts forever?

There is a rumor that Nikon has a patent that would allow a screen to pop in through a DSLR viewfinder effectively giving you a EVF. It was thought they may have released it with the D6 but that was not the case. I hope they still release at least one more generation of DSLRs as the best reason to go with Nikon has always been their large collection of usable glass.

I experienced my first mirrorless cameras in a shop yesterday. A Z6 and an X-T4. The dynamic range of the EVF was horrible, compared with the human eye, but certainly very good for an electronic finder and certainly more than useable - I could appreciate the advantages over an OVF. For my large hands, the Z6 felt too small coming from a D7000 and not that nice to hold; albeit better than the Fuji. Then the assistant handed me a D780. Wow, the ergonomics... fitted like a glove. But no IBIS or Z mount advantages though with the D780. Hopefully the D780 price comes down.

I love my D750. Perfect for my needs. But it's aging. The shutter is well over 260,000 actuations. It could last for another 100,000 or it could fail tomorrow. Nikon repair centers are closed, and even when they reopen, it will take months and many hundreds of dollars to replace the shutter. I need a new main camera. I can afford a D780, and I love its features, especially battery life and two card slots. I cannot afford to buy new lenses. I have to stick with F-mount until I win the lottery. The D780 is perfect for me. And I'm not a lens junkie, just wedded to F-mount. And I bet a lot of old-but- excellent F-mount lenses will come onto the market as people dump them for mirrorless. I might move to mirrorless when some lens maker creates an affordable tilt-shift lens for mirrorless, which is the lens that I use every day for my work in real estate. I bet I'll be waiting a long time for that.

I have owned a dozen DSLR cameras as well as hundreds of film cameras. I switched to mirrorless like most people did. I started way back with a canon m. Then I went Sony A7II and A7iii. I finally ended up with the Canon R5. I came to dislike too many aspects of mirrorless. The evf while great for seeing the final image (something I don’t feel I need) it is horrible on a Sunday day imo. I also dislike that the evf is always sleeping or draining the battery like mad!! I longed for the ovf of a dslr to match my experiences with my film cameras. What kept me away from going back to the dslr was the lack of phase detect af in live view which is great for street photography and eye af for easy face grabs. I am finally fed up enough that I sold my mirrorless cameras and lenses. My search brought me to the d780. I just rented one and hope it is finally a modernish camera to suit my needs. Thanks for the review. Even if a couple years ago. Still very helpful in my decision making process :) 🍻

So, Sony A7 III, Nikon D780 and Nikon Z6 are my finaly options to choose from. One reason why I would go for the D780 is the used lens market ... I can get this lens and a 24-70 2.8 for the same price as one mirrorless lens! So, question remains ... do I or shall I invest into an old, potentially running out system!? The Grand Canyon shotd at 05:20 are a great example of why DSLRs are having trouble against modern cellphone cameras that us "computational photography" like the Google Pixel 6a. Those pictures look like schma. Dark, dreary, overcast schma. You need a 64" monitor to even begin to make those look appealing. A 6a in HDR+ mode would take phenomenal shots of those scenes even under cloudy conditions. With an "accurate" DSLR you need light. From somewhere. Either in the scene or in post. No light, you get schma. With light the canyon area would colorize nicely but then the sky would be bright and hazy. You then ned a haze filter to get the sky clear. The canyon is simply not lit well here so it all becomes "shadow" and the 6a would fix that in the camera in HDR+ mode while preserving most of the cloud layer and it would look awesome.
