    Thanks! Yep, sure thing you can stop the creep by gripping the zoom ring - it really doesn't affect many people unless they have the camera on a tripod pointing directly up or down. It's a wonderful lens overall and there's several big fans of it at the Cameralabs forums if you fancy dropping by!

    Becuase the sensor in a Nikon DX body is smaller than 35mm film - so everything is effectively multiplied by 1.5 times - hecne 200mm is equiv to 300mm. See the lens guide at cameralabs . com for a full explanation.

    The D40, D40x and D60 can use any Nikkor lens, but they will only autofocus if they have AF-S in the name - there's actually quite a few AF-S models, but they're mostly newer zooms. For example, the DX 18-200mm VR is an AF-S model.

    Hi. First I'd like to congratulate you on the top quality reviews you do. I currently have a D80 with 18-70mm and 70-300mm lenses. I was thinking about upgrading to the d300 and keep the d80 and lenses as a back up. For the d300, I was thinking about getting the 18-200mm as a general all purpose lense, and then possibly get the 70-200mm F2.8, and an additional f2.8 wide angle lens. I was wondering what your thoughts are and what you recommend. Thanks.

    Thanks for the review. I just got mine for Christmas and it does not creep like the one in your review. The zoom ring is pretty tight. I guess Nikon heard enough complaints and tightened things up. I'm loving it so far. I got tired of switching from the 18-70 to the 70-300 all the time.

    Hello Gordon. Nice review as always. I saw a vid from QQQcon that there's a VRII version of the 18-200. It says it has a lock for lens creep. Performance wise are there any new improvements between the old VR vs VRII? If I can make a request can you do a review of the Tamron 18-270mm VC? I believe this lens is half the price of the NIkor 18-200 but performs well also? Tnx.

    I am really keen on a D5000 and 18-200 VRII combo. I note that this review is dated March 2007. Has the lens creep been fixed or improved at all? Also, where is the best place (as far as price goes) to purchase in Australia (I dont want to import from HK etc)? Thanks for your reviews Gordon, really helpful.

    Hi Kasumi02, I got an update for you: according to the Nikon manual, you'll get vignetting at 1m or less if the lens is set between 18 and 24mm. If it's set between 35 and 200mm, you'll get it at distances of less than 0.6m. So ultimately, yes it will block the built-in flash a bit depending on the situation.

    It depends why you want the 18-200mm as oppose to the 18-70 and 70-300mm. More convenient, but the twin lenses have a longer range and better overall quality. It's a good question for the Nikon section on the cameralabs forums if you'd like to post it there...

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs15 жыл бұрын

    Well the thing to remember is that a 10x range just means the longest focal length is 10 times the smallest. So the lens could be 5-50mm, 10-100mm, 20-200mm, 30-300mm etc. Lenses like the 18-200mm have an 11x range. All you do is divide the biggest focal length by the smallest to find out.

    i started watching your reviews 3 months ago and now im a owner of nikon d5000 with 18-55 VR and 70-300 lenses. Untill now i cant get enough of this kit provided but my aim is to shoot more of indoor model photography or photography of ramp models. What lens do you suggest would be the best for me??

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs17 жыл бұрын

    Hi Meetarnav, you would need to use a different lens becuase the 18-200mm is a DX format model, so is not designed to work on full frame. What you need to do is find a shot taken with either an 18mm on a full frame, or 12mm on a DX format body - note the factor is 1.5x on Nikon, Sony and Pentax. Have a look at our Sony 11-18mm review - at 11mm it's only a bit wider than a 12mm lens...

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs16 жыл бұрын

    I plan to test the 16-85mm in the future, but until then I can't say - sorry! I would suspect (but can't confirm yet) that the 16-85mm will be a little better optically - and of course can zoom a little wider. But the 18-200mm has the convenience factor of its longer range.

    Hi Kasumi02, I haven't tried this lens on a D40(x), so can't say for sure, but I think it might obstruct the flash and cause a small shadow in the bottom of the picture. A good trick to avoid the shadow though is to hold the camera upside-down! Then the shadow goes to the sky. Thanks to Thomas on the Cameralabs forums for this tip!

    Thanks for the reply. Have you any reviews on the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR lens. As i mentioned in my last comment / question, I want to get the 18-200 as the all purpose (light) lens that would go on the d300, and then also get a pro lens for higher quality. Is this a good idea or would you suggest just getting one or the other as they both zoom to 200mm. Even if you have not / will not test the 70-200mm F2.8, have you used it before and if so, what do you think. Cheers.

    There's third party 18-200s for the Canon fit, such as from Sigma and Tamron, but none have the class of the Nikkor 18-200mm. If you want the best 18-200mm, then go for the Nikokor and a Nikon body. But there are some other great lenses for the Canon system. This subject is discussed regularly in the Cameralabs forum if you fancy dropping by!

    I can't say until I've tested the new 18-200mm, but optically I think it's the same. You'd have to compare their specs. As for Tamron, I won't be reviewing any of their lenses because they refuse to send me any to test. Probably concerned about how they'll perform.

    It's true that no lenses are sealed in this respect, so dust sucked into the lens mechanics and eventually getting through to your sensor is going to be a risk with every lens. But this is minimal compared to the potential dust you could get when changing lenses.

    @Fakeblad If you're stil wondering, you can buy an adaptor to use Canon lenses on Nikon bodies, but not the other way around - due to the physical construction of Nikon bodies. With third-party manufacturers (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina) you have to buy lenses with the appropriate mount for your camera body.

    Hi cosmopointkk, I think that lens will work fine on your D40x. In order to autofocus on the D40x and D40, you need a Nikkor lens with AF-S. The 105mm is a great lens for closeup photography. Again, there's people on the Cameralabs forums who have this lens if you want to discuss it with them...
