Bought a D780 for a trip to Iceland, mostly because I wasn't 100% sold on the mirrorless game at the time, and I couldn't be happier! I totally agree that it's the best of both worlds and does everything I've ever asked from a digital camera.

An important property of the Nikon DSLR system is the battery life. If you are seriously into doing stills then a DSLR (850) is still unrivalled. I appreciate that people now want to become video producers and so the need for mirrorless is there but there are many of us who like to “capture the moment” on a file other than producing Petabytes of video all needing storage and backup. I have an F mount D610 still going strong and a Z6 but find myself using the D610 a lot. With the D610 you can go out all day on one battery charge and still have energy left over.

Howdy Leigh and Raymond! It's always enjoyable to see your videos, and hear your comments on "things photographic"! As for me, I really have no interest in mirrorless cameras, and am exceedingly happy with the cameras and lenses I have from Nikon! Started with the D7000, added a D7100, D700, two D750's, and a D4s. I've got the Nikon trilogy lenses, and the Nikon 105mm f2.8 Micro, all bought brand new, and an assortment of Nikon DX lenses, too. So far, I've not found anything I can't do with the gear I already own. Heavier? Yes, but not that heavy! When we travel domestically, or overseas, I always take two camera bodies, the Trilogy lenses, and a 50mm f1.8 Nikon lens. It all fits nicely in a Mindshift Backlight 18L photo Daypack, and the entire thing weights just less then 18 lbs, which I can easily carry around all day long, everyday! I did, very briefly, consider a D780, but it didn't seem to offer enough more, to make me want to change from my beloved D750's. Regarding KEH, I love that company, and have bought a few camera bodies, from them over the years. Trustworthy, honest, and offering excellent deals on buying and selling used gear, what's not to love?! Keep up the good work, and God Bless! - Doc Mark

Hi Leigh. I just listened to a video by J Christina and he suggested learning to use what you have and asking will buying a new or used camera make you a better photographer. I’ve followed you for a long time now and have bought several cameras/lenses (Nikon F and Z) and have to realize, that I need to spend time and money learning to use what I have before buying more gear. I do enjoy your video content and I owe a lot of what I know today from watching your videos.

I have the d780's big brother, the d850, arguably the King of DSLRs. I shoot both fashion and travel with it. Sure, I don't have eye detect (unlike the mirrorless cameras) but in truth, I don't feel my output suffers from its absence. I love it.

I bought my 780 from Nikon as refurbished (shutter count 0) which I pair with my 850. I do product mostly but have a side doing analytic videos of youth level select league pitchers and batters, from 9U through 17U, with the 780 (youth baseball is BIG business all over the states). I can library lots of lenses for these applications for a lot less money that the Z line. The 135 f2 used at full body distance is great for the video work because you can separate the pitcher from distractions in the background. Not as well as a head and shoulder portrait, but still really indistinct.

I'm one of the lens junkies you described. I'm still using the F2 I bought new back in the seventies, a couple of F100s, an F6, and I have both of the Nikon DC lenses. I have a few Nikon DSLRs, including an old D50, and I'm absolutely crazy about the D780. Either of the DC lenses on the D780 in live view is an amazing combination for portraits. The Illuminati will not be taking away the SLRs and DSLRs. Trust me on this, I am on their technology committee and we like mirrors and film.

Another excellent video from you on a topic many aren't necessarily thinking about. The manufacturers are pushing us to mirrorless. I recently sold my Nikon DSLRs and right now, I am using a M4/3 camera that is good but not up to DSLR standards. I tried a Z5 but I was not too fond of it and the higher Z mount cameras are too expensive. Literally, I'm physically falling apart so right now I not shooting outside much. Thanks for a great video.

I have been thinking for a long time to get a high end camera like the D780. I started out with several film DSLRs from the 1980s. I sill have the Nikon FE and FE2 which are in need of refurbishing. Also I have 2 Nikon AIS Lenses and a Vivitar 70mm to 210mm. In the meantime I have gone Mirrorless using an Panasonic FZ 10002 Bridge camera -it has a 1" sensor. This is ok for most of my work as I am normally a casual photographer. But now and then I do photoshoots with other photography enthusiasts. My camera lacks low light capabilities. I am intending wait a few more months and buy a Z6 Mark iii (hopefully it would better autofocus inherited from the Z9) , if it is ever released by Nikon. If not the choice between Nikon D780 or changing brand to a Canon R6 Mark ii which is my dream camera.

Interesting discussion. I recently bought a D810 (from KEH!) precisely because of the wide and relatively affordable F mount lenses available for it. Yes, I have other mirrorless cameras which I use and enjoy but by-and-large, purchasing a fast, optically excellent full frame lens for a Sony is a huge expense. Not so with Nikon's legacy glass. As a bonus I found the Nikon button/layout/menu system very easy to learn and navigate. I learned a lot about the D780 from your video, but......... $1800 ? Not for me. I got my D810 for half that.

When the rubber bits of my D750 started to peel off, I considered getting a D780. Also because I run a Foolography Unleashed dongle with said D750 for geotagging. It works but it means I had to remove the accessory port door, and so the weather sealing is compromised. I can try to fix that up with gaffer tape (and I plan to), but Snapbridge would do it for me. Plus, the D780 does 1/8000 shutter speed. And it has some other improvements over the D750. Ultimately though, I think it's not enough to pay the GBP1400 or so for. If it was 36MP or so, I might be tempted. But as it is, I think I'll continue to use my D750, on which I replaced the rubber parts, for some time. The clunky live view AF doesn't really bother me. I am keeping an eye on the price of used Z6 and Z7 bodies though. And I think I will get into the Z system at some time.

Great re-review! I bought the D780 when it came out precisely for the reasons you noted. I have a full suite of F-mount lenses, and had zero interest in adapting them. The image quality of the D780 is fantastic, and the dynamic range is amazing. I've had several bouts of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), but a close inspection of the image quality between mirrorless and the D780 healed that ailment. =) The new cameras are amazing, and I'll probably go mirrorless at some point, but for now, the D780 is an amazing camera. Here here to you all for this information.

Great video - again! All though I just pulled the trigger on a Panasonic S5 offer (partly due to your coverage of the L-mount products) I have a sweet spot for Nikon and still have my old D200 on the shelf regretting that I sold my much beloved 105/2 DC with most of my other Nikon gear to buy a Olympus em5, when that came out, as I had just undergone a large back surgery and wanted to get some lighter gear to haul around. Would be great if Nikon had made a FTZ adapter with a screwdrive motor included. Would probably sway more people over to the Z-mount if we could use all of the legacy glass.

The Z50 is a great travel camera and easy to carry, so for me no more DSLR's. I realize that Nikon DSLR's are great cameras; D850, D780, etc., but enjoying with Nikon mirrorless camera, just their cameras had better AF.

For few years. I have beed using D750, with AIS, AI, and converted pre AI. 16mm - 105mm. The exposure works very well on manual lenses, especially with auto ISO. I love those lenses because it is so portable than modern lenses. My most favourite is AIS 18mm f3.5 after trip to angkor wat. The details of contrasts on the dark color mold walls, in love "a bit of bokeh" with those wide angle manual lenses. No regret, and keeping. No Z system, no going to upgrade to those bulky lenses.

I have a few F mount lenses that I use with my D700 (camera that I'll never sell... I love it way too much). I was using Fujifilm for work, but I quicly realized that I would be using two full lens systems side by side which don't really have cross compatibility. I bought the fringer NF-FX adapter in a hope to be able to use my AF-S lenses on my Fujis, but alas, the focus is pretty sluggish compared to Fujifilm native lenses, so I decided to take a hard decision and switch to Nikon. As a someone that needs an optical viewfinder in his life (but not all the time, I also so enjoy a good EVF), I considered the D780 right away. It would give me all the benefits of a modern camera with face/eye tracking but most imporrtantly good video capabilities. However, I quickly got into a bit of a problem : the camera not only lacks some features compared to the Z6, features that I consider to be really important for my photography and videography (features that are IBIS, back autofocus joystick, and since I'm a viewfinder guy, in a fast paced shooting scenatio like shooting an event, the real time "what you see is what you get", live exposure view of your image in the viewfinder is a nice perk, even if OVFs are more fun to use. I'm not really a big back screen user. That and the fact that a DSLR is pretty noisy compared to a mirroless camera even using mechanical shutter, one of the reasons why I generally don't bring any DSLR to an event shoot). On top of that, the cheapest D780 I could was 1300€, while the Z6 I ended up buying was 720€, both in great shape and the Z6 having a lower shutter count. Only thing I had to deal with was the single CF express card slot, but so far so good, the card doesn't feel like it's going to break at the mildest hit like SD cards do. The only lens that still uses AF-D tech that I have is a Tokina DX 12-24mm lens which I use a lot on my D300 and D700 (as an 18-24mm lens, since it covers a full frame sensor at 18mm). It's a lens that I am more than happy to manual focus considering the depth of field is so deep with it anyway. As much as I wanted to love the D780 and make it my main camera, there was too many things that would get in my way, while getting a Z6 + FTZ would be a walk in the park in comparison coming from an X-H1. And I can still get Z mount glass like the supe small and light 28mm f/2.8 which is brilliant and makes the Z6 almost a street camera. It's not like I intend on buying AF-D glass now, since Nikon has cut the support for it anyway. I'm totally fine getting AF-S glass (the 1.8G lenses like the 50 and the 85mm are brilliant lenses considering the money you're paying), and there is also heaps of third party glass that works like a charm on the FTZ, like my Sigma 100-400 contemporary. I'm eyeing a Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art, image quality is about on par with the very recent Plena at less than half the price, seems like a very good deal. If I could only have one camera, the D780 is 100% the camera that would have ended in my bag. As someone that it fine owning several cameras, I'm fine using Z6 + D700 when I get an OVF urge

I haven't verified this but I heard that Nikon has the patent on a hybrid EVF/OVF....when they introduced the D780 I thought they were going to follow up with a true hybrid model (call it a D790?). The way a hybrid EVF/OVF would work is with a small EVF screen that projects into the OVF when it is in "mirrorless mode". Nikon is so close - especially with the AF image sensor usually used in the Z models. But, with their intense focus on the Z system I don't think we'll see that anytime. It would be really cool and would set Nikon apart from the other biggies.

I'm still hoping that Nikon gives us one more DSLR, an upgraded hybrid D880 combining the pixel dense sensor of the D850, a grip attachment, and the mirror-less features of the Z9. It was a real hard decision between the D850 and D780 for me and I opted for the D780 for now.

I struggled with a D810 and eventually bought a battery grip for it, transformed its handling, so I get where you are coming from. BUT I bought a D780 about a year ago and honestly it doesn't need a grip, its lighter, more controllable in portrait stance, and the way the rear screen manipulates means you can hang the camera from your hand at arms length at most angles and remain steady....if it had a battery grip it would just add more weight. Believe me, I've had battery grips for everything F100, D200, D700, D810....but the D780 doesn't need one, its liberating! It might be nice to have the reasurance of a back up battery.....but at the expense of the handling and weight...nah!

I agree to many of the statements made in this video: I had replaced my good old D700 by a D780 and yes, it's a big leap forward using all the mentioned features in this DSLR. I own a lot of high end F-Mount lenses, so the D780 comes in very handy: I'm definitely not missing a battery grip as the battery lasts a long time and I carry a replacement battery anyway. But: the D780 has some weaknesses, when it comes to video recording, especially the autofocus lacks of performance and the body has no image stabilizer. As a consequence I bought a Z6II mirrorless body including a 24-70F4 Z mount lens and an FTZ Adapter. After some month of parallel use my resumee is a follows: I use the Z6 when I need less weight and size and if I'm taking videos. The Z6 clearly suffers from the EVF: e.g if you have LED lighting driven by AC you have flickering view finder images. The EVF is related to white balance, if you don't have it properly set, your views look like from alien planets. The EVF is much slower to follow moving targets and the Z6 is guzzling much more battery than the D780. So if I'm taking images for e.g. wildlife with the 70-200mm 2.8, I always prefer the D780 with it's realistic looking viewfinder images and the extremely fast autofocus for moving targets. For videos I prefer the Z6 II with better stabilization and faster video AF. For a short time I was thinking to sell the D780 but now I fully agree to the statements in the video: I'll keep the D780 despite it's size and weight, as it's an amazing camera. And as it was said, the image quality of both cameras is identical due to the same sensors. And of course a D850 would also be of interest, nevertheless 24 MP is sufficient for my way of photography.

I bought the D780 about 2 years ago and the Illuminati will have to pry it out of my dead hands when they come! It's a fantastic camera for Astro and Landscape. I have not used it much for birds and wildlife, though. For that I plan to upgrade my D7500 when said Illuminati bring us the Z8! When the heck with that thing be announced??!!

I have a Nikon D600. The live-view doesn’t work there. Very disappointing! I have gone to mirrorless, but I might get a D780 so that I can use my then costly D lenses…mirrorlessly. Is the D750 live-view easy to get to? I don’t care about fast focusing, but I value WYSIWYG exposure. Thanks!

IMO live view didn't work on any Nikon camera until the d850 / 780 era. I've found it so clunky on the D700 and later on the D810 that I very rarely used it. Only really tried it on a tripod. But the D780....completely different story. I don't like touch screens, but the one of the D780 is fabulous, and access to the live view functions is therefore just intuitive, so easy and fast. Switching focus modes, and shooting by touch screen with that amazing autofocus system......its just wonderful.....IMO the D780 is the first digital SLR I've had that makes sense of live view and dare I say even autofocus! In all the rest live view was just an add on, on the D780 its so well integrated that moving between manual and touch screen fucntions is just seamless. You won't miss the D600.....

Great camera that makes so much sense on paper, but the market doesn't respond in kind. Reminds me of the Canon T90 that attempted to bridge the FD mount with EOS technology back in the 80's. Another great camera, but not a hugely successful one.

Oh I know about the D780. I am however saving my pennies to get it being that I purchased a D850 (refurb/mint) six months ago and updated some F lenses. I went mirrorless 11 years ago from SLR/DSLR and have a nice stock of F lenses, even have a Z5... I'll probably keep the Z5 for when IBIS comes into play but I just love DSLRs, they are comfortable and more efficient to control, plus I figured I should get the last two top tier DSLRs ever made before they all disappear. Plus like you said the D780 is basically a bridge or hybrid DSLR/Mirrorless, who doesn't like that?!

hey.. thanks.. this was helpful.. I shoot on a D700 and it is frankly beat to hell.. so I'm looking.. the 780 looks like the one.. the local big camera store here in Ottawa Canada has the D780 in stock on sale at $2499.. and also a used body at $2469.. looks like for a short time.. buying new is an option.. unless you get a killer deal.. I used to work in a camera store.. I've seen this before.. for a time the new bodies are sold on sale pretty close to the going rate of the like new used. also.. I'm a total lens junkie.. I use a K5 for my APC and found I can shoehorn the older nikkor lenses directly on to the pentax body. (it's sketchy but it works) :P One does not simply have a nikon 85mm f1.8 and not use it on every body.. hehe

Yet look what they just put out a crop sensor monochrome. Leica had that technology back in 2006. I wish Pentax would concentrate on developing current technology. Also they have to clean up their alphabet soup naming of their lenses.

@@bngr_bngr I'm not sure when the original Leica M Monochrome first came out, but , so what? If I'm correct, this is the first non Leica monochrome camera and the only monochrome DSLR. Who cares if it's crop sensor? What technology would you like to see Pentax develop? They already produce the only DSLR cameras with IBIS and they are the only cameras on the market with adjustable anti-aliasing filters. Their weatherproofing and build quality are second to none. If by technology, you mean mirrorless, then I'm glad that there is still one company dedicated to the DSLR in the same way that I'm glad that Leica is still dedicated to the rangefinder. Mirrorless has some advantages over DSLR, but DSLR also has advantages over mirrorless. For example, as a practical matter, in contrasty lighting, the shadows in an electronic finder go to black and you just can't see certain details. The dynamic range of my eye is greater that the electronic viewfinder in any camera. Leica's M cameras cost $8000 to $9000 and their rangefinder viewfinders go back to at least the 1950's. The advantage of the rangefinder is that you not only can see the subject with your own eye, but you can see the subject with unlimited depth of field. No modern technology electronic viewfinder can offer that. With regard to lens naming, I have never not bought a lens because I thought the name of the lens was bad or confusing. Marketing departments would convince us that our DSLR's are out of date and that we need to spend money to see the image through an electronic screen instead of with our own eyes. But, both Pentax and Leica continue to produce and develop cameras that let us see the world with our own eyes. As a photographer, I think that's important. We already see so much of the world through screens.

@@LeighAndRaymond Obviously, it would depend on the project and your preferences . I have both the Pentax K-1 full frame and the Pentax K-3 iii APS-C. I love the shutter feel and lighter weight of the newer K-3 iii and I usually prefer it. As for lenses, any of the limited lenses are great and most of them are really compact. My favorite is the HD31/1.8, but I also like the HD43/1.9. I also recently got the 21/2.4 which is weather sealed. You may also want to check out the HD 20-40 (EFOV 30 to 60) which is really lightweight and weather proof. It’s a great one lens solution. I’ve also heard good things about the new DA* 16-50 PLM lens, but I’ve never tried it. It may interest you to know that I also have a Leica SL2 and an M10R with an assortment of lenses. I recognize the benefits of an electronic screen, but there’s no substitute for seeing the subject with your own eyes.

@ Typical Nikon compatibility: Through all it's history Nikon took care to give photographers with small wallets options, by allowing them to use old Nikon-, and third party lenses. And carried that policy through very challenging times for the company! Canon decided to block photographers from using third party lenses on their new R-mount. I love the colours of Canon glass, but I have to recognise that I am a customer Canon no longer wants to sell to. Canon's beautiful colours have taken on an ugly hue no filter seems to be able to correct...Perhaps I can find the Colours I like in Nikon lenses after all; they allow me to choose between so many...
