Check out my 18-200mm II review at cameralabs . com - in the results pages I compare this lens to the 55-200mm...
@MrHoithere Click the link below the video to go to my review at cameralabs - Ive explained it in more detail there...
Best review about this specific lens I've ever watched! Thank
This was one hell of a review. Well done sir! Very clear, very informative, very professional. Top grade! Thumbs up for that.
Gordon! The new red rectangle idea is brilliant. You can really see the difference between the focal lengths. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Gordon. I've been umming and ahhing about this lens and you've essentially pushed me over the edge now!
Nice to watch another review from you after quite a gap! Thanks! :D
Thank you for the review, I found it very helpful. You answered all the questions I had in your review. I have a 18-105 lens but will change it for the 18-200, thanks again.
Great! This was the top thing is was hoping you would review soon, so is was happy to see the video up.
@fxE20170 Thanks, you're very welcome! PS - be sure to check out the written review which goes with it at cameralabs . com for all my results. And if you're ever shopping online, please consider going through my partner stores page to support me! Thanks!
2021...... and I’m watching this having just bought a second hand D5500 with this lens as a compact do it all, to complement my D850 D500 and D610
Brilliant review! Great illustrations and insight - never knew about that zoom discrepancy at short distances.
Once again a great review. Gordon, thx for all the work ;)
Gordon, you've done it again mate. Outstanding work.
@ittekimasu Yes, I reviewed it at cameralabs . com - always check there for all my reviews!
@XxTheTechxX Yes, there are differences in quality - please see the results pages of my review at cameralabs . com
Great video and review Gordon, thanks.
@kaosvr426 Thanks. I wish I could do more, but they just don't pay the bills. Not enough viewers support me through the ads, so there will be very few more videos.
Brill, this is the sort of review i have been looking for.Cheers.
I first found out about the focal length difference when watching a video on youtube comparing the Nikon 70-200 with the Canon 70-200. I was still scratching my head after watching that video trying to grasp how that could be. Great job Gordon on explaining this concept to all of us with examples. I have the version I of this lens and it is a very versatile and fun lens.
@MrNullifier You're welcome! Don't forget you can support me by ordering through the partner stores page at cameralabs . com... PS - I had a great holiday in the Faroes a few years back!
Yes it's compatible with the D5200. If you like your 18-55 but wished it zoomed-in longer, then the 18-200 would be a good choice. But for portraits you might want something which can blur the background like a 50mm f1.8. Head over to the lenses section at cameralabs . com and check out my Nikon lens guide for more ideas!
Hohooo long time! Another great review!
Thank you for telling me about the lens creep and the lens lock option.

you're welcome!
@tomsaunders123 Because most viewers at YT weren't supporting me. This is my full time job and I have to pay the bills and sadly the videos weren't doing that. BUT there will be a new video on the D7000 in the next few days, although you'll need to visit cameralabs . com to see it.
the close subject focus info is great..thanks Gordon
@cameralabs Thanks. Your website is very detailed and a great source of information. I'll make sure to visit it more often.
@cameralabs Great stuff! Its a truly great shirt, still looks like new! Thanks for the really great reviews, your site is my first port of call for new camera gear. keep up the great work!
Thanks Gordon very helpful now have decided on AF-S 70-300 VR and Nikkor 24-70 2.8 after visiting CameraLabs site.
Thanks! I try my best!
Great review, thanks especially for the demonstration of focus breathing.
Great review. It's on my list of lenses to acquire.

Thanks for checking out this older review!
Very helpful post. Made me decide to buy this lens. Thanks Gordon.
Excellent and fair review. Great work!!
As always, great review!
Great review, much appreciated!
@cameralabs excellent review!
@quity919 The wide angle on this lens is the same as your 18-55mm. It just zooms much closer at the other end.
This lens has a built-in AF motor so it'll work fine with any Nikon DSLR. But either way, so does the D7000 for working with older lenses, so you're covered on both bases.
YOU ROCK GORDON!!!! Thanks for all of the reviews, they've helped me so much! I resorted to a Canon G11 and i love it! Keep doing what you do. ^_^
@catalin205 Yep, pretty sure I mentioned that in the focusing section of the review...
@mayhimsh er, didn't I review the 17-40mm and 24-105mm? I also have a review of the 8-15mm at cameralabs...
as usual, excellent review. thanks!
@kdum8 I agree, but it could loosen over time, so it's still good to have the lock for transportation.
Great review, very informative. Thank you very much!!
Thank you, Gordon. Very helpful.
@NAGULNR2 you can see on the results pages of my review at cameralabs . com
Why thankyou very much!
Great review. I just purchased a D90, Nikkor DX 18-200mm VRII and Nikkor 50mm Ai AF F1.4D. I was able to make the choice after looking at the great video reviews and the written comparisons and reviews posted on cameralabs . com I would have liked to buy from cameralabs, but it's much cheaper buying in japan so I ended up ordering it to japan :P Great reviews Gordon. Keep it up!
thankyou!
Gordon very nice review. I am planning to buy one super zoom lens. I am confused which one to buy 18-200mm vr 2 or 18-300mm . Can you suggest me? I want to use it with my Nikon D5300 during travel.

You just got another subscriber. Awesome awesome awesome review! This is what I've been searching for. Question: I wouldn't need a lens with a motor if I had the d7000 right? It has a motor for focusing in it, correct? Is there a price difference?
A nice review as always :) The focal length change effect when focusing can be seen easily on macro lenses. My SMC Pentax DA* 60-250mm 1:4 ED [IF] SDM also has this effect of course. Closest focus distance is 1m at all focal lengths. It has never been a problem though.
Hi, Gordon, excellent review ! How would you compare the 18-200 to the 18-105 for a crop sensor body like the D7100 ?
Thanks for the detailed review of this lens. As I understand, there's actually no reason to go for this second version. The predecessor shares most of its features. One quick question (more to Nikon than to you personally): What's the point of building in a switch that locks the lens at 18mm when there actually isn't any zoom creep at that position (unlocked lens)? As you demonstrate in this video, in order to provoke that zoom creep to happen you first have to turn the zoom ring away from 18mm. The zoom creep only starts at around 30-32mm it seems. By the way, zoom creep on any lens can be prevented by attaching a simple elastic band around the zoom ring. So, I'd rather buy the first version of this lens and an elastic band. And save the price difference.
@SDV0307 It could replace them and be more convenient, but obviuously you'd be lacking the 200-300 range, so it depends whether you're willing to trade that extra reac for the convenience of a single lens...
This is a very good review. Thanks Gordon. I am not sure what the point exactly of the zoom lock is. Since it only works at 18mm anyway and zoom creep isn't an issue at that range it would seem to be somewhat superfluous surely?
@FunkMeh91 I wouldn't worry too much about CA because the Nikon bodies do a good job at removing it. I just switched it off for those comparisons.
always the best introducing~!
@moviesunrated Yes, at cameralabs . com - I already have noise results there...
Hi Gordon I purchased sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Nikon lens, it's my first as I am a new at photography what do you think of this lens? is it any good at distance as I will be travelling and need to get clarity from panorama and tall cathedrals and castles waiting your reply, Nance Pirrello
@cameralabs
8 жыл бұрын
+Nancy Pirrello the longer the zoom range, the greater the convenience but the lower the quality - sadly you can't have everything. If you want one lens that does it all, then it's a good choice, but if you are driven by quality, you'll need to carry shorter ranges. I think it's a good starter though, but you tell me, are you happy with the results so far? That's what counts!
Hi, i have a question about the clicking sound on my 18-200mm vr II. every time my VR engages i would hear a clicking sound. unlike my other VR lens 18-105mm and 18-50mm they dont creat a clicking sound every time the VR engages. just wanted to know if theres something wrong with my 18-200mm vr II lens thanks
This is one of the best lens reviews I have seen (and I have seen quite a few :P). Made it really simple to understand. Btw, what are your thoughts on Nikon 18-300 that just came out? I'm planning to buy an overall lens and I'm confused between - 18-200 VR I, 18-200 VR II and 18-300. 18-300 just seems to heavy (and a little out of my budget). Also, if there's no difference between VR I and VR II of 18-200 except for the creep lock, should I just go for the cheaper one?
@lemonontoast Sure thing! The 2006 Paul Smith short-sleeved flowery shirt is an excellent choice for KZread presenters wanting a stylish edge over rivals!
very good review - I always enjoy your videos. :-)
@onlysirdave Sadly not. The lock is only at 18mm.
Thank you for the review. I use one with an old D300. The creeping zoom is bit of a pain. I know it has a lock, but only at wide, it would be handy to lock it at any focal length. Example, I may take a picture pointing down or up, the zoom will creep.

Am have in issue each time i zoom witn dis lenses to snap using automatical mode d pic don't use to sharp.. expect i use manual mode to snap .. Am using nikkon D7200 with 200 to 18 lenses
I just got the 18-200 about 3 months ago, there is no lens creep at all. The lens has a nice tight feel throughout the zoom range. Paul
Beautiful!
to the point review, as i like it. good job
nice I've been a forum member of c'labs for a while now, and I really like the reviews, but that red box you include in the review to show what you can capture with various focal lengths is really helpfull, It'd be great if you could do that with all of the reviews for people who, like me like taking good snaps, but can't visualise what 200 or 85mm or whatever looks like in practice. Cheers
After this lens is used for awhile, zoom creep gets worse. It is just a matter of being "broken in". I have found that even sitting at a 30deg angle on a tripod, the lens can also creep - so much so that the rubber band trick is necessary.
Nice review!!! :) This made me get one :)
Your friend is right, two lenses covering the same range will almost always out-perform a single lens with the same total range. But it boils down to convenience. Lots of people are happy to sacrifice ultimate image quality for the convenience of having only one lens and never removing it. It's a choice only you can make.
I don't understand the effect when you focus closer to a subject with the camera at 200mm and it appears to be zoomed out more than at infinity focus. Can you explainthis further? And thanks for another great review.
Just got my first dslr (D5200) with 18-200mm VR-II Nikorr lens... I was worried specifically about zoom creep and its one of the first test I did on the lens... Guess watt..?? I didn't observe creep at any focal length.. tested again and again.. lens just stayed in place.. :) Not sure if this will change over time.. but it could also be that these newest batch of lens might have been corrected for zoom creep, which is the only major complaint with 18-200mm lens..
Gordon...great interview and it's really appreciated that you decided to make it full length...By any chance, are you taking requests? If you are, would it be possible for you to review the Canon EF 75-300mm III Telephoto Zoom Lens...?
love the review, how well does it shoot in low light
very nice review, thank you
All your videos are very nice. will you be able to make a review on Nikon D7000?
@shadow0466666594 I hear what you're saying... I do hope to do more videos in the future, but I do need all your support!
Were those bay images soft? I'm interested in a landscape lens for things like trees and mountain peaks so what something pretty sharp.

Sir Which is best camera for still photography canon 80d or Nikon d7500 Thanks
I have just bought this lens. It is super sharp at all lengths. The 35 1.8 is the benchmark for DX lenses. This lens is there. Sorry did not realise this a ten year old post.

Glad you're watching it though!
On DX (d5100/d5200), does not distort 50mm? From what I know 50mm on FX format is to the human eye. And something else 24mm has less distortion than a 35mm on DX equivalent of 50mm on FX? sorry for any kind of mistakes
@imsameagle Thanks! I use an AKG C1000S.
is this nikon af-s 18-200mm is good enough to nikon d5100 model?
I own this lens and have paired it with a d7000 the image quality is excellent in bright light the zoom is amazing as it equates to a 38- 320 given the 1.6 crop factor, that being said it suffers in low light given it's f/3.5-5.6 focal ratio I find I have to compensate heavily with higher ISO and slower shutter speed that is when motion blur becomes significant. I am saving up for the 70-200. f/2.8 VR II THEN EVENTUALLY adding the 14-24. f/2.8 and the 24-70 f/2.8 but first I will have to sell s
love it gordon
I'm thinking about buying an 18-200 lens, but I can't decide on which one to choose: VR I or VR II. I understand the most notable difference is the lock switch. Money matters, so I'm thinking about getting a used one. Used VR I is available for around 375 USD, whereas VR II is for 580 USD where I live. Do you think it'll be worth the extra money to keep safe the lens by the lock switch? If I understand correctly, as the time goes, the zoom creep gets worse, so I guess the risk is much more with a used VR I than with a used VR II in this case.

Hey i know its been 4 years but what did you decide on in the end
Hey, i have a question although it really doesnt have much to do with the lens, what settings should the D90 be to record in HD, and how do you export in HD?? I've tried but it doesnt work for me
How would you say this compares with the sigma 18-200mm? I understand that the sigma has some vignetting but for just about half the price of the nikon, how do the optics stand?
Nice review! How did you find this lens to compare to the Nikkor 16-85mm?
Gordon as always great vid !!! i only wish that all models that are available in Europe would also be available in New Zealand ... ;( (Nikon P100 for example ...) so that you could review them and help us decide more easily .....
Have the 5100 with the Tamron 18-250, it surprised me beyond with its tack sharp at each end and stabilization worked perfect. Maybe got lucky but this is a fantastic lens.

as usual....grt Crisp review. But unfortunately NIKON didnt add much to this version II lense. i have 18-200 VR, which i purchased based on your earlier reviews. Any ways thanks Gordon for you wonderful reviews. Keep up the good job
If you zoom in at 135mm (for example) and then use the "lock feature"... Would it actually locked it for lens creep?? Is this lock feature just to prevent creep for 18 mm?? Thanks.
Hi, I'm trying to buy nikon d5200 with 18-200mm or 18-300mm lens but my friend told me not to buy those lens b'caz they give u a very low image quality so he suggested me to buy 18-55mm lens with 70-300mm another lens. I'm very confused now,I really do like to buy 18-300mm lens for my camera.........., please help.
Hi Gordon. I was looking at the Nikon D3300 for taking photos of art work for prints. The distance from camera to picture is about 3 meters. it comes with a stock lens 18-55 mm. do you think this is adequate or would you recommend a different lens. I'm so confused with all these lens.
