Nikon D780 hands on first look - DSLR of the future?

Ғылым және технология

DSLR, Mirrorless, Mirrorless, DSLR? Kirk gets early access to the Nikon D780 which aims to marry the best of DSLR design with the features of a mirrorless camera. Updating the massively popular D750, the latest entry to the full-frame range packs a 24.5MP BSI sensor, huge ISO range and 12fps continuous shooting speed, the D780 brings you the DSLR design you love, but backs it up with expanded features using the rear screen with Live View.
Nikon's D780 has set itself the task of being a true hybrid, with the kind of video feature you'd expect in Nikon's Z range of mirrorless cameras such as zebra stripes, 4K 30 and 10-bit output. There's also a range of handy stills features, such as a 51-point PDAF system, or back-end 273 point using the rear screen, a 7fps continuous shooting speed that rises to 12fps with Silent Shooting Photography mode, and the brilliant Eye-AF system.
We'll ask whether DSLRs are still relevant, as well as finding out if the D780 can marry the two system's best features while retaining its identity - a tough task.

I own a D780 and I love it! I consider myself as an early adapter because I’m always looking for new things or new methods. Don’t stick to what you’ve done and expect to get better (if you do what you did, you get what you’ve done). And still: I love my D780! I have had a couple of mirrorless camera’s in my hands and I can’t get used to them: to small (though I have small hands), I mis the extra buttons, to light weight (and therefor an inbalance with a couple of my lenses), battery life, prone to a dusty sensor (the mirror blocks the sensor in that manner), etc. A friend of my switched to Sony A7 but regrets that and is considering switching back to Nikon DSLR. I could go on with this, but I won’t. To sum it up: I love the D780

This is a very good camera for both stills and video and is a smart move by Nikon, especially for the F mount users. I tried out the D780 at my local camera store and the deal breaker for me was the mechanical shutter noise, which is about average for DSLRs. I do indoor dance and theater with my Z6 through the EVF using the quieter shutter. I am going to pass on the D780 and continue to build my mirrorless system for my specialty. This D780 is still a great camera and will meet the needs of Nikon's hybrid shooter very well.

  • @ppmagazine

We have to agree with that, the mirror slap is a definite downside with DSLRs when you put them against the mirrorless cameras with quieter shutters and silent shooting. It does offer silent shooting through the Live View, though that will obviously negate the OVF. As you say, it's a limitation of all DSLRs.

I think for still photographers, the D780 is hard to sell. With the 2300$ price tag, there are no significant upgrades to photography. At the very least, they should have provided the 153 AF system to justify the price.

Of course for people with F glass it makes sense for direct mount shooting without adapters. The camera is jack of trade master of non but that’s what makes this camera so special. Sure today mirrorless has clear advantages…but for out door shooting dslr view is still the best. This camera has everything you need, it has better low light image quality than D850 and also even better dynamic range. The ergonomics feels amazing in the hands and body feels solid and reasonable weight. It’s too bad this camera didn’t come out 2 years sooner it would have gotten much more attention.

I would agree that mirrorless is the new dog, and it's clear that it's now at the point where it may be just outselling DSLRs, but I think the DSLR market is surprisingly healthy all things considered. I do think there are people who like to say otherwise for views, but there were about 20 million interchangeable lens cameras shipped in 2018. There was a drop of 24% to 2019, so let's say 15 million shipped last year (could very well be less). About 30% were likely DSLRs (very conservatively, and largely due to the fact that there were fewer DSLRs produced than mirrorless, it could likely be closer to 35-40%), which means there's still millions of people who will opt for DSLRs against mirrorless, even if mirrorless is the majority now. It will be interesting to see, and if any DSLR stands a good chance, this is as good as any.

@@EEEBA1 I've never been a battery grip user, but I can compare the battery life of 780 vs 750. As 780 has the ability to shoot in screen like a "mirrorless", you drain the battery faster. If you shoot by optical view finder you have a very long life battery. At the beginning I only shooted by OVF, but after some tests I'm getting used to shoot by screen and it is very practical. So I carry old batteries of my D750 and it may save my day in case I need it (rarely need them). About big lenses can't tell you.
