I am so stoked i found you. I like the way you think. Last week i took my petal hood with me, and it was cluttering the small bag i was using, and i wanted to keep it aside. I have a very large sturdy safety pin called a blanket pin (you can get tgem at Joa-Ann's and other craft stores). I hooked the hood with it and pinned it to my bag. I could also have pinned it through my belt loop or on my clothes. Cuz, as you said, its a GREAT lens cover replacement, but lengtg can be an issue. Thanks for being the best photo guy on youtube!! ♡

The other thing is lens hoods make you look like a pro even if you're not. I've had plenty of people clear the way for me so I can get in the perfect position for a shot. I'm always gracious and thank them of course but perception is reality. Battery grips help too, makes the camera look bigger.

Another reason to use a lens hood is to help provide protection of rain hitting the lens for unwanted drops that can obscure the composition or the shot. This is helpful a lot during sports photography when you cannot wait till the rain goes away and must take the shot. Many lenses such as L-Series have a certain degree of weather proofing(Dust/Water) so its not typically an issue .

Excellent presentation. I know everything you said there - but you have a good manner of explaining things, so I didn't switch off. Well, I say "I know everything you said", but I never thought of putting the lens hoods on the strap. Wholeheartedly agree on the price of lens hoods as an extra. They should be included, no matter what price the lens is.

Canon if you're listening? If I spend $1,000 on a lens you should throw in a $5 piece of plastic that only cost $1.37 to make that you in turn still way over charge $30 for... is the full statement there.

10 years later and, this beginner, determined to learn all things photography, found this video simplistic and VERY useful! Thank You if you’re still out there.
Since everyone else is pointing out how old the video is when they watched it, I guess I will to. It’s now been 10 years since this video was made. Bottom line, it is time less like light. What a lens hood does is not going to change unless the sun stops shining. Thank you very much for making this video, it is hugely informative. I never knew or thought about the peddle shape of my hood on my wide angle lens before. Now I know. Again, thank you for the video and keeping it posted.
Great video - to the point, very informative and without all the excess noise and caffeine-injected host. You have a very soothing voice. :) Thanks!
This has to be one of the best, most well spoken and easy to understand review I've almost ever had.

I've been shooting for many years (began in "film". . .yes film days), and have watched many photography videos here on KZread. . .I must say your clear, concise explanation of this topic was refreshing. No hype or attempt to be super cool, just an excellent discussion of the subject. Very down to earth and very valuable information, especially for anyone just getting started. Wish your videos were around when I first began shooting. . .all those years ago!

I would watch this guy talk about anything for hours because of the calm voice.
One point that wasn't really mentioned about when you don't want to use your lens hood: when you're leaving a warm area (say your car) to a cold area (outdoors), your lens hood has a tendancy to store heat in front of your lens that's coming off your front element. For telephoto shots this can really affect your contrast and blur your shots. Letting your camera cool down to the surrounding environment before putting the hood on can really help.
9 years later this video still holds up better than most. thanks for the explanation
that lens cap storage was genius haha
Lens hoods also stop rain getting on the lens.

Buying a camera for my 11 year old daughter was a big enough challenge well, we chose the Canon 250D and since neither of us knew anything about cameras we had to go online for every bit of information, such as operating the camera with all the buttons and functions and about things like Lens Hoods....Anyway, we both have looked at some of your videos and put you on the top of our list for the best and clearest explanations of some of the many common sense questions in operating her new camera. You are the only person she has subscribed to and we look forward to viewing a lot more. Thank You...Amy and Rick
I liked the flexible rubber hood I had on my old Minolta. If you needed to shoot through a window, you could press it up against the glass to eliminate unwanted reflections.
